{bidoof}

By the way, I'm guessing the Bidoof from last time broke the fall for you? Which Pokemon broke your chain this time?

It broke at 41 again, at exactly the same way.

Keep trying. I think I got lucky that my Lickitung chain didn't break for my first try at it. Make sure you can see all four patches of wiggling grass before moving to the patch behind you.

Working on {slakoth} still. The chain broke three or four times last night. If it breaks again today, I dunno when I'll get the swarm back lol.

Present from gamefaqs about shiny hunting (kudos to the author of the pokeradar guide)

Code:
 ////////////////////////////
<5>

Ok, here's the most important part of this FAQ. The actual formula for whether
a Pokemon found using the Pokeradar is shiny or not. Ok, so is everyone ready?
Here's the formula, over three lines for ease of reading:

                  14747 - 40(n)       Where P = Probability
     P(shiny) = ------------------      and n = Chain length
                2621440 x (41 - n)

So what does this show us? Well firstly, it shows that the probability of
finding a shiny Pokemon with the Pokeradar DOES increase as the length of the
chain increases, and it also shows us that the optimum chain length is 40. Any
higher, and there will be no difference to the outcome of the equation, even
though it is impossible to divide by zero.

Ah! Interesting. It's nice to know that there is definitive proof for the increased rate of shinies while chaining. I've seen so many people on other sites say that the rate doesn't increase at all (pfft). Anyway, thanks for that.

Update on the {slakoth} chain: Three shinies found

Ok the first dude was right (sorry I didnt check your name).

I, when i didnt need a life, tried to get an unimagiably low r8 item on a game.
It had a better chance than a shiny poke but i killed over 2000 of the monsters that dropped the item, no luck.

Its mostly luck involved and even if you encounter well over the 1/8128 or whatever it is because the system dosnt know you saw 10000 guys... it dosnt make a difference.

Good luck shiny hunters cuz i am going to join you someday

I don't think you understood what we were talking about. The formula above is proof that the chances of finding a shiny while chaining increase as the chain grows. You are talking about the standard random encounter rate.

More random trivia! To get a 50% chance of finding a shiny you need to do 5629 battles! (Or ~1125 with pokéradar chain)

Happy hunting! 1125 is still a lot of battles!

So, 2250 battles to have 100% chance? Well, time to go get a chain of 2250 Bidoof.

No, didn't you read the text under the formula from the guide?

Quote:

The domain of n in that formula is {n: 0 < n < 42}. Substituting n = 41 into the formula would give an undefined value, as you cannot divide a number by zero to get a valid answer. Substituting n > 42 into the formula would give a negative answer, which does not make sense in probability. Even if you kill 2250 Bidoof, it would be the same as killing just 40 of them, because the probability will NOT increase any further as it would give an invalid value.

Wow... that many shinies in one chain? Did you reset until a shiny popped up, or did you just keep growing the chain? I would get to a chain of 40 and then have to reset for like an hour until any shiny patch showed up... :?

putting n=40 in that formula gives P(shiny) = about 0.005. thats 1/200 which is pretty damn good!!

does this mean you get to a chain of 40 and then, instead of extending the chain, you simply look at the shaking grass, then walk 50 steps if no shiny patch until you can use the pokeradar again? or is it simply better to keep doing the chain? if this other method would work, then it would seem better since you dont have to worry about breaking the chain any more.

im gonna have to give this trick a try for myself one of these days. you guys are amazing for the amount of success youve been getting!! lol :lol:

Once I got to a chain length of 40, I'd just keep walking 50 steps and reset the radar until a shiny patch showed up. However, it has taken me between 30 to 60 minutes until the shiny patch showed up. The worst for me was Lickitung, which took about 90 minutes. I've only been able to get one shiny from each chain. The chains break soon after the shiny showed up.

If you'll think back to the formula that was posted above, your chances for finding a shiny don't improve past 40 links in the chain. Because of this, it stands to reason that you very well could just reset the radar until you get a shiny patch, walk into it, catch, and repeat the process until you want to stop. That's what I did for my Vulpix chain, and I caught seven shinies.

Two shiny Nosepass, one at 41 and another at 48. There was actually another shiny Nosepass that appeared at 43, but I slipped and instructed my Lv45 Gallade to use Psycho Cut instead of False Swipe... :?

The Nosepass chain broke at 75 by a Ponyta. As per normal, the chain-breaking Lv14 Ponyta was paralysed with Thunder Wave, then it was fainted by my Gallade's Psycho Cut with a boost from three Sword Dances. *evil laugh*

I've evolved one of the shiny Nosepass, just so I can see both forms of the family in shiny form.

Congrats, Wai! :3

I've got a chain of 44 {ralts} going right now. I've caught four shinies so far, but I'm shooting for a few more.

Edit: Two more shinies, but my thumb slipped because of how tired I am. Ran into a bad patch because ot it. Oh well - six is a good haul.

Yep that's exacly what i do...
just go reseting until you find the shinies...
Trust me... it works better than just growing the chain...
but its kinda cool to have a 100 or 95 chain...

I catch the chain breakers. Then I name them things like "MagChain(downarrow)". Then I send them out against Cynthia's Garchomp.

Ace, check back in the earlier posts of this thread. There is a link somewhere that will lead you to a guide on how to chain properly.

Sending out chain-breakers to take hits for your own team Pokemon sounds fun. Let's say your opponent has just used bide and you've done some major damage on them. Just before your opponent releases its energy, send out the chain-breaker and let it take the hit for you. I'm sure most of us won't hesitate to sacrifice something like a Bidoof. *evil laugh*

k, i'm trying to figure out what happened to me about an hour ago.

Anyhow I was chaining some Beautifly to steal some Shed Shells with my Butterfree, I went to a normal rustling spot that was most likely a Beautifly, and when I entered into the battle, it was a Shiny!

Here's the thing, it was a normal russling spot, no different colors, aren't they supposed to sparkle white when a shiny is there?

Also, I keep trying to chain Eevees with the Radar, but every time a pokemon ruins it, I'm doing the four step rule and matching the exact type of russling and I still get Staravias and Kricketunes that wreck my chain, what am I doing wrong? (And yes i've read the guides, no real help for it)
