Ninty made Mewtwo to be like those unlockable end-of-game dungeons and bosses in Final Fantasy I and II. It goes like this: beat the Elites. Not much else to do, is there? So, throw in a special boss, make him ball-crushingly hard and tell you to capture him. You will fail, unless you are a master trainer (or have a Master Ball ) and you can use him for bragging rights.
I personally like Mewtwo, but I think that maybe Mew should be in the same cave as Mewtwo (you know, they're distant cousins so why don't they hang around in the same place?).

Because they hate each other, Mewtwo is Evil and Mew is good. Basically they don't mix well together

I fail to see the similarities, and of course some dragons/dinosaurs are going to look like. Thats like comparing a human and a monkey. They have common ancestors, so they look a bit similar.

Yes, Mewtwo was made to be that uber pokemon. It was released in RBY, there was no other uber. Think bout it. All the birds are weak to rock in one way or another, as well as electric (apart from Zappy). Mew was unobtainable short of Ninteno Events and Gameshark. So, they made one, totally uber pokemon. The problem is, they made it TOO uber, so they made it slightly less uber in GSC: Dark types, Amnesia.
Also, they made it to annoy people. Think, how many people in those days actually read the text? They chuck the master ball at the next pokemon they want to catch. Then later, they find themselves in front of Mewtwo itself, with only Ultra Balls, and then they have to try and catch it for a week straight. This is my opinion on Mewtwo...

Mew Glitch, ever heardof it?
Lugia34 wrote: So, they made one, totally uber pokemon. The problem is, they made it TOO uber
So Rayquaza, Lugia and Ho-Oh are too Uber aswell because they have the same base stats. This is really annoying, people say that Mewtwo is too Uber but don't know what they are talking about because other pokemon have the same base stats (as stated above) and EVERY pokemon can be taken down by another
Lugia34 wrote: Also, they made it to annoy people. Think, how many people in those days actually read the text? They chuck the master ball at the next pokemon they want to catch
I didn't do that, I used it on Mewtwo
Lugia34 wrote: Then later, they find themselves in front of Mewtwo itself, with only Ultra Balls, and then they have to try and catch it for a week straight
And it doen't take a week to catch with an Ultra Ball, it doesn't even take an Hour

There are a few similarities (head and tail mainly) but you must admit he looks alot more lke Barney than Mewtwo does

And Kyogre can definately be more Uber than Mewtwo sometimes, so why moan at Ubers? They can all be taken down, by a skilled player.
Magic Umbreon wrote: MOO2 U SUK BADLY
Bad attitude, he is Uber, but his looks make him highly likable. I'm a big fan of Mewtwo and all other Ubers, though I don't use them (Except Lati@s because they are my faves kinda), but only because of their looks.
goldenquagsire wrote: You will fail, unless you are a master trainer
It's all up to chance, so it soesn't matter if you're a master trainer, any n00b could come along, throw a Pokeball and catch it. But of course without a Master Ball, you will need a strong team to withstand Mewtwo and survive long enough to finally capture and enslave the beast.
More on-topic.
I'm glad Mewtwo was invented, believe it or not he made pokemon imo (He made the game exciting and cooler... Kind of...), without him RBY would actually be pretty boring. (I think...)
I think he was made as a trophy, to show you've beaten the game. Though this so-called-trophy became abused, and became an Uber tool used in most teams.
Too bad nowadays he is still used as a tool by cheap players, and stuffed into teams with 6HP, 252 SA and SPD, and a moveset usually consisting of Flamethrower, ThunderBolt, Ice Beam, sometimes and a lot of the time Calm Mind, and of course, Psychic. (For those who perhaps didn't know)
A sample Umbreon can overpower Mewtwo, as can a Houndoom sometimes, as these will drain his STAB. (And Houndoom has Crunch).
Also, Slaking with CB and Shadow Ball should easily OHKO Mewtwo.
But anyway I'm happy that Mewtwo exists, he is an awesome creation by Nintendo.

Yep, but at that point not too many people knew about it.

Totally true, but remember this: Mewtwo was almost unstoppable because of AMNESIA. At that point, Amnesia raised both its special attack and special defence, because at that point, it was just Special. So, he'd Amnesia up, then sweep with Psychic and whichever other move it had that were special. Rayquaza, Lugia and Ho-oh were all created AFTER the Special stat was split, and Amnesia took up the Sp. Def stat, making Mewtwo much less effective. And also remember, this was before the Dark-type was invented, making Psychic attacks hit everything, with no fear of resistances. And its only true weakness was bug, which the only good bug move was Twinneedle, which only Beedrill can learn iirc. Ghost had no good attack, all it had was Lick iirc. And Night Shade.

You didn't, but a dang lot of people did.

That depends on if you get lucky or not. And that was overexaggeration, couldn't you tell?

No comment here, except that IMO Dragonite does look more like Barney than Mewtwo. Who compares genetically created white and purple killing machines to weird purple and green dinosaurs?
This isn't meant to offend you, Krisp, or anyone else that likes/loves Dragonite. But it is true.

I like Dragonite too, but I don't deny that Dragonite doesn't look like Barney. I don't think that's gonna cause people like me to dislike Dragonite less. On the contrary, the fact that Dragonite is so powerful, despite its deceptive cute looks, is what's so endearing about it. Yeah, you get the idea
Anyway, moving back on topic, I agree with the point about Amnesia making Mewtwo too 00ber, especially since there are too few Bug types back in RBY. The only effective Bug type against Mewtwo in my RBY experience was probably Parasect with Spore, but then again Leech Life attacks aren't gonna affect Mewtwo much. Fortunately, Nintendo gave the game more balance in subsequent generations, with Dark types thrown into the mix, and better anti-Mewtwo Pokemon.

I think Mewtwo was a cool thing to add into the game and also, go into cereaulean cave with pokemon that are too weak, and the wild pokemon will defeat you before you can get to mewtwo.

Yes, I totally agree with the reward part, but if Mew was in the cave and Mewtwo was from an event, then people would be saying "But I think Mewtwo should have been in Cerulean Cave and Mew should come from an event,"
It's a no-win situation....

Actually, Mewtwo is the only uber other than Articuno that I'll really use in battle (Articuno is better in my opinion, but that's a different topic). Normally, I don't use legendaries (** Napoleon Dynamite voice** Anyone can win with a whole team of legendaries, gosh!! ), however for some reason I think ol' M2 is cool. Plus, yeah, uber in RBY, but when traded to GSC he gets owned ALOT by PkMn of the same or higher level. (I think Dark type moves have something to do with that, though.) So, I think whether or not Mewtwo is worth anything depends on what version you're using him in.
There's my two cents (don't spend it all in one place).

Articuno is not an uuber. Its a legendary.
Uubers are Mewtwo, Rayquaza, etc. Pokemon like Articuno, Raikou, Regice, etc. are not uubers, they are legendaries.

Meh, it's all Greek to me. I think legendaries are ridiculously strong sometimes so I lump them in with ubers, and well, you get the idea. I think I got my point across, though.
Thanks for the heads up though, Krisp. I'll make sure I put stuff in the right category next time. (people will probably understand what in the heck I'm talking about better if I do, huh?).

Mewtwo's cool! I think they made him for the same reason snowball said.
The thing I don't like is when some kid catches all the legendaries (Spelling?) and uses them all in one team. They know they can't properly train a team themselves so...right. In My opinion Mewtwo didn't ruin the game at all! Offtopic:I got a lvl 80 Mewtwo but, I barely use him, I stick with my trustworthy Alakazam . Well mewtwo just kicks butt and takes names

I don't like Mewtwo much. Everytime some kid sees one they're like OMG a Mewtwo. It's annoying. If they are going to make an ultra powerful uber, why does it have to be ugly and mean like Mewtwo. Seriously, Mewtwo would Pwn Rayquaza badly, as it would everything else. I wish Metwo wasn't so powerful.

Ok, in red/blue I beleave there were two "battle roles":
*something to stop a mewtwo
*mewtwo
I've read an old RBY guide and they had a pokemon moveset to destroy a mewtwo. That was the following:
growth
leech life
spore
?
Desprite...
And if sometimes people were REALLY desprite:
pin missle
?
?
?
Sure, you get a prize at the end of the tunnel, but if those pokemon need those kind of moves to destroy it then they should have made a better way to destroy him.

How are either of them going to destroy a Mewtwo?
Neither of them resist Psychic Attacks and on Parasect, whys growth there? Leech Life is a Physical Attack, and a weak one at that

Dumb suggestion: Beedrill with Twinneedle. Might last a little while... if Mewtwo is asleep or at 1 HP. Thank goodness for GSC's Dark-type and Shadow Ball.

Why make such a perfect game and spoil it with an uber pokemon at a high level? The same about the birds too. What dy'all thin k? I really don't think that mewtwo was such a pain. It was the only pokemon I actually wanted to get in red, yellow, green, and blue. I think he isn't that great now though that I have him in every Kanto region version.

I like Mewtwo's appearance, but I never use him myself. I just keep him in the PC. I like that the goal in RBY was to catch him at the very end, but now it's just not a big deal. Still, Mewtwo's a good Pokemon.

Yeah. The whole Mewtwo goal is probably alot like the defeat Red mission at the end of GSC. Something to keep your attention after you've whomped the Elite Four.
(Off Topic: Can you imagine what would happen if you gave Mewtwo some catnip? Sorry, I had that random thought earlier today and had to get it off my chest.... )

I'm glad that at least in the FR/LG versions, there's more to get after the Elites than just Mewtwo. Nothing personal, but after catching him so much it gets tiring. And I don't know why he's unknown, I mean it's obvious after seeing any movie he's a MALE.

He's listed as unknown so that we can't breed him with a Ditto and either get another Mewtwo or as some might theorize, a Mew.
