POKEMON YELLOW

Pokemon Yellow was the third game released in the USA, following on from the revolutionary Pokemon Red and Pokemon Blue. Nicknamed "the Pokemon Anime game", Pokemon Yellow bought to the Gameboy the fun of a Pokemon RPG with a storyline that resembled the popular cartoon show.

One of the most noticeable features of the game is the change in Pokemon pictures. The Pokedex was revamped with a new set of 151 Pokemon in different poses, and each had a new dex entry to compliment. Moreover, several very recognisable Pokemon sprites are now littered around Kanto instead of a generic icon - the first you'll find is Chansey in the Pokemon Center, and later on, Jigglypuff, Snorlax and many more. There have also been some changes in Pokemon movesets - Charizard can now learn Fly via HM02, Vaporeon can learn Aurora Beam and Pikachu, the star of the game, learns Double Team and Thunderbolt, to name a few.

By far the main feature of the game is your starter, Pikachu. Not only will it refuse to get into its Pokeball, it will tag behind you through the game. You can always talk to it and see how it's feeling - angry, sad, happy or sleepy - it'll all depend on how you treat your sidekick. And just like in the Anime, you won't be able to evolve it into Raichu using a Thunderstone.

As said before, the game copies many of the cartoon's elements. You'll notice Nurse Joy and Officer Jenny around the place, Gym Leaders will use Pokemon that they used in the Anime, and you might spot a few familiar trainers waiting for battle in the vast plains of Kanto - look out for AJ from "The Path to the Pokemon League", Joe and Giselle from "The School of Hardknocks" and even the infamous Team Rocket - Jesse and James, armed with their very own Meowth, Ekans and Koffing!
