My reasons for the choices...

<img src=http://images.google.com/images?q=tbn:1WXqMgLzsJ4J:cinder.retrogames.com/backgrounds/mspac1024.jpg width="120" height="90"></img>

Ms. Pac-Man: Starred in one of the most popular arcade games of all time. She was the first playable female character in video games as far as I know. Unfortunately for her, the Pac-Man series declined heavily in popularity as the 80's and 90's went on. Still, she deserves credit for being just as good as regular Pac-Man and being one of the first girls that players could use.

<img src=http://re2.mm-b1.yimg.com/image/556117880></img>

Princess Peach: Probably the most famous woman of Nintendo, she's been in the spotlight for a good 20 years now. Peach was also one of the first playable video gaming women due to her appearance in SMB2 and she was one of the cooler characters in that game. She's been a Mario spinoff-staple (Karts, Tennis, Golfs, and Parties) and she's proven her fighting skills in SSBM and the Mario RPG games. My personal favorite.

<img src=http://re2.mm-c1.yimg.com/image/1380870633 width="120" height="90"></img>

Samus Aran: Unlike the other choices, Samus is the true heroine of her series as opposed to starring in a previously established series. Although many people wouldn't know she was a woman at first glance, she combines beauty with deadly fighting skills and weaponry. Although she disappeared for a good portion of the 90's she's made a comeback following Super Smash Bros.

<img src=http://re2.mm-c1.yimg.com/image/985310167 width="120" height="90"></img>

Chun Li: As far as the fighting games arena goes, Chun Li is by far the most influential woman of the genre. She debuted in Street Fighter II and was the first playable woman in fighting games, prompting the creation of Mortal Kombat's Sonya Blade and only a zillion scandily-clad clones. Chun Li, however, was the original, and she's typically seen as the third most-popular character of her series.

<img src=http://re2.mm-b1.yimg.com/image/474826761 width="120" height="90"></img>

Lara Croft: I do not like this woman at all (but to be fair, Angelina Jolie is **** awesome) but of all contemporary women she's probably the most popular. Lara was probably the woman who started the movement for 'hot, sexy' women with big boobs featured in video games. At one time she was hailed as the most popular video game character in the world, and for as bad as the Tomb Raider games sucked, she was a fairly original character that could kick ass. Fortunately, people have started to look past Lara's 'good looks,' and Tomb Raider has fallen from sight.

Well, yeah, as much as I love Peach (she's easily #2) and Chun Li, I think Samus is by far the most important video gaming female. She paved the way for Lara Croft and Jill Valentine and she was kicking ass like a guy when Peach and Zelda were still damsels in distress. Speaking of Zelda, I do not find her influential whatsoever - she does absolutely nothing important in 90% of Zelda games, her most 'useful' role disguised as Sheik. Lame.

I think all of them are very influential to video games. I mean, there are so many. It's not just Leon (Resident Evil 4) or Mario (Who doesn't know where Mario's from?), I mean it's a lot. I am so glad that someone posted a thread like this.

It's hard to make a call here, but I voted for Chun Li, with Princess Peach a close second. That's because Chun Li paved the way for more female characters to be introduced into these "fighting" games. Princess Peach seemed to have less of an impact, even though she still remains a popular video game character even till today.

I had to vote Samus here, even though I'm not a Metriod fan. The whole "I just beat the game! OMG he's a girl?!?!?!" effect is priceless.

Peach.. though her role has changed, she's the first name that comes to mind when I think "save the girl!" which is hardly an influential role (at least the sort of influence you'd want).

Ms. Pac Man is another good one. It's basically the same game. And, who doesn't like how "Inky, Blinky, Pinky, and... Sue" sounds? Come on; that's gold.

Lara and Chun Li I group together. Paved the way for fighting and shooting chicks and, as Megatokyo puts it (allbeit about Dead or Alive), "bouce physics." Once again, not exactly the most admirable of influences, but still.

I think Samus had the best influence, cause she had a game of her own. Chun-Li etc all were in games where they had to share the spotlight with Ryu, Ken, Sagat and others.

Samus Aran's really cool. I think she was the first woman to not be that female "I'm helpless" stereotype.

Samus by far. No other character in the gaming universe, male or female, can beat her awesomeness. Plus she was in her own game.

Samus = Awesome

Celes from Final Fantasy VI is soooo cool lololol.

She taught me when you're stranded on an island alone, the best thing to do is jump off a cliff and try to bust your head open on the rocks below.

Lol, just kidding. (That was kind of funny though ;o)

Anyways, I'd say Celes, because she was born and raised to be an evil general, and to kill and take away inicent lives (sp?). But once she grew up and realized the war was stupid, she refused to take part in it any longer. She stood up against Kefka, and admitted she was a traitor. She even got chained to the wall, and got the crap beat out of her, and she took it like a women!

IMO, Celes is probably the strongest, most couragous Final Fantasy character ever.

I say Sonya Blade from the Mortal Kombat series.

I have every Mortal Kombat game and I have played it since the day MK was first released. From there on Sonya has been the baddest chick to hit the vedio screen.

2nd : Kitana

3rd: Jill Valintine

4th: Chun Li

Despite the obvious use of Lara Croft's image for marketing, I would have to say that it opened the window for females to continue the role of great video game protagonists. Women aren't just a third wheel anymore; the discernable weakling for the men to save out of lust or love. To me, Lara Croft wasn't just a body but a strong woman with power. I think this was instilled in many video game players. There is a rise in heroins, and I do believe Lara Croft had a large roll in this.

And I'm sorry, but I don't know why anyone calls Princess Toadstool "Peach." It had been drilled into my mind that she had no other name until I first saw this in Mario 64, and it bothered me from the start. It makes me think of peach fuzz on people's bodies. It seems like a subtle hint that she's a post-pubescent, hairless, medical oddity. I hate that name and refuse to call her it. I'm sticking to my NES/SNES roots.
