Let's see if I can remember.
Back in the day, I think I picked Squirtle. and stupidly raised it alone to level 52 before Fuschia City. I was a n00b back then if you handn't noticed.

I believe the first time I played, it was Bulbasaur, which I named Bubly because I misspelled "Bulby." Then I started over and chose Squirtle and had a terrible time getting past Misty since I didn't have a Pikachu and my friend traded me his Ivysaur to use, but it wouldn't obey me. I eventually got all 150 Pokemon though. Then I started over and tried with Charmander. Since then, I've restarted the game so many times, I've lost track.

I used Bulbasaur on my first two times and Squirtle on the last one.
I really liked Squirtle more, since it learns a lot of cool moves. Plus, Squirtle learns cool moves by TM's, so I didn't have to wait long to evolve it, unlike Bulbasaur, that I evolved it on level 40 something so it could learn Solar Beam quickly.

and i'm hoping to get a (if i can find one) to help me with misty's and and then or will help me with lt. surges , and (at least i think he has them - it's been donkey's years since i played on the original red virsion

Hmm, SneakySneasel, beating Brock is extremely hard when you use Charmander. But it is possible. How I do it is I mostly raise Charmander but catch a few grass Pokemon. The trick is to evolve your Charmander into Charmeleon. With Charmeleon and a few potions, Brock shouldn't be too hard at all. Most likely, Charmander won't evolve before you hit the gym. It takes a little while, but go in the grass before Pewter and fight wild Pokemon until he evolves. Trust me, it'll make it a lot easier. For backup, make sure at least 1 or 2 of those grass Pokemon is on level 8-10.

Rather than start a whole new topic in the FireRed/LeafGreen section, I decided to post this here.
I just got FireRed. I picked a and named it Firetail.

Well, for my very first run through the game, I picked Charmander. He looked the least pathetic out of the starters in the Blue picture library. ^_^

It would be nice if there were some Grass types available, that early (that kid doesn't let you get to Mt. Moon, until you beat Brock).
I think the only wild pokes available are,
/{metapod}
/{kakuna}
(I think that's all of them), I would suggest raising a Caterpie into a Butterfree though.

I'll chose in LG too, 'cause of And actually, is the most powerful, but the Gym leaders make it more difficult for him.

My team that I beat Brock with was
Level 18 Charmeleon
Level 15 Butterfree
Level 15 Beedrill
Level 15 Mankey
Level 16 Pikachu

hmm...In red, I first had Bulbasaur, then picked Squirtle. In lg, i'll pick Charmander for a few reasons, and if I get fr, I'll pick Squirt;e, since I didn't get to use the Red Squirtle much, since this weird mental kid took it off me.

I usually pick Bulbasaur though In Fire Red I chose Charmander because he learns metal claw (Anti Rock Move).

My very first was Squirtle, raised to alone to blastoise by lavender town, I remember I was out of all pp exept withdraw, I ran into that guy with a Cubone by lavender town, and he took my blastoise out and I had to start the rock tunnel all over without flash because I didn't save after I got out
