I've been wondering about the move "Lick." It's been a ghost-type move since Gen 1 but why?
Does anyone know if there's any association between ghosts and long tongues/licking in Japanese folklore or folklore in general?
The only thing I could find was a Japanese spirit called "Akaname" that licks up dirty bathtubs but that's it. :(

In the original season of the anime, lick was introduced by Haunter who did have an exceptionally long tongue. However, I think the move should be normal type. Either way I never use it so I am not too bothered by it.

Don't get me wrong, it's a useless move but I was investigating this because I'm developing a ghost character and wondered about this while coming up with some characteristics. Haunter had a long tongue but that was after the games had been made and they probably made it long to reinforce the fact that it's an attack. So...I don't know :\

Think of it this way.....
I cite the Movie Jurrassic park the lost world.
The T-rex licks the characters before attempting to EAT them, thus Terrifying them, paralysing them with fear.

the description talks about the horrid feeling of saliva rubbing all over yourself freaking you out. Fear is related to ghosts. It might also be a reference to boo, who has a large tongue.

try having someone lick you all over. See what happens.

Actually... no. Bad idea.
