Regardless of whether you are getting a new Pokemon from finding one in the wild, getting it as a gift, or hatching it from an egg, there's a chance of it being shiny. You're lucky to get a shiny Smoochum from that egg, but it's nothing out of the ordinary =/

That special egg you get in crystal has a peculiarly high chance of being shiny. Plus it's always a baby pokemon.

I'd like to mention some things about this:
1.) Test show a 10% chance of shininess with this egg in crystal
2.) Shinies always have a DV thing of 10/10/10/10/10/10 DV spread (10 in every stat).
3.) Males pass down the IVs
What does this mean?
If you get a shiny tyrogue, and breed it with a female abra, you will get a shiny abra.
This is why you always get a golden magikarp if you breed the red gyarados.
So, the egg could lead to so much :O

The chance of getting a shiny pokemon no matter what the circumstances are is a 1/8192. Each pokemon has a value called a color value and if it's a certain number it'll be shiny. Even if it's an egg, wild, legendary, or a gift they all have the same chance of being shiny. Just to add to what snowball said of course.

of getting it.
