POKEMON FIRE RED AND LEAF GREEN WALKTHROUGH
Route 5 and Route 6
Taking the left or right paths south will skip the grass and daycare in this area. Taking the center path will lead you to the Daycare Man's house. If you give him one of your Pokemon he will train your Pokemon. It gains one EXP point for every step you take. He will charge you Y100 for looking after you Pokemon and Y100 for every level it grows. This is not a Breeding Center. If you enter the building directly south of the Daycare Man's house the guard won't let you through. Instead, enter the building to the right of this. The girl inside will trade you her Nidoran F in FireRed or her Nidoran M in LeafGreen for your Nidoran of the opposite gender. Head down the stairwell and continue along the long tunnel. Head up the stairs at the other end and out of the building onto Route 6. This area has a lot af grass and a few trainers. The best idea is to follow the yellow path which will eventually take you south. Following this path you encounter trainers in the following order:
Walk south from these two trainers and you will enter Vermilion City!
Vermilion City
Pokeball | 200 |
Super Potion | 700 |
Antidote | 100 |
Paralyz Heal | 200 |
Awakening | 250 |
Ice Heal | 250 |
Repel | 350 |
First let's get all the little stuff out of the way, because there is quite a lot to do in this city. Firstly head to the left building above the Gym. Go inside and listen to the President. This is the Pokemon fan club. He will give you a Bike Voucher! If you are very desperate for a bike you can run all the way back to Cerulean City and exchange the voucher for one but we will be heading back that way later so you may as well wait a bit.
In the house to the right of this, a girl wants to trade her Farfetch'd
for your Spearow.
Inside the Pokemon Center, the lady standing at the counter will give you a VS Seeker. This tells you any previously-fought trainers around you who want to re-battle.
In the house to the left of the Pokecenter a Fisherman will give you an Old Rod. This can only catch Magikarp.
Now there are a range of things to do, and you can do them in any order you want but I suggest doing them in the following order. So let's start with the S.S. Anne. From the shop in Vermilion, head to the right a bit and south down the grey path. Follow it along and the Sailor will ask you for your ticket (which Bill gave you) so continue onto the boat. There are lots of rooms on the S.S. Anne, and some have trainers. We will call the floor we walked in on the '1st Floor'. Let's start with the top right hand room. Inside is a Gentleman.
The room to the left of this is your room. Talk to the lady and she will allow you to rest, fully healing your Pokemon. Entering the room to the left of this will immediately start another battle.
In the next two rooms there are no trainers or anything of interest. The room to the left of this there are two trainers willing to battle. We'll start with the first girl, then the boy:
At the bottom of their cabin is TM31 - Brick Break. In the final room there is nothing again. From here head down the path on the left to the door at the end. You should be in a Kitchen. In the bottom left hand corner of the room is a Great Ball, and in the three garbage cans on the right side of the room are three different Berries. Obtaining the first Berry will also put the Berry Bag into use. All
Berries you find will now go into the Berry Bag, which can be accessed from the Key Items part of your bag.

Now exit the Kitchen and head north and then all the way to the right, and then south and go down the stairs. The bin next to the stairs contains a Hyper Potion. Let's go through the rooms on this level. In the first room there is a Super Potion, so grab it. There are no trainers so head into the next room on the left. There are two sailors. The Sailor closest to the door has his stats listed first, and then the second sailor:
When you enter the next room you will instantly be challenged:
Grab the Ether in his room and head onto the next room on the left. Inside is another Sailor:
Grab TM44 - Rest which is in his room and head onto the final room, which has two trainers. The one on the right is listed first:
Machop |
Level 20 |
| Money Earned: P640 |
Leave the room and head all the way right and up the stairs. Then up and all the way left and up those stairs. You should now be on 'Floor 2'. Head south and up those stairs to 'Floor 3'. Continue all the way left and out onto the deck. There are two trainers here, head to the right and the Sailor in the middle will battle, his stats are listed first. The second trainer is the sailor to the left of him on the bow of the boat.
Head back down to 'Floor 2'. The first door on the left has only a man who mentions Snorlax. Talking to him will put Snorlax's Dex entry as 'seen' but not captured obviously. Head into the next room, the room to the right of his. There are two trainers, listed with the closest first:
Pikachu |
Level 23 |
| Money Earned: P1656 |
Grab the Stardust in this room and exit. There is nothing of interest in the next room, so head into the one after. Inside is a Lass (top) and a Gentleman (left):
In their room be sure to grab the X Attack. Now there is nothing of interest in the last two rooms and do not go past them yet as you will be fighting your rival. So now return to 'Floor 1' and heal up in your room. You can get off the ship if required to buy items or catch more suitable Pokemon.

He hasn't leveled up much so it's only really evolutions which have occured. Kadabra will be the difficulty here, not just Teleport this time, but other Psychic moves will take your team out pretty quick if you aren't trained up enough. Raticate has pretty high attack too, so be careful of Hyper Fang. Pikachu or Geodude can take out Pidgeotto pretty easily because Sand Attack is very annoying. His starter shouldn't be too hard with a simple elemental attack.
After beating your Rival, continue up the stairs into the Captain's room. Talk to him and you'll find out that he is sick, and that is why the S.S. Anne has been lingering in Vermilion. He will then give you HM01 - Cut! HM's (along with a few TM's) can be used outside of battle. Cut cuts down those small trees blocking your path everywhere! They can also be taught to as many Pokemon as you want (whereas TMs can only be used once). However you can't get these moves off your Pokemon until later in the game, so don't go around teaching them to everyone. Make sure you've done everything on the S.S. Anne that you want to because it leaves as soon as you exit. When ready, exit the S.S. Anne and go
heal up.
Now that we have Cut we can cut down the small tree blocking our way into the Vermilion City Gym, so teach Cut to one of your Pokemon and press A on the tree. With one chop it should be down, so enter the gym. This is an Electric Gym and there is a puzzle you need to solve before you gain access. Let's take on the trainers first though to gain a bit of experience. Electric attacks have no effect on Ground Pokemon, so if you haven't already got one try reading ahead and catching a diglett and try your luck with that. There are three trainers, I'll start with the one closest to the door, then the next guy and finally the Gentleman:
Pikachu |
Level 23 |
| Money Earned: P1656 |
Now, onto the puzzle. On the door to the leader's room are two electric bars, all you have to do is turn both off. Sounds easy well sometimes you get lucky...Firstly heal up because leaving the gym resets the puzzle. In the gym there are 15 rubbish bins. A switch can be hidden inside a rubbish bin. Now, what you have to do is find two switches. The first switch is always placed in one random bin. The second switch is always in a bin next to the first switch. However, if you have unlocked the first switch, and get the second switch wrong, then the first switch resets and you have to find it again. Once you have found both switches, you can take on Lt. Surge.
Vermilion City Gym: Lt. Surge

Voltorb |
Level 21 |
Electric |
Pikachu |
Level 18 |
Electric |
Raichu |
Level 24 |
Electric |
Items Received: - TM34 Shock Wave - Thunder Badge - Fly can be used outside of battle |
First piece of advice, if you are really struggling you can skip this fight and come back later! Voltorb should be pretty easy to take down, and Pikachu is weaker than the Gentleman's outside, so Pikachu should also be easy to defeat. Ground Pokemon again will sweep pretty easy. Your biggest problem will be Raichu. The first few turns he uses Double Team, raising evasion. From then on a lot of your attacks will miss and it will be very difficult to take down. He will then use Quick Attacks and Shock Waves to finish you off. So ideally try to take Raichu down as quickly as possible. Surge will also use Super Potions if his Pokemon's health get too low. After beating him be sure to heal up as we still have a bit more to do around Vermilion City. When you are ready head east out of Vermilion onto Route 11.
