In a meeting where The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) had the chance to vote, 50 cent was announced songwriter of the year! (I was SHOCKED to learn it wasn't a typo).

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/5007390.stm

Yes, all from a guy who gave us these truly brilliant lyrics!

Oh my, seriously, if this is the best that the music industry can do, then I hold grave fears for our future. :o

EDITYBEDITY: Oh come on people, we're not meant to be discussing loose change's vocal abilities, etc etc. We're discussing SONGWRITING, not whether rap is good or not.

Which is why I say "screw the future" and almost-exclusively listen to Music from the 1980s.

...

**** You, Cobain.

50 Cent!?!?!?!?! Serious!? Omg... Thats just stupid. Gawd. His lyrics are about as good as my vision... Bad.

But really... I cant see why they picked him, he's awful, he doesn't sing, he talks with a rhythm and picks up his voice a bit. Its sad.

Quote:
A long long time ago
I can still remember how that music used to make me smile
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make those people dance
And maybe they'd be happy for a while.

But February made me shiver
With every paper I'd deliver
Bad news on the doorstep
I couldn't take one more step

I can't remember if I cried
When I read about his widowed bride
But something touched me deep inside
The day the music died

So
{Refrain}
Bye-bye, Miss American Pie
Drove my chevy to the levee
But the levee was dry
And them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin' this'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die

Did you write the Book of Love
And do you have faith in God above
If the Bible tells you so
Do you believe in rock 'n roll
Can music save your mortal soul
And can you teach me how to dance real slow

Well, I know that you're in love with him
'Cause I saw you dancin' in the gym
You both kicked off your shoes
Man, I dig those rhythm and blues

I was a lonely teenage broncin' buck
With a pink carnation and a pickup truck
But I knew I was out of luck
The day the music died

I started singin'
{Refrain}

Now for ten years we've been on our own
And moss grows fat on a rollin' stone
But that's not how it used to be
When the jester sang for the King and Queen
In a coat he borrowed from James Dean
And a voice that came from you and me

Oh, and while the King was looking down
The jester stole his thorny crown
The courtroom was adjourned
No verdict was returned
And while Lennon [Lenin?] read a book of Marx
The quartet practiced in the park
And we sang dirges in the dark
The day the music died

We were singing
{Refrain}

Helter Skelter in a summer swelter
The Byrds flew off with a fallout shelter
Eight miles high and falling fast
It landed foul out on the grass
The players tried for a forward pass
With the jester on the sidelines in a cast

Now the half-time air was sweet perfume
While the Sergeants played a marching tune
We all got up to dance
Oh, but we never got the chance
'Cause the players tried to take the field
The marching band refused to yield
Do you recall what was revealed
The day the music died

We started singing
{Refrain}

Oh, and there we were all in one place
A generation Lost in Space
With no time left to start again
So come on, Jack be nimble, Jack be quick
Jack Flash sat on a candlestick
'Cause fire is the Devil's only friend

Oh, and as I watched him on the stage
My hands were clenched in fists of rage
No angel born in hell
Could break that Satan's spell
And as the flames climbed high into the night
To light the sacrifical rite
I saw Satan laughing with delight
The day the music died

He was singing
{Refrain}

I met a girl who sang the blues
And I asked her for some happy news
But she just smiled and turned away
I went down to the sacred store
Where I'd heard the music years before
But the man there said the music woudn't play

And in the streets the children screamed
The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed
But not a word was spoken
The church bells all were broken
And the three men I admire most
The Father, Son and the Holy Ghost
They caught the last train for the coast
The day the music died

And they were singing
{Refrain}

They were singing bye-bye, Miss American Pie
Drove my chevy to the levee
But the levee was dry
Them good old boys were drinking whiskey and rye
Singin' this'll be the day that I die

.. that about sums it up. Music has officially died.

I've never posted here, but I've seen the article, and I'm shocked. 50 Cent is an ignorant, bigoted, homophobic ****. He cannot sing, he is supporting gun crime, and his entire genre that he belongs to is morally reprehensible. Oh, and a rap is not a song. It's a poorly-made stab at sounding intelligent. I'm sorry if that sounds offensive, but rap is just not a true form of music. I also agree with Calculon on this matter. The 80s was kinda' OK. These days, it's worse than the Iraq War.

Gangsta rap, yes. But the entirety of the rap genre? No. It's immature to dismiss an entire genre just because some of it sucks horribly.

A friend of mine once said, "You can't spell 'crap' without 'rap'.". Excuse my language, but I just have no tolerence for that stuff. I mean, it's like rambling to rythm. Preaching to percussion. Talking in time. (Okay, I'm out of cheesy puns. I'll stop now.). While I don't have anything against people who listen to it, it just gives me an instant migraine. Give me good ol' rock any day!

To whoever quoted 'American Pie', that's one of my favorite songs, thank you.

imo, rap isn't all that good, but I do like a few songs... (namely Mockingbird). All of the 00beremos at my school listen to 50 cent... ugh.

I don't have anything against emos. I'm emo. My two best friends are emo (and one's gothic). It's just that particular group of emos that I don't like.

Emos are not depressed. They are attention whores.

I'm tired of rap being regarded as a "beautiful, expressive" genre, when all it is is sex, women, drugs, violence, and more sex.

Does anyone know of any other songwriter who was nominated/discussed?

At least not all hope is lost; Annie Lennox also won.

Let's compare lyrics, shall we?

50 Cent - Candy Shop
Quote:
I'll take you to the candy shop
I'll let you lick the lollipop
Go 'head, girl and don't you stop
Keep going till you hit the spot, WOAH!!!!!

Annie Lennox - Pavement Cracks
Quote:
And the love don't show up in the pavement cracks
All my water colors fade to black
I'm going nowhere and I'm ten steps back
All my dreams are falling flat.

I like how you use the worst of the genre to represent the entire genre as horrible. There ARE legitimate rappers out there that aren't thugs obsessed with money and women.

Yes, I do know that. I'm just frustrated that the thugs obsessed with money and women seem to be the most popular.

Well yeah, people seem to like crappy music. How else would Nickelback, Fall Out Boy, Panic At The Disco, and other horrid bands like that be popular if people weren't attracted to bands that sane people don't like?
