I dont really have a favorite author; I have favorite books. But I still really enjoy:
Sharon Creech (The Wanderer was amazing. I read it when I was ten and I still read it now)
Meg Cabot (Her 1-800-WHERE-R-YOU series OWNS Princess Diaries)
Norah McClintok (She writes thin mystery novels that I adore)
...probably a few more but it's early and I cant list things yet. I guess I would have added Eon Colfer or J.K. Rowling a few years ago, but I dont read them too often.

I don't read half as much as I should. Still, I do pick up a good book occasionally.
The All-Time Greats List:
Michael Crichton - The original author of Jurassic Park. Seriously, even if you hate the films (which I don't, incidently. Gotta dinosaurs!), the book is pure gold. The only other book of his that I've read is Prey, and it's one of the best reads ever.
Philip Reeve - He wrote a quadrilogy of novels about cities on giant mechanical wheels, set in a post-apocalyptic future. With airships. Well worth a look, IMO. Mortal Engines was the first in the series.
Terry Pratchet - Of Discworld acclaim. There is never a boring or unfunny moment in his books. Only You Can Save the Earth has the award of being one of the few novels I have ever re-read.
Malorie Blackman - I've only read her trilogy of Noughts and Crosses, Knife Edge and Checkmate. I nearly cried at the end of the books; I won't give anything away, but by the time you reach the final page of Checkmate, you WILL shed a tear. Basically, she writes about a fictional reversal of the Apartheid, i.e. white people are the second-class citizens, black people are the masters. Very deep stuff.
IMO, JK Rowling is losing her touch. Too much fanservice in the last few books.

All time Favourite Authors:
George R.R. Martin: This guy wrote probably my most favourite books ever. The Song of Fire and Ice series.
J.K. Rowling: Who doesn't love Harry Potter?
Erin Hunter: She wrote my second favourite books ever. Warriors series.
Stephen King: If you don't know this man then not even Chuck Norris himself can help you...

My top three:
J.K. Rowling - Great descriptive language.
Stephen King - Great plots.
Mark Twain - Humorous and sarcastic.
