POKEMON RED AND BLUE WALKTHROUGH

Viridian Gym

From Cinnabar Island, fly back to Viridian Gym where the Gym Leader has finally returned and has unlocked the door for you. The gym has a series of propulsion pads like you saw at the Team Rocket Underground Base. Head up and around the wall immediately above the door to pick up the Revive. It's easier to get to the Gym Leader if you beat all the trainers (EXP comes in very handy), so do so and then heal at the Pokemon Center. Back inside the gym, head up past the L-shaped wall where you got the Revive. Walk up to the top of the room past the Cooltrainer, where a Blackbelt is, and head left to begin your battle for your final badge.

Pokemon Level Type
Rhyhorn Level 45 Ground/Rock
Dugtrio Level 42 Ground
Nidoqueen Level 44 Ground/Poison
Nidoking Level 45 Ground/Poison
Rhydon Level 50 Ground/Rock
These Ground types have low Special, so any Water or Ice Pokemon will take them out. Dugtrio, Rhydon and Rhyhorn can be taken out with Grass types; Nidoking and Nidoqueen by Psychic types.

You'll receive the eighth and final Pokemon League badge, the Earth Badge as your reward, which makes all Pokemon of any level obey. You'll also receive TM27 - Fissure, which causes a One Hit KO (It has very low accuracy, however). You can talk to him again, and he'll disband Team Rocket, and disappear into a life of solitude.

Pokemon League Front Gate

Gather up your best Pokemon and head west from Viridian City onto Route 22. You'll be met by your rival yet again:

Blastoise Level 53 Water
If you chose Squirtle:

Venusaur Level 53 Grass/Poison
A strong Ice/Water type will be able to take out Pidgeot, Rhyhorn, Exeggcute/Venusaur and Growlithe/Charizard easily; Electrics will deal with Blastoise and Gyarados; Alakazam requires a bit more strategy, try putting it to sleep or paralysing it. Toxic works well here too.

If you need to, return to the Pokemon Center and heal. Bring along some Escape Ropes, or someone with Dig/Fly in case you need it, and also someone with Surf and Strength. Head west to the end of Route 22 and into the large building.

Here you'll have to pass eight guards, each of them will check for a certain badge. When you get to the pool of water, use Surf. There's a hidden Max Ether on the island there. Disembark at the other end, and immediately head right. There's a hidden Ultra Ball in the tree by the pillar. Continue north and you'll reach the Victory Road Gate.

There are several switches around the cave. To trigger them, you'll need to use Strength to push the boulders over the switches, and the passage will open. If you make a mistake, go down a ladder and return to the same room - the boulders will have reset.

Here is the solution for the first puzzle. Once you have solved it, the circled block will disappear allowing you to go through.

Head up past the ledge and head right at the T junction. You can only collect one item at the moment, so grab it, and then head left from the junction, then off the ledge and down the ladder. Return to the item balls again, and you'll be able to get the other one. The items are TM43 - Sky Attack, and a Rare Candy. Go back down the ladder again.

Head south upon returning to this floor, and solve the puzzle (solution to the left). The circled block will disappear once again, and you can head down the ledge. The item ball resting against the bottom edge of the ledge is TM05 - Mega Kick. There's another switch here, but you'll be returning to it later. Head round the upper edge of the ledge where you can pick up a Full Heal. Head up and around the corner again to pick up TM17 - Submission, then head up the ladder.

The item ball to the right is a Max Revive. Head all the way left (don't use the ledge) and pick up TM47 - Explosion below, before using the ladder to the left. In the next room, examine the lone rock for an Ultra Ball, then head left and pick up the Guard Spec above. Save your game, then examine the Pokemon there and you'll be attacked by the legendary bird of Fire, Moltres.

Moltres

Moltres is a Fire/Flying type - with only above average defense and a 4x weakness to Rock attacks, Moltres is difficult to battle with. It does, however, have very good Special and good Attack. It lacks the ability to learn some solid moves of its own type, such as Flamethrower and Wing Attack, but with Gold, Silver and Crystal, that is easily fixed. Fire Spin and Toxic make a good combination in Red, Blue and Yellow; Reflect will help reduce damage slightly from Rock attacks.

It's at level 50, and knows Fire Spin and Peck. When you've caught it, return to the previous room.

From the ladder, head right and use Strength on the boulder there. Push it all the way to the left from where you've just come.

Head back to the right and up the ledge. Follow the path, and when you're off the ledge, head right until you see a boulder next to a hole. Push it down and follow. You'll recognise this place; push the boulder all the way left to that unused switch, and head up the ledge and to the right. Follow the path out to the Indigo Plateau.

Indigo Plateau

You're five battles away from the end of the game. Stock up on Full Restores, Revives and Full Heals. Heal your Pokemon at the Pokemon Center there. You'll have to face five tough trainers consecutively - there's no turning back once you've entered, and if you lose, you have to start from the beginning again. You'll want to have some strong Ice, Water, Psychic and Electric attackers. Feel free to return to any town and pick up any forgotten TMs, or what not. When you're ready, enter in through the door at the north.

Ice types have that annoying ability to cause FRZ, luckily it's quite rare. Any Electric type will sweep through - be careful about using Grass or Rock types however. Cloyster and Slowbro have very high defenses, so use Special Attacks on them. Lapras has high HP, so if you don't take it down in one hit, expect to take some considerable damage.

Bruno's Pokemon have high Attack stats, so bring in someone with good Defense. However, his Pokemon lack in the Special stat - a good Grass or Water type will KO Onix in one hit, and a Psychic Pokemon will take out the other three. Watch out for Machamp's Fissure.

Agatha is very fond of using status ailments to take down her opponents. Watch out for Poison, Confusion and Sleep especially, and also for Arbok's Glare. A strong Ground type will be able to take down Gengar, Haunter and Arbok, and if it knows a Rock move (TM48 - Rock Slide is useful here), it should be able to KO Golbat too. A Psychic type will also come in handy, especially with its resistance to Dream Eater. If your Pokemon fall asleep, use the PokeFlute (If you still have it). You'll be needing to use some Full Heals and Full Restores here.

Have an Electric Pokemon as your starter. Pick the right move, and Gyarados, with a 4x weakness to Electricity, will go down in one hit. Dragons are only weak to Ice, but resist Grass, Water, Fire and Electric attacks. Dragonite has a nasty 4x weakness to Ice, so make sure your Ice type is still alive to take it out. Aerodactyl can be taken down by a good Electric or Water type. A good Rock type would not only resist most of the Dragons' moves, but can also take advantage of Dragonite's and Aerodactyl's weakness to Rock.

The Final Battle

Your final battle! It seems your rival has beaten you to the Champion's Room, but that won't be for long. Make sure you save and heal before going into the room, because you won't have the chance to otherwise.

- Pidgeot will go down to any Ice, Rock or Electric move. Watch out for Mirror Move, especially if you have, say, a Water type using Thunderbolt on it.
- Alakazam will be tough. Once it Reflects, it takes halved damage from Physical attacks, covering its weakest stat. Try get in with Sleep, Confuse or Poison - if not, just pummel away with good physical moves as you've done in the past.
- Rhydon will go down in one hit to a strong Water or Grass type move. Ice and Fighting types will work here too. Be careful of Horn Drill.
- Gyarados, like before, will go down in one hit to a solid Electric move. Use an Electric type for Blastoise too - Grass types watch out for Blizzard.
- Exeggutor doesn't have any Grass moves at all, just watch out for Hypnosis putting you to sleep. A good Ice, Flying, or Fire type recommended here. As for Venusaur, it knows only Grass moves, so anything with a resistance or high Special should be able to take it down. Take advantage of its Poison half - bring in a Psychic.
- Arcanine can be taken down with a Rock or Ground type, Rock resisting Take Down and Ember attacks. Charizard has a 4x weakness to Rock attacks, one hit should take care of it. Water types work well here too.

And that's it! Once you've beaten your rival, Professor Oak will offer his congratulations and you'll be immortalised in the Hall of Fame. Well Done!

Now that you've beaten the Elite Four, the final dungeon of the game is now available to you, and you can continue playing by selecting "Continue" at the introduction menu.
