Since most of you are more experienced than I am with Pokémon in general . . . I thought I'd toss this out for discussion;
There are a few items which seem to me to only have negative effects (or no effect) on a Pokémon. I'm wondering if y'all are aware of positive effects these might have, or even any good use for them (aside from selling them)?
Iron Ball - cuts speed & makes flying/levitating Pokémon susceptable to ground moves.
Lagging Tail - "tremendously heavy", slows down your Pokémon
Dragon Scale - no discernable effect?
Mushrooms (tiny or large) - again, no discernable effect?
Shards (various & sundry) - no discernable effect?
I'm wondering if a couple of these might be needed for me to give to some NPC to get something else (such as a TM, HM, or some "service")? I seem to recall in one previous version that the Heart Scales were needed for the move tutor and the shards could be traded to some guy on an island for certain other items. But the Iron Ball and Lagging Tail really have me stumped, why would one give these to a Pokémon when they seem to only have harmful effects?

Shards and Mushrooms can be traded to NPCs. Dragon Scale is a trade evolution item.
Iron Ball can be thrown at enemies using Fling for heavy damage. Lagging Tail can be used if you want to put a fast pokemon on a Trick Room team. Both items can be Tricked onto opponent pokemon also.

well, mushrooms don't do crap on ss, for sure. but in d/p/pt, you can give them to the move tutor. doesn't dragon scale also boost dragon-type moves?? i always just sell iron balls (had a crapload on diamond), and lagging tail is, as Sion9 stated, only for trick room teams.

In addition to the things those fine people have said, you can trade shards with a guy in multiple towns (including by the pokemon center in Violet City) to get assorted berries.

& also, I should clarify that Mushrooms are used for the Move Tutor in the Gen 3 games which are Ruby, Sapphire & Emerald & in DPPt & beyond, the move tutor asks for Heart Scales in exchange for services...so...ingame all those items have uses except for Mushrooms which you should just sell(though...) & the Iron Ball which maybe in the Battle Frontier has some stradegetic use but other then that, it's a no go...

Mushrooms -> trade for move tutor in FRLG only, other wise just sell them
Shards -> DP - Trade 10 of same color for wheather move TM, Pl - same as DP but can also trade to move tutor to learn special moves, HGSS - trade for berries in either Violet city or in Fushia city
Lagging tail -> makes your pokemon go last, it doesn't actually reduce speed so I don't know that it works in Trick room, how ever going last has some benefits for some pokemon
Iron Ball -> Strongest Item for Fling grounds levitators and flyers also reduces their speed
Dragon Scale -> An evolutionary Item for Seadra, when traded while holding dragon scale it becomes Kingdra, It doesn't power up dragon moves that would be Dragon FANG

I'd just like to say that the programmers don't just put in items that have no effect in the game. That would be pointless, flame-bringing, and just a waste of space on the game card. But it is true that some items don't work when you send them from genIII to genIV games, as exemplified above.

True PowerPeanut - however, even the otherwise useless nugget is a good source of income. But, as I had mentioned earlier, the items I was asking about only seemed to me to be mostly useless. To me, almost everything else you pick up or are given in the game give some kind of help to a pokemon who holds it (or can be used to evolve a pokemon). But a couple of the ones I'd mentioned (iron ball & lagging tail) appeared to me to be pretty useless.
Oddly enough, I used "fling" (as suggested) with the iron ball & it did do a fair amount of damage. Unfortunetly, I didn't get it back. LOL

When you use one-use only items on Wireless, Wi-Fi and Battle Frontier battles, they will return once the battle is finished. Don't be discouraged from using them for fear of them disappearing.

Ah - alas! I used mine in a battle with some wild critter or other. When the foe Pokémon fainted, I didn't get the iron ball back. (Though, saying I only had one iron ball and now have none, sounds a bit weird . . . )

I would imagine items like the Flame Orb, Iron Ball, and Lagging Tail were created with the moves Thief and Fling in mind.

I find that Flame Orb is great for guts movesets and Toxic orb for quick feet movesets,( works really well on Ursaring btw). Flame orb can also be Tricked onto Physical sweepers to completely shut them down

Actually, it depends
lagging tail and iron ball slow you down. it can make revenge moves more likely to succeed, give you better chances of payback getting double power, or getting gyro ball increased power
shards-traded for berries, or can be sold
mushroom-can be sold (actually, that's its only purpose)
Dragon scale- i think u give it so seadra and trade it to evolve it

Drgaon Scale is an evolutionary item that when you give it to Seadra and u trade it, it evolves into Kingdra. Also, Lagging Tail and Iron Ball provide strategy that can be used to ur advantage if you use Trick.

You can use Lagging Tail with Metal Burst, since this move isn't a decreased priority move.

The lagging tail can be extremely useful if used by the right person.
