POKEMON RED AND BLUE WALKTHROUGH

Pallet Town

Upon selecting "New Game" from the menu, you'll get a brief introduction from Professor Oak about the concept of Pokemon, and then you'll get the chance to give a name to yourself, and your rival. Following that, you'll be transported to your room, and you're ready to begin your Pokemon adventure.

First of all, examine the PC at the top left, and withdraw a Potion. Then head down the stairs and out the door. Prof Oak isn't anywhere to be found in Pallet Town, so simply head north. Once you reach the grass, he'll come running up to stop you, and lead you back to his lab. After the dialogue, choose your starting Pokemon.

Bulbasaur

Bulbasaur, a Grass/Poison type. This Pokemon is good if you're a beginner player.
Charmander

Charmander, a Fire type. This Pokemon is good if you're an expert player.
Squirtle

Squirtle, a Water type. This Pokemon is good if you're an intermediate player.

Your rival will always pick the Pokemon that has an advantage over the Pokemon you picked. If you picked Bulbasaur, he'll pick Charmander. If you picked Charmander, he'll pick Squirtle. If you picked Squirtle, he'll pick Bulbasaur. In any case, try to leave, and he'll challenge you to a battle. If your HP gets low, use that Potion you got earlier. Whether you win, or lose, exit the lab and head north.

Oak's Errand

Head north from Pallet Town onto Route 1. Talk to some of the people there; one of them gives you a Potion. Avoid the grass if you don't want to face wild Pokemon. Eventually you'll reach Viridian City. Grab a Potion from the weird looking tree near the north of the town (That guy is blocking the way - you'll have to go round the west side). Heal at the Pokemon Center if you need to, and go into the Mart. The salesperson will give you a parcel to give to Oak, so return to Pallet Town the same way you came (You can jump over the ledges) and hand the parcel to Oak. He'll give you and your rival Pokedex in return. Before returning to Viridian City, check out your rival's house - his sister will give you a town map (it's really a world map).

Once you're back in Viridian City, you've got two options. First is to head west and battle your rival for some experience (He has a lv9 Pidgey and lv8 Starter), second is to catch some Pokemon at Viridian Forest. You'll want some PokeBalls from the Mart, though. Your rival will no longer appear for battle once you have earned the Boulder Badge, however.

On entering Viridian Forest, inspect the tree for a hidden Antidote. Then head west and north for a Pokeball. Return to the entrance and head east. Follow the path north and then west, picking up another Antidote along the way. Continue on, when you reach a T-junction, pick up the Potion to the right first, and then exit to the left and north.

Pewter City

There's nothing much to do in Pewter City - you can visit the museum for Y50, although there's not much point. The main attraction here is the Pokemon Gym, where you can earn a badge - after you earn eight badges, you're ready to take on the final bosses, the Elite Four. You'll want to train your Pokemon up to about lv10 at least before you take on Brock.

If you picked Bulbasaur or Squirtle as your starter, this should be a breeze. Simply use Vine Whip or Bubble, and the battle should be over quite quickly. If you picked Charmander, you'll want to have some reserves on the bench. Only Butterfree's Confusion will deal sufficient damage to them - any Flying, Normal, Bug or Electric moves will have minimal effect.

When you win, you'll receive the Boulder Badge, and TM34 - Bide. You'll now be able to use HM05 - Flash outside of battle. The guy blocking the east exit is now gone, and you're free to continue on to Mt Moon.
