My Gold and Silver both save, but I feel like they've lasted long enough that it'll happen any day now.

I sliced it with a knife.
By the way, you don't "recharge" anything. You REPLACE a battery, it's much different.

okay, i have a question:
my crystal version no longer even goes to the main game. when i put it in my gbasp, the little rainbow gameboy logo flashes, and a black bar shows up; then nothing. is this related to the battery dying, or is it another issue entirely??

Rex, the black bar is just your game is not being able to be read.

you could try that, but when my crystal/emerald/ruby do this i just take it out, lightly blow into the GBASP/game and try again.

The guide worked for me with Gold, as well as my old Kirby game.
I was wondering if it was OK to copy the guide on http://www.neopets.com, since I've encountered so many people saying 'i thought my gold/silver was just special because it didn't save', and you aren't allowed to link off-site from neopets, or even mention another site. Could I please copy at least the text? I would put it on a pet page (neopets.com/~petname) and link people there instead. It would be a great service from psypoke to neopets, even if I can't really mention the site.
Edit: Awhile ago, I guess I must've bumped my Kirby game just right and I lost my save data, but it still saved after I restarted it. Same thing with Gold the other day. *sniff* I only had 8 badges... It was weir, though. I was fighting in Union Cave, and my Dodrio's PP went down to 9, then I fought outside the cave at the Ruins f Alph and its PP went back up to 11. I knew I'd lost the save data.

I have a similar problem here on red version, only it doesn't even show the copyright dates when i start the game up. It just goes to a black screen after the gameboy startup. The strange thing is that I put the game into Pokemon Stadium (1) and it reads the save file, but I can't use any Pokemon I have on the game and the Dodrio GB Tower won't load the game either. My other 2 red versions does the same thing as your crystal version, but I can't play it on a gameboy. Only on stadium. I can't perform trades on stadium either otherwise it deletes the game file. If I posted this in the wrong area, please tell me. One last thing, does yellow version take a different size battery?

A month late, sorry, I don't check this subforum very often...
Zdude, it sounds like an internal problem in your cartridge. I've had Gameboy games that just...die and act very similar to the problems you described. Sorry, but I don't think it can be saved.
Yellow Version does take a smaller battery for some reason, but it's no problem, you can still use a CR2025 battery in it. The voltage is the same and it still works fine. I usually try to cram an even larger battery, CR2032 in my cartridges, because they're easier to find in supermarkets.

I'm completely amazed by this little trick. Honestly I never thought I'd be able to get a working Crystal version because mine was burnt out and I didn't feel like buying online. I saw this thread and I have to admit it works to absolute perfection! The only thing you might have to get over is that if you're playing Crystal like me, the game itself is transparent and you can see the tape, which looks a little messy. Other than that it's like a brand new game. Much thanks to whoever posted this!

I think i have the same problems as the crystal-guys above here..
I have cleaned the cartridge with a q-tip but nothing else, in case of dirt on the contacts. But i do not have rubber alcohol to clean it with too.
The contacts seem to have a tiny little bit of yellow "dust" maybe but, i don't know for sure since i did not get it open and i don't have a metal polish for it :/

Rubbing alcohol is by no means hard to find; you could probably find it at the dollar store. If I had to guess i'd say your problem is being caused by internal damage and is unrepairable. Luckily eBay does exist and even if you got a cartridge that didn't save, you could use this guide to fix it.

That all depends on how careful you are replacing the battery. Yes, if you were rather careless in soldering, you could damge the cartridge beyond repair. But if you follow the procedure, while sweating bullets (:P) you should be just fine.
The removal and replacement hinge on being gentle, so remember that. But it should be quite easy, as there is a good guide for doing it right at the head of the topic. Good luck!

After committing a fatal error during the proccess of fixing my friend's Crystal version, I broke one of the battery tabs off of the game. Is there any way to reattach the tabs or otherwise fix the game without firing up the soldering gun??

I've been reading Nuzlockes and looking at Kanto and Johto Regions and decided to start playing my Blue and my Silver again. I have a few things to add. Instead of tweezers, use pliers. If your game as been through a few drops (like mine), you might have to use the knife to get the panels unstuck.

Hey everyone,
So I dug up my old GBC on a whim Monday morning (it's Thursday night as I'm posting this), and popped in my Pokémon Gold cart. Now, I had a feeling that the cartridge's batter might have run dry (meaning the time would not change). However, the time DOES change, albeit only when you play. For example: First time I turned it on, it was Tuesday 11:34, I played until the game said 11:35 I turn it off, come back to it roughly 5 minutes later, it still said 11:35. I played it until it read 11:38. I left it, then picked it back up earlier today, and checked the time. It still reads 11:38.
Now, this...bug, if you will, is unlike anything I've seen documented on the internet, so I put it to you. Had this been happening to your GSC cartridges, or was it the usual symptom of time not even running? My hypothesis is that the internal battery is running on fumes, and will stop changing the in-game time once the battery runs completely dry (meaning once the voltage supplied by the battery is insufficient to keep the clock running even when the gameboy is turned on).

Remember, there are HeartGold and SoulSilver games. Sure, it doesnt give the same nastalgia, but at least you can feel like your playing Gold and/or Silver. That's what I'm doing, since my dad cant soder well.

However, the main reason why I wanted to play it was the nostalgia factor. Oh, if anyone needs help or tips on soldering, I've got years of experience. And soldering to batteries isn't as bad as people make it out to be if you're safe and quick. Prolonged exposure to heat (read: more than 3 seconds) will screw up the battery/your game/anything the hot pointy tip touches.
