With my beloved team Chikorita, Larvitar, Snorlax, Lapras, Misdreavus, and Ho-Oh. They're at first stage because I really like to evolve my Pokémon, except for Snorlax.
Maybe Psyduck, Seel, Staryu, Mareep, Jynx, Togepi (to get a Togekiss), any Kanto starter, or Six Eevees (7 if I could).

To start that would be:
Skorupi
Riolu
Mudkip
Torchic
Bulbasaur
Murkrow
(pretty much busy on this on SoulSilver to start Platinum, though I'll have to satisfy with chimchar instead of torchic there I guess)

for my six, i would choose magikarp, budew, ponyta, gastly, pichu, and eevee

So water, fire, grass, poison, dragon, ground, ice, dark, steel, flying.

all their evolutions are awesome

Tough choice, and on any given day my answer can change. For now I'll go with these and I won't be cheap and load my team with strong Pokemon right from the get-go
