SUPER SMASH BROS MELEE

Just as in the original, Pikachu is the only Pokemon initially available. After unlocking all eleven additional characters, brining the final roster to 25, there are four playable Pokemon. Jigglypuff returns from the first installment, joined by Mewtwo and Pichu, the only Generation II Pokemon. For more information on characters, see the SSBM Characters page. Again, it should be noted that since this game came out before Ruby and Sapphire, it includes only Generation I and II Pokemon.

This game includes two Pokemon stages. Available at the start is the Kanto Pokemon Stadium. The stage has a sterile default form which cycles through Grass, Water, Fire, and Rock themes. The second unlockable stage is Poke Floats, said to exist in the Kanto Skies. Essentially, characters fight on large balloons floating through the sky. The stage follows a cycle through balloons of the following Pokemon in this order:

Pokemon Appearing in Poke Floats
Squirtle
Onix
Psyduck
Chikorita
Weezing
Slowpoke
Porygon
Wooper
Sudowoodo
Snorlax
Venusaur
Seel
Wobbuffet
Unown
Goldeen
Lickitung
Chansey
Geodude

Again Pokemon appear in Poke Balls. They are listed along with what they do here. In addition to those listed, it seems that plans were underway to include a Ditto which was supposed to Transform into the character that called it, and follow the character around. Probably due to difficulties associated with this unique attack, it was removed from the final game. Electrode is unique in that it can be picked up and thrown at enemies before exploding.

A new addition to the series, Trophies, naturally included representatives from the Pokemon universe. Each of the playable characters is also represented in three trophies, attained by using those characters to beat the Classic, Adventure, and All-Star modes. Trophies of other Pokemon can be obtained randomly during normal play, such as using the Trophy Lottery or simply scattered throughout single-player regular matches. In addition to trophies of Pokemon are trophies of the Gym Leader Misty, a Poke Ball, the Pokemon Stadium stage, Professor Oak, and the ZERO-ONE from Pokemon Snap. The Entei trophy must be earned by beating the Event Match, Trophy Tussle 2, which involves a battle on top of the Entei trophy.
