The official Pokemon Black and White site has updated with the release date of the game (March 6, 2011) and several new English names:
-Chiraamii, the Chinchilla Pokemon, becomes Minccino (mink + chino). Its trademark attack is Tail Slap. -Gigaiasu, the Compressed Pokemon, becomes Gigalith (giga + monolith). -Hihidaruma, the Blazing Pokemon, becomes Darmanitan (dharma + orangutan?). Its ability is Sheer Force. -Meguroko, the Desert Croc Pokemon, becomes Sandile (sand + crocodile). Its new ability now known as Moxie. -Mamepato, the Tiny Pigeon Pokemon, becomes Pidove (pigeon + dove), which has the Big Pecks ability. (A pun on "big pecs," as this is "Pigeon Heart" in Japan.) -Shimama, the Electrified Pokemon, becomes Blitzle (a variation of blitz, or perhaps blitz + dazzle?). -Giaru, the Gear Pokemon, becomes Klink (a sound that small metal objects make). -Munna, the Dream Eater Pokemon, retains her Japanese name, and her move Telekinesis retains its Japanese name too.
As mentioned previously, Zoroark's Sharpen Claws has become Hone Claws, and Zorua and Zoroark's Trickery has become Foul Play.
Huin City has become Castelia City, while Professor Araragi has been renamed Professor Juniper.
I don't like Pidove or Sandile, only cause they've got half of Pidgey and Totodile's names, but I'm a picky pants. I like the others though :) but "Juniper" seems a bit odd to me for the Prof.
*In some random Gym Battle* Klink! I choose you! XDD That's just too funny!
I think Blitzel is Blitz+Gazelle or something like that. I must say, this batch of names is quite good. Juniper is a good change! From trees to flowers...
Actually, Infernape77, Juniper does not get her name from the planet Jupiter, but rather from the Juniper Tree, keeping to the form of Professors being named after trees. But, really, they couldn't pick a better tree to name her after? Aspen would've been cool, and (to me) is more feminine sounding than Juniper.
Usually I don't get too worked up over Pokemon names, but come on. Has the creativity well already run so dry? Pidove is just... awful... And not a very funny word combo. Here's hoping its final Evolution is better. And same goes for Sandile.
@Ghost Writer Eww, they named the bird Pokemon after two birds, how unoriginal! Back in Gen I, when they actually knew how to name Pokemon, the birds were named after birds!
@Victori Totally. I mean, it's a desert crocodile; naming it after sand and crocodile is a complete ripoff of the older games!
My favourite new names are Gigalith and Blitzle - I think they sound awesome. My least favourite are Klink and Pidove. I'm glad Munna kept her Japanese name. :)
I like the names of Castelia City and Professor Juniper. I'm not fond of "Big Pecks" but the other moves and abilities sound cool.
@rex09 - Only one person has said they disliked the name Klink, I believe... Almost everyone else that mentioned the name thought it was funny. But with the second part of your comment, yeah, most people will just name them something else, so it really doesn't matter. ;)
@Jigglypuff When I used the word "creativity", I made the assumption people would be able to follow along and understand my meaning. Looks like I was wrong. So, allow me to clarify. Obviously, Pidove is a mix of pidgeon and Dove, and just as obvious, Pidgey is a reference to Pidgeon. It's standard to name the Pokemon after the animals they were based on, or characteristics that the creators give them. And I'm fine with that, in fact, I love it.
However, when I say they lack creativity, I'm talking about their ability to combine words into something that is either cool or funny, and something that meshes together. Pidove does not. It is not smooth, nor does it roll off the tongue with ease. It grates on the ears (or at least mine). It just doesn't look like it was really thought out, and is just a lazy mashing together of words.
But, as I said, I rarely get worked up over the names, since the ones I get picky over are first evolutions, and their final evolutions oft
@Ghost Writer + Jigglypuff Regardless of the creativity behind it, it's true that it just doesn't sound right. Poor Pidove...I still love him though :)
Random note: Here's a calculator that helps unlock additional PC wallpapers and a few eggs from Primo, just in case this isn't already available on the site somewhere. (This isn't my calculator- I just found it.)
I think they worked more on the names in gen 1-4. In gen 3-4 the names started to get worse, but still good. It seems now that they're too lazy to think too much about the names. Sandile sounds dorky, the same goes for Pidove. Blitzle is good, more like the old names.
Castelia city is better than hiun city, though
Proffessor Juniper ? Could'nt they come up with something better?
@Frost - I don't mean this in a rude way, but you seem to come off a little brazen some of the time. I totally appreciate your work on the site, but you don't exactly seem to be self-aware... And I do mean that in the nicest way possible. :
minccino-Mini+Chinchilla(however i dont get why the O when o is a masculine vowel where as a is the feminine, cause minccino has a 75% chance of being female and only 25% of being male for gender)
Its not easy coming up with 150 new name for pokemon and the ppl over in Japan are doin the best they can so all of ya'll who are whining about the new names go over there and come up with the other 135 name plus the cities and ppl
@frenchhorn95 Someone's clearly never read any science fiction. Why on earth would we make Frost self-aware? His programming allows us to control him through cute Pokemon and Madonna's music. If we ever let him be self-aware, he'd have the world conquered with adorable pop culture in less than 72 hours.
Keep in mind that chinchillas have a long history of being used for their fur. 'Min' comes from mini or mink (another animal famous for its fur) and 'ccino' from chino cloth, a type of fabric used for clothing (see the connection). @dragontamer1021 the site is set on a timezone different than yours @frenchhorn95...second it...cough
@Jigglypuff - If you checked Frost's forum thing ordering the best Pokemon, you'd see that cute Pokemon don't necessarily have an effect on him. Togepi is pretty low on the list... Other than that, I have no idea what you're talking about. You've deluded yourself into thinking some college guy obsessed with Pokemon could take over the world? Not saying I would object to that, but highly unlikely that would happen.
I'd love to reply to the people in this talkback, but I know I can't defend my friend without being called insensitive, mean, spiteful, etc.
I'll just say I see nothing with what Frost said. He did not make any personal insults, he didn't curse, he simply pointed out that PST stood for something. I'm starting to wonder if he's giving up writing his B/W walkthrough, and if he does, I can't say I blame him. After people make rude comments and insult our website, I probably wouldn't want to help them out either.
Why is it that, when ever tries to answer an obvious question everyone immediately thinks it's an insult to their abilities to think. This always happens when ever new names are announced. Frost only pointed out the obvious to people and then people get mad. :l
Well, really, I should be the one apologizing. Sorry to everyone that this turned into some heated debate. Looking back, some of what I said was kind of hypocritical. Frost, your work on the walkthrough really is more than excellent. I'd hate to see you stop working on that because of some trivial argument. I offer my sincerest apologies and hope that you'll continue your greatly appreciated hard work.
Well sometimes you just have to be patient with someone who asks something that might seem obvious to you... Anyway, does anyone know if Zoroark's type is treated as the Illusion pokemon's in an in-game battle?
Manafi is right - sometimes you have to be patient with people who say stupid things, especially when you work on a popular Pokemon website. There are children who use this site, and if they ask silly questions they have a very good reason for not knowing. (I'm not calling anybody a child - I'm just pointing out that it's hard to tell over the Internet.)
And Frost, we all appreciate your work on the B/W walkthrough. It's fantastic, it will help people as they play the games, and you should be proud of your achievement.
Frost, i've only just joined but i've used your walkthrus for quite a few years now cause they're clear and easy to use. yes a lot of people will try to judge you thru your comments but you can't let people like them stop you from what you're good at doing for this site. I'm sorry your new year started like this.
