As you may have noticed, the christmas season begins in August. They've already started Christmas sales, putting up decorations, inviting people to carol concerts and yesterday our church had it's first christmas party. We are definately well into the season of christmas.
Is the fact half the year goes to celebrating christmas good or bad though?
Also, does anyone have an idea of what they want for christmas yet?

When I was growing up, we started decorating and doing Ixmas music and whatnot immediately after Thanksgiving. Of course, the stores held to that convention, too. :/ That's how I'm keeping it for my kids now: Black Friday is the start of the run-up to the solstice, and not a moment earlier.
All I want for Ixmas is cash for bills. The kids are luckily just a little too young to be writing lists. The extended family's gonna spoil them rotten anyway.

Christmas is boring anyway. It used to be the whole family getting together to give each other gifts and chill out, etc. Now its just people FedExing stuff to each other and having to watch Miracle on 34th Street. Theres nothing special about it

For christmas I plan on getting Super Smash Bros. Brawl (I know so late to get it ). Every year my family gets together and we eat leftover turkey from TG. Then we all sit near the christmas tree and talk while the younger kids open presents. It's so nice

I don't like the idea of holidays rushed. Just ruins the spirit of it. I can't wach a hoiday commercial if it's a month away. So far I see only grocery stores caring about Thanksgivng cause of their sales. And since I'm Jewish there seems to be a lack of holidays towards us >_>.

I already know what I'm getting for Christmas: a new laptop. If you knew the state of the machine I use now, you would understand how anxious I am.

I haven't seen anything about Christmas on TV or at the store as of yet, but obviously thanksgiving.
My family usually starts getting ready for Christmas late - the middle of the month at the latest.
I don't really want much this year - I have quite a few things I love already, and half of the stuff I would want, I'd never find a time to use it. I guess I'd just like a few bucks, maybe some more casual clothes, and a video game or two I've been wanting to get for a while.
When I start working at the ice cream shop next year (they hire at 14), I'll be using all my money buying stuff for everyone else. Believe it or not, I'm a gift giver.

I'm not enjoying it yet. It's too far away, but there's already lights up in town. =(
I want a new phone. :)

I'd say something about the 24-hour marathon about The Christmas Story, but I admit I watch it every year at least once. :x
When you work in retail, you will no longer feel into the Christmas spirit. Instead, you will feel overworked and stressed out (especially if you work for the biggest retailer in the world). Black Friday was great last year; I worked in a restaurant and we didn't get ANY customers! 8) but this year, it's going to suck. Especially since I work nights, I'll see all the retarded parents coming in at midnight to buy their brats laptops and PlayStation3's. Oh, and then there's the constant Christmas music playing on the radio. It's been playing since halloween night. It's a bit ridiculous.
So yeah, Christmas sucks. All I want is my family, but instead I'll get my moms retarded boyfriend's family. What a bunch of animals. I hope I work that day...

Oh yeah, and "Its Christmas, Charlie Brown" and all the sucky animated stuff they throw up >.>
I went to the mall and saw Santa was already there. Absolutely no one was going up to him though, I had half a mind to go up and try to get to sit in his lap for kicks :#

He wasn't the real santa; the real santa is the one at the thomas station in kiderminster! [/childhoodinsight]
In Britain we don't have thanksgiving, so stores aren't selling stuff for it. It goes straight from Halloween to Christmas. And you get christmas stuff before halloween too.

I normally just shut my eyes, stick my fingers in my ears and sing "LALALALALALA IT'S NOT CHRISTMAS GUYS" right up until Christmas Eve, when I rush out to the shops, buy my family any random thing that I can find and throw up some decorations on the walls.
Celebrating holidays over a month early is stupid. Completely devalues the point of them. :/

Blargh. Christmas lights, trees and commercials should all be made illegal until after november 31. it's so annoying....

I know, it's like they think Christmas is a product and they have to advertise it or something. The worst thing is "Christmas is just around the corner!" when it's months away.

To be fair, guys:
1.) Ixmas is just around the corner for those of us living paycheck to paycheck with two kids and no time to shop on our tiny budgets. If I don't pick up presents in spring and summer, wrap and label them, and put them all in an easily-remembered yet well-hidden location, then I don't have time or money to do Ixmas shopping even if I start in October.
2.) Spending a full month on Ixmas as a kid made it a truly epic holiday, especially since it allowed family to visit when they had time throughout the month rather than picking and choosing who would see whom on Ixmas day. If done right, it's not an overdose, it's a saga.

1) yes. I understand that. but the commercialism can wait can't it? we don't need christmas specials starting in the summer....
2) yup. but once you get older and cynical, you realize how overdone it all is. And it's not "the month" anymore, it's two months. Two months of solid christmas nonsense.

Older and cynical? Half the people here are in diapers, and the other half are angsting about their middle-school prom. There are, what, seven adults on Psypoke?
Holiday commercialization is a byproduct of a failing economic model. I'm sure we'll stop seeing Ixmas lights on the supers over Halloween candy when the rest of the Western banking industry collapses. Just be patient.

The Greek letter chi, which is used as an abbreviation for Christ (hence X-mas, which is why it's lolzy for people to go on about "keeping Christ in Christmas"). The fish symbol is also derived from chi's use in ????C.
Also, it represents my contempt for modern Ixtians who abbreviate Christ by leaving out the inconvenient parts of his life and words.

Despite it being my birthday, Christmas has never been that special to me. I mean, up until I was six it was the best day ever. But after that it was just good. Family comes round in the morning, we eat, watch Christmas specials on the tv, open presents etc. And like Toasty, since I've started working I've sort of lost my Christmas spirit. I got a part time job at the local GAME store. My god I have wanted to backhand so many parents. I mean, I can't blame them for not knowing much about games. It's just the parents buying 18 rated games for their 14 year old, because it's on the list. So ignorant that they can't see the big 18 stamped on the front. And then I'm working the 19th, 21st, 24th and 27th at the club where I work nights which is about 7pm to 3am each time behind a bar with no air conditioning while 100+ people dance, get drunk and listen to horrible music. Once you start working, Christmas is stress.

Well, I'm a kid, so of course I'm looking this with greed. My views are Christmas = Free Presents, and that's what the media has portrayed it as, not about what I was truely celebrating. Hell, I don't even believe in Catholicism (oooh, I'm gonna get a lot of hate PMs >>), and yet I celebrate the day, which has become Free Present Day. I don't have Christmas spirit at all, I have present spirit, and I'm sure this is running rampant throughout the rest of my school.
And 2x4b, yeah, many parents now don't even care much about their children, they care more that they don't starve them and get sued. The modernized parts of the world have become about the individual, but maybe a little too much in my opinion, that people have no second thoughts about something that could not serve a good purpose to another person. As far as I can see, the media is saying every moment of life is all about fun, happiness, and ignoring the concequences (or just leaving them til later), and while I am for the first two, the third is something that shouldn't be on the list.
Anyway, I'm going to enjoy my Xbox 360
