has anyone else tried this? i dont remember seeing a single post about it. it is certainly different from the emerald battle frontier.
i noticed that the opponents use fairly random strategies so that if your salamence is up against something which knows earthquake and ice beam, chances are it will select earthquake as its attack. this made it easier in a way (since you could get lucky sometimes) but also harder in some situations (since you couldnt necessarily predict ice beam and switch out to blissey say).
another thing i noticed, which quite annoyed me, was that by about the 50th battle it seemed that almost every trainer had at least 2 pokes that knew explosion. or OHKO moves. its lucky i made it as far as i did without getting haxed, but this is how i went out in the 120th battle:
i sent out salamence. they sent out registeel.
1. salamence used earthquake, about 80% damage; registeel used thunderbolt, about 30% damage, salamence is paralyzed.
2. registeel used explosion, both die. i send out blissey, they send out walrein.
3. walrein used sheer cold, blissey dies. i send out suicune.
4. walrein used sheer cold, it misses; suicune used calm mind.
5. walrein used sheer cold, suicune dies.
notice that walrein had quick claw and went first on the last two turns. AAARRGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!
but i did at least get the silver and gold shields for my wife's secret base (it was nice of her to let me play her sapphire game ).

I've noticed that too, and sometimes I think they're trying to predict your moves - the ai thinks you'll switch Salamence and so therefore uses EQ
I lost cause of Sheer Cold Walrein also, on #103, Walrein OHKOed my Snorlax and Gengar (2 in a row!), then killed Salamence with Blizzard

I'd hate to say it, but sometimes I feel the AI's have a greater chance of things, like critical hits, OHKO hits, and item effects.
Like, I was battling a Pelipper, and this is how it went down.
I send out Lanturn, they send out Pelipper.
Turn 1. I use Rain Dance (it was a thunder dancer) They use Protect, which failed
I use thunder turn two, they use protect (I wasn't surprised)
THEN, the next five turns WAS NOTHING BUT SUCCESSFUL PROTECTS (I was PISSED)
I finally faint the bloody thing, just to have the trainer send out a Flygon, which got a critical hitting Earthquake. Yeah, and Lanturn was the only Pokemon that could take out Flygon's in one hit.

Lol Cuddles, I always find a thread of you getting mad at the Battle Tower or BF...
You guys are lucky, I've never got past 56 battles(I wasn't thinking, changing my tem 50 or so battles in.)

Why do people go to the battle tower? I have never been there and what is the point of the shields?

hahaha yeah, i guess i do complain a lot. the first thread i felt compelled to reply to (and therfore when i became a member) was one about "unlikely battle scenarios" which was a thread where people whined about losing in situations that shouldnt have happened still, once i won a battle when my flygon was holding bright powder - the opponents lapras missed twice in a row with ice beam while i got it with fire blast in three hits! (it was in the battle palace - the one where the pokemon choose its own move.)
as to why you would go to the tower, its just to see how good your strategies are. anyone can beat the elite four with a level 100 team consisting of rayquaza, groudon, kyogre, etc. but its more of a challenge facing pokemon of the same level. the shields are really just for bragging rights. you put them in your secret base and enjoy looking at them! another reason you might try the battle tower is that you get some good items as prizes - eg leftovers, choice band, kings rock, that kind of stuff.

yeah, you just have to win at least 100, not win the 7 trainer group
