Biggest Time Wasters
Guitar Hero, DDR, anime, IRC, IMs, coding for the site
Family
Just me, mom, dad, and the dog. No siblings.
Sleep Style
My day starts at 6:30am and usually ends around 10pm.
Language Skills
English, Latin, Java, PHP, and basic C++
Works of Literature
I enjoy the Harry Potter series (read 'em each once), the Imponderables series (question-answer format, very interesting), and I follow the story/antics of MegaTokyo as well. And, of course, the 5-part Hitchhiker's Trilogy is the best series ever. ;P
TV Shows
I'm a SciFi fan; Stargate SG-1 (especially before RDA left), Stargate Atlantis, Doctor Who, Heroes, Eureka, Lost; good stuff. I don't care for "reality TV" much.
Anime
I'm obsessed. The Kin of the Stars series was my first, and I love it. Besides that, I really liked Last Exile, Eureka Seven, Read or Die, Azumanga Daioh, FLCL, and of course The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.
Hidden Talents
I can play the piano fairly well, I'm teaching myself to play the guitar, and I can solve a Rubik's Cube in two to four minutes. I'm also an amateur magician, and know a few simple tricks, some of which can be quite profitable.
So, since it's a pretty big deal (at least to me), and since it's having a noticeable impact on my work here on the site, I suppose this is at least worth talking about in some detail.
First thing's first, I graduated with my BS in CompSci and Math back at the start of May. Now, at the start of July, I've started working full time. That whole "started" thing is the complicated part.
My family lives in the Twin Cities in Minnesota, and I went to school just outside Milwaukee Wisconsin. My new home is just outside Madison Wisconsin, so it's a little closer to "back home" than school was. Unfortunately, this has meant a lot of packing, traveling, and unpacking over the last two months. And this will continue for a while yet.
I am working as a Software Developer for Epic. They're a health care software company; they make the software that doctors' offices and hospitals use (and a bit more related software, too). You probably haven't heard of them, unless you know someone who works in the health care industry, and even then, it's still unlikely. Interestingly enough, I'm not the only member of the staff who works there. Epic now employs two of the people on our forums' staff list.
Work so far has been a lot of fun. I have my own office, shared with the other new developer on the team who started the same day I did. I haven't actually done any real work for the company yet, and it'll be a while before I really do. I've finished the first of two weeks of orientation, and after that I start my training; it should take me until about the end of the year to complete that.
So, for a while now, my job will essentially be getting paid to go to college again. Except it'll be a lot harder. Once I get through the first few parts of training, I should be getting some actual "work" to work on as well while continuing the training program, which I'm very excited for.
The campus itself (and it is a campus, not an office) is beautiful, featuring about a dozen buildings all decorated according to various themes. The food is to die for; I've been paying about $5/day for a lunch that would easily set me back $15 if not $20 at any restaurant downtown. I'm seriously considering just buying an extra to-go box and bringing it home for dinner.
Speaking of that, the main reason I can't work much on the site (aside from time constraints) is that I'm currently living out of a hotel. This means I'm also using my laptop, which is approximately one-tenth as powerful as my desktop computer (and about one-twentieth the size). I won't be able to move into my apartment for another 2 weeks yet, and my things won't be here until the end of the month. Once that happens and I get settled in, I should be able to get back to work around here a little more.
All in all, it's a very busy, very exciting time for me. By this time next month, I'll be settled into my own apartment and into a job where I get to make a very clear difference in the world, and which is guaranteed to challenge me more than just about anything I've ever done so far.
Until then, I'll do what I can to keep things running smoothly around here in the little bit of free time that I do have. One thing I can do right now is to provide miniature updates and/or feedback via our Facebook Page and our Twitter Account, so feel free to make use of those.
So for now, thanks for bearing with us during what's proving to be a very busy summer for myself and for the other admins.
Congrats on the new job! I've actually hears of Epic! My mom's a doctor and my brother is studying comp sci, so my mom was like, "If you get good enough you could help develope hospital software!" (she's big on all of us being involved in ultimately helping people) He was interested and did a little research and found out about Epic and told me and my mom about it. At least I think that it was Epic...
