Even though I swear I all ready replied to this topic (but apparently I didn't)
And since it says partner and not starter I'm going to go with A Meowth and go Team Rocket
But cyndiquil rules as a starter
PS Woun't it be cool if There was an event that gave out meowths that knew Chatter?

I'm having a hard time picking between Totodile and Cyndaquil. I love Totodile but at the same time I love Typlosion. I'll most likely Pick Totodile because it's just so cute to see Totodile following behind you and while I'm at college I'll transfer him or her to my Pokewalker!

You can get through most of the main game with Typhlosion alone (considering they bring back a way to teach pokemon Thunderpunch in Goldenrod). I've always picked it in most GSC games I've played through in the glory days.
Chikorita is cute, but I often neglect grass types when they're in my party, which is why I hardly pick them as my starters...
This time, I'm picking Totodile, mainly because I've already made a party planned for when I play the game. But also because Totodile is pretty cool in its self.
The Johto starters are my favourite overall, so I like them all pretty equally though.

Probably either Chikorita or Totodile. Never been to much of a fan of Cyndaquil, Chikorita is cute but grass types are terrible nowadays (with the exception of Roserade and Venusaur) Totodile is very cool when it becomes a Feraligatr as well so probably totodile i think.

I've never been much of a fan of Grass type Pokemon, my playing strategy is generally just to attack and hope for enough damage to win, and their movesets require actual thought and patience, plus Chikorita just isn't my cup of tea, so no Chikorita. In my old Gold and Silver games I'd always either pick Cyndaquil or Totodile, I'm pretty sure I've never started with Chikorita before. I'd usually pick Cyndaquil just because Typhlosion just looked wicked cool, but he had a horrible back sprite in my opinion so it ruined everything, but Totodile made the game easier to start since he learned moves like Rage and Water Gun quickly, and had an elemental advantage on the Pokemon with the highest defense (rock and steel).
So, since I'll be playing this game for all of the fond memories, I'll probably pick Totodile since I started with him the most in my games. ^^ Besides, Feraligatr is wicked cool. It's one of the two Pokemon that was made with a name that was too long so they had to drop a useless letter.

I'm currently beating platinum with a totodile I traded over from pearl, and cyndaquil is a weak pokemon with low sats, and doesn't look great. chikorita looks great, and I've rarely used it if ever, but I already have one on my pearl with great stats, so the verdict...
totodile will catch me an ariados, then I will go with ampharos, mamoswine, and scyther, and my rival receives the best starter, chikorita, thus challenging me... sorta
btw, scizor is lame... keep the high speed and attack stats

I'm going to choose Chikorita because it's my favourite Johto starter. I just like to use my favourites when I play.

I always subconsciously choose the Water starter. I don't even realize I'm doing it, but the only "other" typed partner I've had is Pikachu in Yellow where you don't get a choice. Plus Feraligatr's awesome; I've got a good one on Diamond and one on Colosseum.

I'm the same way. Granted I've only played the first two generations, (I chose Squirtle and Totodile in each) but I suspect if I played 3 and 4, I would've chosen the water again. In SoulSilver, I'm gonna choose Totodile again.

totadile, because once he's a feraligatr moves like EQ, ice fang, and wtr fall will destroy all opposition. (and maybe a stealth rock in the fourth slot)

This. Houndoom is the only reason I'm not choosing Cyndaquil, but I'd happily trade someone for one once HG and SS come out in the states.

I always started off with because I just love I start off with other starters too but i have always pick Cyndaquil. The move that i give him just work perfect and it makes him my best pokemon around. so yea, in HG/SS, I'll be starting off with Cyndaquil.

I going to go with cause I never really got to use her much in the G, S & C versions.
I am not using cause I always tend to use him over the other two. Hey, he's my favorite among them.
I am not using cause I hate physical water type pokemon & this gave me lots of problems in G, S & C versions when teaching say, Blizzard to Feraligatr(which I did alot & also, very bad idea that was).
Plus Meganium is a defensive type(which I perfer over offense).
