POKEMON PLATINUM WALKTHROUGH

Spear Pillar

As you head up the stairs, you'll take on two Galactic Grunts in a double battle. I'd recommend saving at this point, because if you have serious troubles with the trainer battles ahead, you will want to go back and train some more. In any case, proceed further and Galactic Commanders Mars and Jupiter will double battle you and your rival.

A point of reassurance: your rival will heal your Pokemon completely after this battle, so give it all you've got. This battle can be extremely difficult since your rival's choices tend to be rather misfortunate at times, so it means you're basically battling both Pokemon by yourself. On the brightside, he can be used as a punching bag to absorb the opponents' attacks. Be careful of Bronzor and Golbat's Confuse Rays, and Skuntank's Smokescreen - you don't want to be putting things up to chance. Hope that both Bronzor don't manage to get Light Screen and Reflect up. They both have Levitate, so stick with Fire-type attacks. The best strategy is to concentrate on one Pokemon until one trainer is defeated, then focus on the other.

When the battle is over, your rival will heal your Pokemon and leave. Cyrus will then attempt to use the power he extracted from Azelf, Mesprit and Uxie. Dialga and Palkia will both be summoned, causing Giratina to emerge from the Distortion World. As Cyrus disappears, you'll see Cynthia rush up to Spear Pillar with you. When you're ready, enter the vortex.

The Distortion World

You can freely enter and leave the Distortion World through the portal. Follow Cynthia as she walks across some pretty trippy terrains. Jump the ledge to where she's standing and walk on top of the sunken patch to activate the elevator. For future reference, these sunken patches will usually invoke some kind of action on the platform you're on. At the bottom, follow her across the floating islands and proceed. You'll see Mesprit appear, so continue left and the camera will change as you fly onto the wall.

When you reach the elevator with two rocks on it, activate its movement by standing on the sunken patch in the middle, then proceed to the top patch of the next platform, then the left patch on the one after that. You'll fly onto the wall where Cynthia is waiting. The other sunken patches will move the platform, but they lead to dead ends.

Continue right as far as you can, then down and left when you reach a new set of moving platforms. Take the top patches on the next two platforms, and you'll descend onto another level. Head right and you'll end up on a platform with three rocks. Activate the center patch to descend lower, and then head down and a magic platform will appear.

Cyrus will meet you briefly here. The platforms you're on now have another trick: the sunken patches will make visible platforms disappear and make invisible platforms appear. From where you are, head down, right and up and you'll make a platform appear. Cross the platform and take the path leading down, just to your right. Cross it and continue right until you reach a platform with five rocks on it. Activate it and cross the floating platforms to your left. You'll meet Uxie soon after.

Jump the ledge and use Strength on the boulder there. Push it down and it'll fall into the level below. Head down and hop onto the elevator, but don't use it quite yet. Head left and Mesprit will appear and motion for you to drop the boulder there into the chasm below. You can't head back because of the ledges, so head down and take the elevator with five rocks on it and it'll ascend to the level above. Head left and you'll end up on a platform with disappearing objects, so make your way through that by sticking to the outside of the platform.

Hop onto the elevator with four rocks (you'll see Cyrus to the right) and it'll take you back to the area with the magic platforms. From the elevator, hop across and head down and right onto another elevator, this time with four rocks on it. This will take you to where Cyrus is. Continue onwards and Giratina will buzz past. Head onto the wall and the camera will change. Continue upwards and you'll fly upside down! Surf up...or down...or whatever...the waterfall and you'll end up on the right part of the level where Uxie and Mesprit were. Drop the boulder there into the gap as Azelf appears, then head left and take the elevator down.

When the elevator stops moving, head up and use Strength on the boulder, and drop it into the hole next to where Uxie is floating. Head to the left part of the level where Mesprit is. Again, use Strength and drop the boulder into the hole next to Mesprit. Finally, head to the right part of the level and repeat for Azelf. Talk to Cynthia on the bottom part of the level, and an elevator will appear that will take you to where Cyrus is waiting. Talk to him, and he'll battle you.

Hopefully you've trained your Pokemon to a decent level prior to this battle. Staraptor's Close Combat should take out Houndoom and Weavile, while an Electric type can take out Honchkrow, Crobat and Gyarados. As you can see from the movesets, there are several status inducing moves like Toxic and Will-O-Wisp that can be very annoying if they're inflicted. Weavile is extremely quick and can sweep your team if you don't have the right defenses.

After the battle with Cyrus, he'll leave and Cynthia will fully heal your Pokemon. Head north and you will face Giratina in its Origin Forme. Now is a good time to save if you want to catch it.

Legendary Pokemon Battle

Giratina (Origin Forme)
Try your luck with a Quick Ball to start with, otherwise standard strategy applies for catching Pokemon. At level 47, Giratina knows Omnious Wind, AncientPower, Dragon Claw and its unique move, Shadow Force. Your best bet is to put it to sleep and hammer away at its HP. Make sure one of your Pokemon can tank Giratina's attacks - a Steel Pokemon is ideal for these. If you have Timer Balls, they start becoming effective after 15 turns in battle, otherwise stick with Dusk Balls if it's night, or Ultra Balls otherwise. If you fail to capture it, you can try again in Turnback Cave.

Cynthia and Cyrus will show up and talk briefly. When you're in control, examine the portal and you'll be teleported to Spring Path, which lies to the east of Route 214. Use Rock Climb to get out, and make your way to Sandgem Town to report your adventure to Professor Rowan. At this point in time, Azelf, Mesprit and Uxie can be found in their respective lakes so you can go and catch them if you wish. To get to the eighth gym however, head to Valor's lakeside hotel and head east onto Route 222.

There's little to see on Route 222, so you can just battle all the trainers and head to the gatehouse on the other side. As you emerge from it, Flint from the Pokemon League will talk with you and tell you that Sunyshore's Gym Leader, Volkner, has lost his "spark" for battle. Go to the Lighthouse in the southeast corner of town by using the overhead walkways, and talk to Volkner. He'll head back to his gym and wait for you.

Take your time in exploring the city. A man who lives just behind the Lighthouse will give you Poketch apps if you show him Pokemon of a particular nature. There's a lady who will give you ribbons depending on what day of the week it is in the northeast corner of town. The gym is just to the west of this lady, and you'll see Flint standing outside. Talk to him and he'll let you inside.

When you enter, walk on the gear and press the green button on the right, then make your way to the other green button. Press that one down to reach the next room. Step on the blue button three times, then head up the stairs to the left. Battle the trainer and continue down on the gear there. Hit the blue switch once, then head right and hit the green switch once, then make your way up the stairs and past the bridge on the right, then head into the next room. In this last room, make your way onto the gear and press the red button. Walk off the gear and onto the middle gear again, then go left and press the red button once, then go down. Head up the stairs and past the bridge, then step on the green switch twice, then make your way to the blue switch. Step on it once, then head around and down the stairs and hit the right red button once. Go past the bridge again and head around to take on Gym Leader Volkner.

The Ground type is not only immune to Electric attacks, it is also able to deal double damage to Electric Pokemon, so it's clear that a Ground Pokemon should be able to sweep the four Pokemon here. Just be careful of Luxray's Ice Fang, otherwise there really isn't much to worry about in this battle. If you don't have Ground Pokemon or Earthquake, stick with some strong physical moves since Volkner's Pokemon have low physical defense.

After you defeat Volkner, you will be awarded the Beacon Badge, which will allow you to use HM07 (Waterfall) outside of battle and make all Pokemon of any level obey you. He will also give you TM57 - Charge Beam, which has a 70% chance of raising your Pokemon's Special Attack.
