POKEMON RANGER FIELD MOVES
Field Moves are Fiore's version of HMs. They have the same general idea, although as you are a Ranger, you have to release your Pokemon after it does its job. Field Moves are used to clear targets from your path, and these targets may be things like boulders, trees, or bushes. To use them, just draw a line from the Pokemon to use the move to the target.
All targets have a special type of Field Move that corresponds to them, like a rock would require a Crush and a log would need a Burn. Some may also need a more powerful Field Move to remove them, and this scale of power is measured by a number of icons. There are three levels of this power, and you can check what the target needs by simply selecting it.
Clearing a target is usually quite easy; targets require a certain power, and only Pokemon with that power can take care of it. Unfortunately, you can't use multiple Pokemon with a weaker Field Move to clear one harder target. Furthermore, if you do try to use a Pokemon's Field Move to clear a target that it can't, it won't be released. However, Pokemon that have more than the required amount can easily clear the target.
There are nine different types of Field Moves, and they are used for a variety of purposes as stated above. Here is a table detailing them individually:
Burn
Ice, Bundled Hay
Blaziken, Torkoal
Most Fire Pokemon have this type of Field Move. This is just a basic Field Move, and its only major use other than clearing specific targets is to obtain Regice.
Cross
Post (only)
Tangela, Bulbasaur
This Field Move has no special power to it and is used to cross gaps with a Post on the other side. You can also use it on a Post on your side of the gap, but it won't help you much. This is also significant in capturing each of the Regis.
Crush
Boulder, Rock Wall
Golem, Rhydon
This Field Move is one of the most commonly used throughout Fiore, even out of missions. It is significant for obtaining many unique Pokemon.
Cut
Metal Fence, Shrub
Scyther, Meowth
Cut is occasionally used in missions. There are also a few Shrubs in various places around Lyra Forest blocking some rare Pokemon's nests that require Cut.
Flash
Lab Basement (only)
Staryu (only)
Flash is only used once in the whole game and during a mission. It is also a unique Field Move and Staryu is the only Pokemon with it. All it does is light up Professor Hastings' lab basement.
Gust
Big Mushroom, Huge Flower
Altaria, Taillow
This Field Move is only used to capture a few special Pokemon. These Pokemon hide in the ground with the tops of their bodies sticking out. These Pokemon include Parasect, Lotad, Oddish, Gloom and Vileplume and are quite easy to distinguish when first seen.
Recharge
None
Jolteon, Pichu
Recharge is exactly like the Electric Poke Assist that accompanies it. It can be used merely by selecting the Pokemon. Depending on the Pokemon's power, it can replenish your Styler's energy by a certain amount. For the first level, you get five restored, the second, 15, and the third (max), your Styler's energy is fully restored. You can also use this when your Styler's energy is full, but it won't do much.
Soak
Vine, Rugged Rock
Mudkip, Swampert
This Water-based Field Move is not used very commonly in the game. For example, in your first rookie mission, you end up putting out a tree on fire even though there won't be any more trees on fire later. Other than growing vines to get to some rare Pokemon, it can be used to get a Geodude or Graveler out of hiding. It is also used against a Steelix in one of the missions, and that's one of the only times you'll need it.
Tackle
Big Tree, Trash Can
Phanpy, Heracross
Tackle is important for knocking rare Pokemon out of trees in some parts of Fiore. It's use with a Trash Can, however, it only is useful once in the whole game, and that occurs when you're looking for some lost Skitty.
