There are quite a few trainers on Route 3, so be prepared - you can always return to Pewter City to heal. Just keep following the path and you'll reach the Mt Moon PokeCenter. You can buy a Magikarp from the conman, but its not recommended you do, unless you really want a Gyarados early on in the game (Magikarp evolves at lv20). Enter the cave entrance when you're ready.

You'll enter into what we'll call the main room. Upon entering, walk north a few steps and then head west. Pick up TM12 - Water Gun, and a Potion to the north of that. Return to the entrace and head east instead past the trainer. Follow the path and go down the first ladder you see. When you climb back up, head east for an HP Up. Return to the main room and head south.

Pick up the Potion in the bottom left corner, and then head east for a Rare Candy. Head all the way north, picking up an Escape Rope on the way, and then head all the way west, and south. Go down the ladder and pick up TM01 - Mega Punch from the ledge. Head past the Rocket and examine the lone rock for a hidden Ether. Return to the main room once again.

Once in the main room, head south and west into a large section of the main room. Pick up the Moon Stone at the top left corner, and head down the ladder and back up the opposite ladder. Head down the stairs to the right (There's nothing to the north), past the Rocket and up the other set of stairs. Follow the path round until you reach another set of stairs.

Examine the block circled red in the diagram for a vital hidden Moon Stone. Win against the Super Nerd, and you can take your pick between the two fossils; the Helix Fossil on the right becomes Omastar and the Dome Fossil on the left becomes Kabuto.

Head east and up the stairs. Make sure you grab TM04 - Whirlwind before jumping off the far right ledge, because you won't be able to return once you've reached Cerulean City. Anyway, rest up at the Pokemon Center and explore the town. The man in the far north-west house will tell you about the badges you've collected so far, and there's a hidden Rare Candy in his backyard.

In the house immediately to the left of the Pokemon Center, a man will trade a Jynx for your Poliwhirl (If you have one, that is). There's also a bike shop and a house being guarded by a police officer - you'll return to those places later. If you're lacking in the experience department, continue on with the walkthrough - otherwise, you can go straight ahead and challenge Misty, the Cerulean Gym Leader. You can also catch an Oddish/Bellsprout to make the gym battle much easier. Both events are important in progressing with the game.

You'll want to heal up at the Pokemon Center, because as soon as you try to exit through the north, your rival will show and and challenge you! He has a lv18 Pidgeotto, lv15 Abra, lv15 Rattata, lv17 Starter. Continue on the bridge when you beat him. You'll have to face six trainers to proceed (You can return to the Pokemon Center between battles if you need to), and when you've beaten them all, you'll receive a Nugget for your efforts.

Head north from the bridge and pick up TM45 - Thunder Wave from the ledge.

Do not fight the trainer facing north (Youngster with a lv17 Slowpoke). You must fight him later in order to catch Mew in the wild. For more information, see the Mew Guide

Head east and navigate through the trainers - you can get that item ball (It's TM19 - Seismic Toss) later when you have Cut, if you miss it this time round. You'll eventually reach Bill's Cottage - go inside and talk to the Pokemon there (It's really Bill, he's messed up his experiment). Agree to help him out, and when he's inside the machine, examine the PC to the left. He'll give you an SS Ticket for your efforts. Return to Cerulean City (You can take the expressway by heading over the mini-bridge and then heading left)

Cerulean Gym

Cerulean City Gym: Misty
Misty
Speciality: Water
Pokemon Level Type
Staryu Level 18 Water
Starmie Level 21 Water/Psychic
Any good electric or grass Pokemon will take out Staryu and Starmie - namely a Pikachu or Bulbasaur, Ivysaur, Oddish and Bellsprout. Don't use Charmander/Charmeleon or Geodude, they'll get damaged heavily. Try using Jigglypuff or Clefairy, if you have them, and use Sing to put them to sleep, then proceed to use any and all damaging attacks to take them out. Alternatively, try poisoning them with Butterfree's Poisonpowder, or Beedrill's Twineedle (which also happens to be super-effective against Starmie's Psychic half)

If you manage to defeat Misty, she'll give you the Cascade Badge, which makes all Pokemon Lv30 and below obey you, and allows the use of HM01 - Cut outside of battle, and you'll also receive TM11 - Bubblebeam.
