Well it sure as hell isn't genderless. And we won't know what it really is until the writers decide to tell us. Mew is considered genderless, but it's just wrong to say it's a guy.

I think Pikachu is a guy because he never really does anything feminine(except the perfume episode) but some guys do things like that

He.is.male.
^ Kind of end of.
Proof: For some stupid reason, all of Ash's things are male, which i find particularly stupid because he must have some Fs, but the reason he doesn't is basically because he is a male/main character.
I can't explain it, it's hard to explain, but I'm sure quite a few of you will understand.
And I hate the random people who call mew Female.
If mew was female, then mewtwo would be female....DUH, he's a clone.
And the mew in the movie is male, mewtwo is=mew is.

Yah, get what you mean... Meh, it's just confusing...

Mew is nice and playful, is mewtwo? No... They have their differences. Just because their clones doesn't make them exactly alike. If they were exact, why do they look different ? All of the other cloned pokemon were exact.

There's a 99.99% chance that his Chikorita/Bayleef is female. This is because Chikorita was described on having a crush on Ash and was extremely jealous of the attention Ash always gave Pikachu. And, let's face it, Pokemon is a children's show and therefore there's no way Chikorita would be a gay male Pokemon. Besides, it's voice is more feminine than Casey's Meganium's voice while it was a Chikorita and Bayleef respectively.
I think it can be basically assumed that Pikachu is male because of the way he and Ash behave together. They act like two male best friends. Though I suppose Pikachu was supposed to be genderless during the beginning of the series, it always came off more male than female, and once Pokemon got genders during Johto, well, it's obvious. It can also be assumed that Butterfree, Charizard, Bulbasaur and Treecko are all male, since they have female counterparts (pink Butterfree, Charla, May's Bulbasaur, the overly feminine Treecko in the "Wailord of a Time" episode, etc.)
Personally, I have always seen Mew as a female. It's pink, it has a feminine personality, it has a feminine-sounding voice, and it's seen as the mother of Mewtwo in a way. Before Nintendo had decided to go in the route that says Mewtwo was a scientifically engineered clone of Mew, I think they intended that Mew "gave birth" to Mewtwo as can be read in the journal entries in Cinnabar Mansion in RBY. The reality is that both Mewtwo and Mew are genderless, but just because Mewtwo seems very "masculine" doesn't necessarily mean Mew isn't "feminine." Ya know?

I always thought that was because they didn't have genders (except nidorans) until generation 2, right?
Anyways, I always though pikachu was male. I assumed the high voice was due to him being "Small" still, aka non evolved.

What we need is a web site with the scripts for every episode/movie of pokemon and search them for pikachu being called a he or a she.
I'm sure such a site exists.

I think Pikachu is male. I agree, he and Ash are like male best friends. And so what if he sometimes does girly things? Don't we all?
And regarding Mew (not that thats what the topic was about)- the way I see it, Mew and Mewtwo are a yin and yang- Mew is the feminine half, Mewtwo is masculine.
Mew is probably male or possibly both/neither (Mew could be ANYTHING!) but Mew is still the equivalent of the feminine half of the pair. After all, Mew and Mewtwo are kinda two sides of the same soul.

After reading all of this posts in this thread, many of you assume that Ash's Pikachu is Male. But Ash's Pikachu being Male isn't 99% a true fact. On the other side, Mew and Mewtwo are both Genderless, becuase in the ingame Pokedex, all legendaries are genderless, except Latios being 100% Male, and Latias being 100% Female.
