I've looked to all the standard movesets and asked around and it seems that Espeon isn't a good pokemon. Can someone explain why this is? With a base Sp. Atk of 130 (And a maximum of 394) this could be a really great Special Sweeper, but all the movesets I've seen for this pokemon are 3/5 stars at most. Is this because Espeon is bad, or is it because the moveset is bad, or does it just pale in comparison to Umbreon by that much?
Edit: This is in General discussion because it pertains to FRLG, GSC, PD, and possibly RSE.

I don't really use a team. I just mix and match the Pokemon I have trained.

Because it has a teeny movepool.
But mainly just because it's a horrible pokemon. It's ugly and just sucks in general. :O

Can you elaborate please? The only reason I'm even having this argument is because I think it looks good. If Umbreon looked better I'd use Umbreon without hesitation.

The other day you said to you use the pokemon that you like. Besides Espeon is way better than any pelliper. I myself happen to think Espeon is a great pokemon the second best eeveelution. The reason some people think it's a bad pokemon is just that they haven't use it because there using other psychics such as alakazam and(for the people that use ubers) Mewtwo.

I did say it. If you're a person that thinks epseons don't fail, go ahead, I don't care. I'm just saying why I don't (and yes, I do realize it wasn't a very logical reason; I made a funny! :O ).
I don't know about fourth generation, but in the third generation, it doesn't have very many good moves it can learn. It has enough Sp Atk to support itself, but not that many moves. Calm Mind, Psychic, and...what was it again?

Indeed, not everyone thinks is bad. And its my favorite pokemon regarding looks, so is totally not ugly .
And yes, the movepool pretty much sucked in the advanced generation; so, unless you got HP fire you had to stick with calm mind batton passing. However, in DP, energy ball and shadow ball have been added to its movepool; and it will certainly be one of the most used special sweepers and a force to be feared.

Hmm Espeon sucks dont make me laugh moveset you say who needs more moves when Espeon has moves like Psychic Psywave Psybeam and can learn a handful of TM's Its Sp.Atk base is 130 which is off the charts it has good speed okay it doesnt have good defense but besides which Psychic pokemon does okay sp.def and below average ATK but Espeon doesnt need to answer your question no does not suck

@Elemental trainer: LOL CAPS LOCK!
@Silver: Maybe if you bothered to add punctuation to your post to make it readable, your argument might carry a little more weight.
Anyways, as has already been said, Espeon is typically looked poorly upon because the only decent attack moves it gets are Psychic, Hidden Power, and Shadow Ball (in D/P at least). Sure it's cute and all, and it has nice stats, but it's lack of versatility in attack capability usually leads people to other Psychic types, such as Alakazam, Grumpig, or Gardevoir.

Silver. Why would you need psywave, psychic AND psybeam???. Some puntuaction would be nice too.

Coming from the guy who likes Togetic and Mime Jr.
Espeon seems to have popularity as a Pokemon despite it's relative failingness at battling, as do the other Eeveelutions. I'd say that it's one of the best Pokemon in terms of looks, and it gets a decent repotoire in DP. While I won't comment on how much it'll be used in the 4th Gen, my guess is that it'll be a bit of a surprise for an experienced RSE battler to face.

I beg to differ. Golduck has a much larger moveset and a better Ability. Admittedly, Espeon could win in a fight against Golduck using HP Grass, but iirc, HP Fire is more common on Espy.

Espeon is a strong pokemon, even though it doesn't get a good movepool.
Evee evolution status [greates to weakes]

I wish Umbreon had higher attack and lower defense. I don't need a defensive pokemon; I'm gettin' a Dusknoir.

The reason he has high defense is because he is the Toxi-trapper of the fammily, witch makes him stronger than dusknoir. Yes, Toxi-trappers are incredibly strong.

Actually, Umbreon may be considered the most useful because it's a Toxi-trapper.

I know, I know. But jolteon rox! His incredible speed and special attack let him get rid of the enemy super fast. This is my opinion on jolteon:
I LOVE JOLTEON!!!!

I understand that, but I think Umbreon would be in Second or Third because of it's toxi-trapping abilities.

personally, I'd preffer Umbreon (obviously) not only is it a GREAT toxi-trapper, but its also got a good defense...and Espeon is very useful...you just need to give it the right attacks...combined, Espeon and Umbreon make a great team...but thats also coming from an eevee breeder...
