SUPER SMASH BROS GAMEPLAY
The main aspect of the Super Smash Bros. games is the damage meter. By using attacks on your opponents you cause their damage meter to rise. Damage is indicated as a percentage, although this is somewhat arbitrary since damage continues to rise even after 100%. Varying attacks will inflict varying amounts of damage. The more damage a character takes the farther they fly when hit by attacks. A character will lose a life when they are knocked too far off of any of the sides of the stage.
Each character can perform a variety of attacks, the first being the standard attack, used by pressing the attack button. By tilting the control stick in any direction and then pressing the attack button a strong attack is used. By tilting the control stick and pressing the attack button simultaneously, a smash attack is used. Smash attacks are generally the used to launch an opponent the furthest, hopefully off the stage.
Aerial attacks are performed by being in the air through jumping, falling, or being hit into the air and then pressing the attack button. Tilting the control stick at the same time will make direction-specific attacks. Other techniques include grabs and throws, shielding and dodging and several other techniques that are simply beyond the scope of this website.
Aside from the standard attack button there is also a special attack button. In the original Smash Bros. for Nintendo 64 there were three kinds of special attacks, a standard special attack as well as up and down special attacks when the control stick was tilted up and down. Super Smash Bros. Melee for the GameCube added a side special move for when the control stick was tilted to the left or right. Super Smash Bros. Brawl on Wii introduces a new super-powerful kind of special attack called a Final Smash. Final Smashes can only be used by obtaining an item called a Smash Ball, and then can only be used once per Smash Ball. Smash Balls unlike most items cannot just be picked up, they have to be broken open by inflicting damage on them.
