In every school across the planet, fads and trends often latch onto the students like a bulldog on the nieghbor's cat. Trends personally drive me insane due to my utter disgust toward the lack of individuality that comes with them, but meh, 'tis life I guess.
Anyway, what are some trends that have caught on in your school, church, maximum security prison, or wherever else you might spend most of your day?
My school is very..."trendy". The majority of my fellow students apparently have no mind of their own what so ever, and if I were to yell "FREE THINKER" they'd all probably run away crying or have a seizure right there on the cafeteria floor ("DOES NOT COMPUTE!!!).
Take today for instance. I was sitting in my lunch room laughing to myself. Lately there has been a plague of these white Polo looking shirts with huge brightly colored horizontal stripes across them. All the jocks, preppies, and followers have them. I think they're tacky. Gimme good old black or my Inuyasha shirt any day!!! I actually counted 34 different people in that lunch room today who had one of those ridiculous striped shirts on! 34! That's just sad.
Also, there are four doors entering the school on the main enterance. Well, everyone seems to be obsessed with using the leftmost door, and will actually stand in line to go through it. Today I walked past the morons and opened another door, adding "Way to be followers, people." for them to hurt their tiny brains thinking on. Most of them had striped shirts....

Your story's pretty funny Miasma, but our school forces us to wear uniforms so that doesn't happen and cause fights. If somebody is caught not wearing the right yellow shirt or the right green jacket on assembly, they're sent to the principle.

Lol there's no polo shirts here yet.
But in year 7, and 8, a friend of mine called Elliot was kinda gangstaish, wearing all the usual townie/chav horrific stuff, until he became friends with Sam and Chris, the emos of the year. They quickly turned him emo. Elliot was a ladies boy they say, so all the girls thought emo stuff was cool just so the emo boys would like them.
It's been going on for about a year now, really annoying, seeing girls walk around on non-school uniform days wearing drainpipes (tight, emo trousers) then chav jewellery. Emo's say its disrespectful and taking the mick.
Im one of the very few individual people at my school now, everybody is jumping on bandwagons with the big girly emo's that make me sick as they're so vain and bad looking.
Emoness is kinda taking over. But meh.
Wow I yap on.

I remember a few extremely stupid fads that have been born over the years. Like these "Yucky-Yo-Ball" things or whatever they were called. Come on, they're chain-mace looking things made using a slimy substance. I really don't understand why everyone was wasting money on them, but they were banned when a boy swung it around. It wrapped around his neck and starngled him to the death. That's what happens when you become one with a fad  .
Also, I remember when Yu-Gi-Oh was a fad. A pretty basic and expected one, really. But at that moment the whole school was full of n00bs who didn't even know what a Standby Phase meant O.O Meh, it died over about six months or so. (I still play because I didn't play it because of the fad)
There are a few going around right now... Well, the last time I was at school (six months ago). I remember a few things such as these things named "scubidos" or whatever... And LOL football stickers.
Man... People are idiots these days.
::EDIT:: Ah, yes. The rediculous scubidos or whatever they're called.

You can thank Kanye West for the "Preppy boy" look, even though that was over a year ago, but ever since he became Big over night everyone started walking around with bright colored or pastel color polo's, shirts or sweaters. I just wondered why it took so long to reach your area.
One Trend/fad that i've been noticing lately is kinda annoying to see. Mohawks, and it pretty much started appearing after a show on MTV "Meet the barkers" with Travis Barker from Blink 182. After that show Mohawks started to appear to the Non mohawk wearing crowd and shortly after became acceptable. There not usaly the old punk 7 foot high, with the shaved sides. It just irks me to see, i've seen a policeman with one it was all flat and look like his hair was messy but under his hat he had a mohawk.
I can't think of other Trends or fads because I live in NYC and trends and Fads appear out of nowere and i dont notice them because they change so quickly.

Besides the average Pokemon, Yugioh,...
Naruto was big in my school towards the end of the year. Some people had memorized a lot of the hand signs to to jutsus. Somehow tomoagochi made a small comeback, mostly among the girls. But, it lasted like 3 weeks . Paper football was HUGE last year.
In terms of clothes, most of us dress normally. Our allowance money goes elsewhere.
Now that im going to a Catholic High school in two weeks, for all i know we'll probably get paddled for for showing any kind of individuality...

Fads are most of the time, absolutely LOL. Scubidos (or wahtever they were called). Pathetic. A piece of plastic string. Catherine Tate Show. Funny the first time, but the hundreth time the kid sitting next to me in English said "am I bovvered?" I wanted to destroy the TV. Bracelets. Oh. My. Gawd. How idiotic.
Fads are annoying, but at least they pass away normally, after a while (*sigh* Pokemon comes to mind).

Well ever since I moved here one of the main tend here in Texas is everyone wants a gril. Now in case you don't know what I'm talking about I'm not talking about a "Grill" that you cook food on I'm talking about the type of "Gril" you put in your mouth.I guess since most of the rappers are form Texas and they have there own Gril shops for the public.
Another trend that everyone is doing is alot of people are buying clothes that have Looney Toons on them and there made by LOT29. Now this fad I actually like since I have always liked the Looney Tunes. When your walking down the hallways you always see someone wearing something like that.
Another trend over here is any type of DS. More people have DS lites but it still evens out to be around the same amount between the two. Especially since they let you play them during lunch almost everyone has one. I remeber one time my friend Jeremy was playing one the AP's(assistant principles) in a game of MKDS.So that is also pretty popular.

Abercrombie is s00per popular in my school. Shirts with really big 'collars' (can't find another way to describe it) jeans with holes (0_o), etc. Weird. And Abercrombie is SOOOOOO expensive.

this is a strange trend, but the trend in my school is to wear deflated basketballs as hats during lunchbreak, the noobs look hilarious!
Oh yah, the term "noob" is used for peeps that just came to my school, I guess it is not really a trend, we just kinda sorta tricked them into it...

So, to the person who made this topic, your black shirt wasnt a form of following someone? You're whole free thinking attitude is a total copy of a whole group of "free thinkers" who think because they wear black instead of stripes their different. Well, hate to break it to ya, but everyone and their mom gets involved in trends. If you can possibly prove to me that nobody else in the world has ever worn black thinking their being different then maybe I'll agree with you, but until then you're just as big of a conformist as they are. So quit bitching and stop wearing black, you're not making anyone change their minds about anything.

[color=#A37AEE]Trends are huge in our school. The Emo look is big.... I swear to god... They think they're cool but they aren't. They're sad. Emo look + our school uniform = o_0
The Gamer look has suddenly been popping up on Non-Uniform Days. Everyone wearing shirts with "1 Up" on them or "Haxx0r" To be honest half of them are n00bs. Take this for example. We used to have a gaming club where we would sit and play games or discuss up coming games. Then the n00bs flooded in. Every n00b was challenging everyone. One of them challenged me to Halo 2.
n00b: I'll beat you easily! I've been playing this game for six years.
Me: It's only been out for two years

*ahem* Anyway, fads are SO ANNOYING to me. For I am not in the "popular" group, not even the regular group. ...I'm in with the unpopular kids, because
A) I like Pokemon
B) I am "fat", when it is MUSCLE, and just to let those jerks know, I took an online BMI and I am normal. They are "severly underweight". So haha.
C) I happen to follow the uniform code. Sorry, I'm not going to risk being grounded just because I want to untuck my shirt.
So yeah, I don't catch up on fads. More importantly, I DON'T CARE. Most of them are so stupid. I don't watch MTV, I don't watch the "OMG, this is the latest fashion! All you rich little girlsies and boysies, who are spoiled to the core, come buy [name of really stupid looking article of clothing] here! Come quick, there's ony a limited supply of Extra Extra Extra Small because we all know you want to show off your skin in public places! Come now, it'll be out in a few weeks and you'll be deemed 'uncool'!" shows, I prefer truthful and educational stuff. I'd much rather be addicted to the Health Channel then a brain bent on keeping the latest fashions.
And, I mean, I follow rules, but just because I tuck in my shirt during school doesn't mean I'm a geek. But seeing eleven and twelve-year-olds walking around with shirts with swearwords/..."older people" stuff on them, those fads are just sick.
*never shuts up on stuff she is strongly against*

we have uniform at my school, so there is no bullying about that, but on no-uniform days, or mufti days as we call them, it's like one big catwalk, where everyone gets judged by what they wear. it tears frends apart, and ruins everthing!
i know that one of my frends was dumped by his girlfrend wen he came into school wearing the 'wrong' type of jeans!
i never even knew there was a right or wrong type, they're all just jeans to me!
well, apart frm clothes, there isnt relly many fads goin round. the TV show Lost was a big hit, but that's died out now. i think, the biggest fad woz wen i woz in yr 7, (im in yr 10 now!) (Dont ask wot that is in grades, coz i dunno) when pokemon, yugioh, beyblade and loads of other games like that went round the WHOLE school. usually fads are kept within a year group, like only year 7s would play pokemon, but everyone played it. but then there was bullying coz sum people didn't want to trade, or liked it anymore, and so eventually pokemon was banned, but people still like it, just not as openly as before.
oops, ive just realised i seem to have gone on a bit. sorry!!

Okay, usually I tend to turn the other cheek to posts like this, but, meh, why not say what I feel?
I will not deny that I follow trends. I love Gothic styles. Am I Gothic? Not in the least, but I love the style of clothing that they wear. It just looks cool. One of my favorite shirts is an Inuyasha T-shirt, which I know every single Inuyasha fan probably owns as there's an entire rack of them at Hot Topic.
However, I do not follow trends simply because they're popular. I refuse to follow the current one at my school because I just hate the colors of the shirts and most of the people who wear them tend to bug me a little seeing as how I don't really understand sports (which they love to point out to me). A little while ago, punk/Goth/Emo/whatever the hell you want to call it belts were popular. You know, the ones with the metal studs and the skull for a buckle? I loved that trend, so I went out and bought one, not to fit in, but because I saw some people wearing them and thought "Wow, that would look great on me!".
So yeah, I agree that everyone tries so hard to be different that they're often the same. To some, that includes me, to others, not so much. I don't really care either way.
Oh, and I wear black because it matches almost any other color except different shades of black, and I'm kind of a freak about my clothes matching. Pet peeve of mine, I guess.
Ahh...feels great to say what's on your mind, doesn't it?

MegaMagikarp, please stop associating clothing to personalities. Not all goths wear black, likewise, not everyone who wears black is goth. Simple?
Anyway. There's a uniform at my former school. Though we do have freedress days. So many of the girls wear these tiny shirts and then throw these huge sweatshirts over that, what since does that make? And yes, many people have also called themselves "gansta." It's sad really. "Grills" made of aluminum foil doesn't look or feel too confortable.

MM's post never mentioned any of the things you're talking about, and was a perfectly legitimate post besides.
As for trends, there aren't really any big ones at my school; granted, I couldn't possibly care less about them, so maybe I just don't notice. I wear whatever I feel like wearing (which is usually whatever's on the top of the pile) and anyone else's opinion on my clothes isn't going to make me change them.

Trends? Hmmm....... my style is i dunt care bout nuthin. In my elementry school the trend was always differnt every month. Mostly card games and stuff liek that. I spent like all my muney on yu-gi-oh cards this one weekend right. But when i cmae back to school everyone was addicted to sumthing esle. Sum guy was like you still like yu-gi-oh! HAHA! I was so mad. This is about when i figured out that if you dont care about anything important you cant get stabbed in the back. Last year around the end everybody brouhgt there GBA to school and we al played pokemon. So ya... Dunt be a sheep, unless you want yearly shavings. Be a slowpoke! Be pink and slow.

Thanks Jiggz, I reread my post and nowhere did I once mention the term goth. All I said was that people who wear all black and complain about trends are hippocrites. Get over it, everything is a trend. Even "being original" is a trend. Every heard of liberals? Exactly. So basically stop putting words in my mouth and maybe you'll get something out of my post
Anyway, on the track of speaking your mind, well here it goes. You just admitted to yourself that you follow trends. But you try to justify it because you "thought it would look good". Hate to break it to ya, but everyone follows trends for that reason. Very few people buy things just because who they see as the upper class to them have it. For christ sake, if I saw a new style shirt that looked good on me come out I'll buy it. Not because someone more popular or whatever has it, but because it's something new that looks good that fits my tastes. People shop at Abercrombie for the same reason you bought that belt buckle, because they think it looks good and because it fits their own personal style. Just because everyone isn't like you doesn't mean they're all babbling idiotic robots that conform to every trend and fad. Sure, some people take that to an extreme by needing to do what everyone else does, and they are the execptions, but in all real scenerios the majority of trend followers does not think that way. Those other people just have a real self confidence problem.
Sorry, it's just that that whole "free thinking individualist" group bothers me because they always accuse everyone else of doing exactly what they've been doing in the first place.
Ya, it does feel good to speak your mind now doesn't it.
