Not much to see here, don't bother wasting your time trying to find Caterpie and Weedle here, you can find them a lot easier in the forest. Head north through the Trainer House up into Viridian Forest.

Viridian Forest is the first maze like area in the game, but luckily it isn't very hard. For a map of Viridian Forest click here. The simple directions through the forest are: right, up, right, up, left, up, left, down, left, up, left, down, left, and up. If you want to skip the trainers and items simply follow this and read on to Pewter City. For complete coverage, start by heading left and then up. Here you will find a Pokeball. Now return to the start and take the right path. In the very bottom right hand corner you will find a Potion. Now head north. The first person you come across will challenge you to a battle.

You can now trade if you wish to do so. Before heading to the Gym you can look around town if you wish. Be sure to heal and stock up on items. If you started off with Charmander, I suggest catching a Caterpie then evolving it into Metapod at level 7 then Butterfree at level 10. Butterfree learns Confusion at level 10 and this move is perfect to use against the Pewter City Gym Leader, Brock, who has Rock type Pokemon. Once you are all prepared to take him on, head to the Gym. First you will have to fight a Trainer, then you can take on Brock.

Brock can be really easy, or very hard. If you chose Squirtle or Bulbasaur, and have trained it enough to know a water or grass attack, combined with a Butterfree which knows Confusion, you should be able to manage. If you chose Charmander, you have to level it up quite a bit in order for it to do much damage. Either that or train up a Butterfree to around level 16-18 and take a lot of Potions. I would probably combine the two. Mankey can also be used against him. When you beat him, he will give you TM39, the Boulder badge and the TM/HM case. This is new in FireRed/LeafGreen. It is simply a key item which stores all your TMs and HMs. To use a TM simply select the TM Case from the Key Items pocket.

Before leaving Pewter, make sure you have stocked up on Pokeballs and items, as there isn't access to a shop for a while. Also as you exit Pewter to the east, Professor Oak's Aide will give you a pair of running shoes which allow you to run by holding down the B button. Continue east to Route 3.
