Tepig is supposed to be Tepid (lukewarm) +Pig

Ok... what did they do to the names of these pokemon? to me, it seems like they tried to hard to make a witty name.

Awesome, odd names tho.

The only one that I like is Oshawott. The other two are just lost on me.

Yeah, Tepig is Tepid (which is basically the same as lukewarm) and pig of course.
I think Snivy is the only one I like, Tepig's fine, but what the heck is up with Oshawott?

actually there are 7 english names for pokemon bw: the 3 starters, the 2 legendaries, zoroack and zoroa

The thing I don't get about "Tepig" coming from "tepid" is that Pokabu IS the Fire Starter. Why would it only be "lukewarm" unless its evolutions also had names related to heat, each increasing with intensity I guess?

And Zoroa's English name has not been officially confirmed yet. There's a 99.99% chance that it will be Zoroa, but I'm not updating the dex and reporting it until there's confirmation.

I will forever remember Oshawott as the Ocelot Pokemon even though the only resemblance is in name. :)

Great, now I'll just have to confuse my non-japanese speaking friends by refering to most pokemon by their japanese name.
And the region.

Unova? I'll get used to it. I also will miss calling Oshawott Mijumaru, but, again, I'll get used to it.

But really, Tepig sounds like Teh Pig to me. Nonetheless, I'm sure I'll get used to these names, and they'll become normal for me.

Snivy is fine. Oshawott may sound a little strange but it's alright. Change a couple of letters and it sounds like Auto-Wash, hehe
Tepig is one of my favorite gen 5 pokes so I hoped for something a little better but it's ok I guess...not that it had to be something more obvious like Emboar ^_^

By the way, here are the French and German names: Snivy (Vipelierre, Serpifeu) Tepig (Gruikui, Floink) Oshawott (Moustillon, Ottaro).

WTF? these names look more like japanise than english names, plus they are all bad

i really have lost faith in nintendo for these names, although i do kinda like tepig. the rest are just kinda awkward sounding. are they doing another update like this before the games come out?

The names well... i can live with them, but seriously UNOVA!?!?!!(not good at all). What was wrong with isshu, i know the wanted to give it a feeling of a fresh start but unova is too much....

Honestly I liked all the japanese names better. That includes the region name. Though looking back at the names of some of the past generations, I can deal with them.

i think the names make alot of sense. Snivy is the obvious one. tepig i think instead of being tepid and pig its more like temperature and pig. and oshawott is ocean and otter kinda a romanticized way of sea otter.

If those names where supposed to impres me, they didn't. As for the region,why? I think that'll just confuse the heck out of people.

Well, Oshawott comes from the city Oshawa in Canada and their team references otters but why Canada?
And I think Unova comes from -UN-ited states -OF- (ov) -A-merica

I seriously doubt that Oshawott's name has anything to do with Canada. That probably just wanted to use ocean + otter but thought "Oceotter" would be hard to pronounce for the kiddies.

And I don't know how renaming the region is supposed to confuse people. The only people outside of Japan who knew it was called "Isshu" in the first place are hardcore fans.

The english names are bad. I don't like them. They almost not sound like english names. I thought it would be names more like the old pokemon names. I guess it was better in the old days......maybe i'll get used to it, maybe not, but actually, I think Unova isn't that bad, it's a pretty cool name and a fresh new start. I think I'll get used to that name.

Unova should sound familiar to anyone who speaks a Latin-based language. It seems to be based on unum (one, like Spanish uno) and nova (new, like Portuguese nova). And coincidentally the region is based on New York.
It is weird though that they made a different name for each language (French-Unys, German-Einall, Italian-Unima, Spanish-Teselia)....Teselia??

they should have stick with the japanese names cuz pokabu sounds alot better than tepig
or at least they could have name pokabu sumthing like pig-a-boo!

Sucky names or not, I'm still picking the Grass Starter like I did in every region but Hoenn.

i would rather like if people wouldnt complain.sure ive got a few things to say about the names but that was before.i already got used to it, because i didnt protest against it.you might not know it, but the more you single out some things like "i hate those names,i liked the old games more ive lost hope for pokemon" or something, you probably will continue to dislike them. for thanksgiving, lets just be gratefull for what we have.the pokemon makers work very hard to give you this awesome pokemon entertainment.Blessings: charizard, new pokemon games, friends,food,life,family, e.t.c. first of all, picture me saying this in a caring tone because i read it and it sounds kinda like too much critisisum. anyway, have a good thanksgiving everybody,hope to learn more about the games soon,cause this waiting SUCKS.hold on everyone, 2011 is just around the corner. hhhhhaaaaaahahahahaha you know how pokemon float around sometimes and you have to catch them? there was this bidoof floating around and i decided not to catch it. i ignored it for awhile cause it kept annoying me but finnally, it disapeared or something.hahaahahahahhaha...........awww its not funny anymore:(

@Manafi i speak spanish and it sounds wierd, maybe it is because it breaks with the tradition ofthe other regions. But in a second thought... it is supposed to be a far away region so maybe the new name makes sense...

Unova = Uno (meaning One) + Nova (meaning New). "New One"... yeah, real creative.

It doesn't sound like a sneeze to me - it sounds like "issue". But then again, I was already used to the name.

"Unova" just sounds weird. And having studied Latin, knowing what it means... it just seems lame.

Unova, better than Isshu. When I say Isshu, my friend always misunderstand it and think I'm saying "Issue"

Greatest irony of all: everybody complaining about names that, in six months time, almost certainly will have replaced the Japanese names in about 95% of the western fandom's minds.

Or did you guys forget how Rukario, Pochama, Naetoru and Hikozaru were the onlyyyy names for Lucario, Piplup, Turtwig and Chimchar four years ago?

I actually have to agree with Frost on this one. When the games finally come out, none of y'all will really care what the names are. Besides, what does it really matter what they're named? I thought people played games just for the fun of playing.

I honestly don't care what the names of the starters are. In the end, no one even uses these guys. We all (I think) evolve our pokémon. So everyone should just wait, until the names of the evolutions are revealed, to complain.

Isn't the point of having a talkbacks to comment on the post? I don't see the problem with people complaining.

Either way, the names aren't bad. They're bizarre now, but we'll get used to them.

People can complain all they want. However, I'm just pointing out that, even though people are complaining how the English names suck versus the Japanese names right now, they most likely will have forgotten the Japanese names in six months and will be using the English names extensively.

Trust me, I've sat through this pattern three times. Even in the GSC days, people who speak English (including myself) saw a new Pokemon, learned the Japanese name, got used to calling the new Pokemon with the Japanese name, heard the new English name, immediately thought it was really stupid, but eventually came around to using the English name anyway.

A lot of the shock and outrage that people have for the English names right now is because they're a change from what we've come to expect. I recommend that the haters give the names some time. The Japanese names sound cooler because we've had a few months to get used to them and/or they're more exotic.

@frost i heard and used the japanese names a few weeks ago talking to my cousin and the english name isn't tat bad compare to the japanese name for GCS and i still have the japanese version of gold

@Frost... I'm not a "hater". I'm just pointing out that having already gotten used to the Japanese names, the English names seem rather awkward right now.

It's like adjusting to a new name for your pet. It takes time to get used to it, I know - but for now, the new names just seem... odd.
...Although, I will admit that I'm already getting used to Snivy and Oshawott... and for the record, I got used to Turtwig instantly because it was such a brilliant name.

Here's an idea...
If you don't like the name of the starter you pick, you could always give them a nickname like the old ones. Just sayin'.

I think they should release the names of anything that came out before the game because they are like the unofficial official mascots of the region, like Denchura and Desukaan (forgive my spelling). Has anybody heard release dates for names before games, if so let me know. And i did not mean to rhyme.

What they released first in Japan doesn't necessarily affect what they release first outside of Japan, but so far we've gotten Zoroark and then the Starters, which is how Japan also did it. Except that Reshiram and Zekrom should have been next based on Japan's release schedule, but we got them first because they debuted worldwide rather than only in Japan.

@Ghost Writer exactly my thought. but some people might not be happy that the pokemon's real names are still (so and so.) but you can name them the japanese names. eh, ive always been the person to think of something clever for a nickname. heres one that i came up in my earlier years: female lapras nickname: Shelly. im pretty sure i named the male one i got lochnos for the lochnos monster XD. alright im getting a little off topic. :O

@patrickpokeman44 - Both walkthroughs are great, actually. The marriland.com one is more for just skimming through - good for those who want to know the basics of the game before it comes out. Frost's is more geared toward in-depth with specifics which is better for reading while playing. But yeah, Frost has other things to worry about than the walkthrough...

Speaking of the walkyhrough, when is the next installment?

I've barely even started part five. Sorry, guys, I have three weeks left of this semester, which means school projects to do, and my remaining freetime has been spent on Final Fantasy games lately because I find BW pretty boring.

The walkthrough will be completed, but it's not on the top of my priority list right now. Especially because there's still a good four or five months until the English release.

My sister's dog changed name and in the beginning it all felt like a dream. It felt so weird. "It can't be true" I thought, and for a long time I thought that way. But then you get used to it. Now I even like the new name better.

So, I agree frost, we'll get used to these new names, we just need a little time. It will feel better after a while......

I'd like to ask, does anyone have any suggestions for names that would be 'more awesome'? Because I haven't seen any yet. Do you remember being 8 and pronouncing the simple generation 1 names wrong? I do. That is why they don't keep them in Japanese, I'd assume. Also, I know it's been mentioned, but I'm pretty sure Nintendo knew what they were doing when they gave you the option to rename your Pokemon (though I never did until the Nuzlocke Challenge).

And @Frost, just beat FF13 after 59 hours of gameplay.. I can't imagine when we'll see the end of said Part 5... Haha

i found a japanese translator site where if you break down the pokemon's japanese name into seperate syllables, you can get at least half of its name in english. its cool.

and i agree with mudkip eez aswome, but "-wott" is a combination of "water" and "otter". and "osha-" is basically "ocean". so you are right on that one.

These names aren't even a big deal! No one even notices them in a battle, and if they do, half the world's people pronounce it wrong!

This is really off topic, but I've always been wondering, is that "Bad Egg" true? (The one where you leave an egg in the PC for a long time, then take it out and delete your saved file.)

As far as I can tell, they didn't change the legends' names. And I'm going to call oshawott "Swotter," because "oshawott" is too long to remember. Plus, I'm laaazy.

It seems like you're implying that Nintendo of America screwed up the romanization when in reality Nintendo of Japan registered the trademark for that romanization back in June, which means it is the official romanization. I know that they used a ro and not a ru in the katakana, so the official romanization isn't consistent with the katakana, but it is still official, so saying it's simply incorrect is misleading.

They both screwed up. Nintendo of Japan screwed up for making the romanization Zorua, and Nintendo of America screwed up for not fixing it for the English version. Zorua makes no sense either way, especially when it evolves into ZorOark and not ZorUark.

@Frost Well anything can happen in Pokemon! Look at Remoraid and Octillery for example...
