As the topic name says, do you really know what Poke'mon are based on? Post in this thread what a specific Poke'mon is REALLY based on. (IDK if there's a thread like this) And oh yeah don't post here and say, "OH I ALREADY KNOW THAT!" or "EVERYONE KNOWS THAT!" cuz if you already knew that, good for you! (sarcasm). If you say everyone knows that, ooh!!!! Do you know my Grandma? (sarcasm) ~ Ho-oh Based on: H?-? ( http://www.onmarkproductions.com/html/h ... enix.shtml) Name: H?-? is prounounced as Ho-oh ~ Espeon: Based on: the Two-Tails Cat, Nekomata (Yes. It's based on a Japanese Myth. My first inclination upon seeing this thread was to make a "your mom" joke involving a snorlax.

^ WRONG! IT IS NOT WHAT IS FULLY BASED ON!Now. This is the purpose of this thread. To show where certain Poke'mon you thought were based on. Now for what Magikarp is really based on: Based on: a Chinese legend in which a carp would leap over a Dragon Gate and become a dragon, as a metaphor for becoming stronger by overcoming hardships. Name: Magic (Magik) + Carp The Carp that leaped: The Dragon it turned into: ~ Salamence: Based on: The EUROPEAN dragon. (Sorry. But don't be confused with the European dragon and the Chinese dragon. Saying dragon is general, therefore inaccurate.) PS The Chinese Dragon looks like the one above at Magikarp's.

About the Magikarp, I knew that but blanked. Thanks for the correction. And about the Salamence, I wasn't positive on exactly which type it was. I just knew that it wasn't a Chinese dragon, a Wyvern, or a sea serpent (some people consider sea serpents to be a type of dragon). To un-spam: Starter Time! (will do a seperate post for pictures) Charmander: Salamander+char, meaning to burn. based on a salamander Charmeleon: char+Chameleon based on a lizard Charizard: Char+Lizard Based on a dragon Torchic: torch, meaning to fry, burn, etc.+chick <-based on Combusken: Combust meaning to explode due to heat, I think+Chicken/Hen <-based on Blaziken: Blaze+Chicken/Hen <-based on Cindaquill: Cinder, meaning a small piece of leftover flame, like a spark, I think=quill, like that on a porcupine, like it's based on Quillava: Quill and lava. based on a porcupine I know more, to lazy to do it now. Also, I think I did this one right. XD

Vulpix: Based on: foxes. However, in Japan there are certain legends concerning foxes, or kitsune, as they are known there. One such legend which relates to Vulpix the most is how many-tailed foxes can breathe fire, create illusions, and have extremely long lifespans. After living a long time, these creatures take on spirit forms, which may be the reason why this Pok

Technically, it is a sea serpent and by extension dragon. *sign* I consider Gyarados a Dragon only now that I know what Magikarp is based on & nothing more, I just don't see the dragon in Gyarados(aside from it learning Dragon Type attacks which don't really cut it with me), it's an opinion, I do see Gyarados as a either badly done leviathan appearance wise or a giant sea snake of some sort though I will say that much... So it is based on a character in the same story Magikarp is based on a character from & by that extension is a dragon...

Gyarados's original typing was supposed to be Water Dragon, but they scrapped the idea and made it a Water Flying. No to mention its entire design is based off the Chinese concept of the dragon.
Back on topic. Drowzee and Hypno are both based on the Baku from Japanese myth, which is the Dream Eating Tapir. Which explains why it originally had Dream Eater in R/B/Y exclusively.
