I think it all dpends on what stats you like better. Altaria is more of the defensive stats, while Flygon leans more towards to the attack stats. There speed is probably about the same, but i think that Flygon's is a tad better. I have a Flygon in my pearl and it knows: Fly,Crunch,Dragon Claw, Earthquake and it is really good for level 76. I hope this helped you!

I have trained both, but only my Altaria is on lvl 100. I've been keeping my Flygon at 50 for a while (Battle Frontier) and I am thinking of moving him to 100. At the moment, though, I would have to say Altaria mostly because of it's defensive stat and decent speed.

If you want some more information, I would suggest looking here.

Flygon, definately. I've tried to train both, and I have a Lv 70 Flygon. I just got fed up with Altaria.

EDIT: OMG! the pokemon comparer is so cool, I had never seen it before!

Flygon!!! I think that Altaria takes to long to level up. Also, I think Flygon are more rare. At the place where Rayquaza is you can get Altaria wild.

Both are amazing, I've trained both. But when it comes down to just plain awesomeness, Flygon wins.

Altaria every time, if your going for a strong phsyical dragon go for slamance, dragonite, garchomp , altaria has a high special defence and a usefull ground imunity like flygon and has a better ability in natural cure, learns very good suportive moves like mist and safeguards, aswell as fairly strong attacking moves such as sky attack.... and theres always perish song to beat the foe that just wont go down

Altaria

1. It's easier to just evolve Swablu than having to level up Trapinch to 35 then Vibrava 10 more
2.Sky Attack (Flying) is better than Hyper Beam (Normal). Even though it's less powerful, normal is not very effective against all types except rock and steel. (It doesn't work at all on ghost)
3. Flygon has a lot of Ground moves which means that all of the pokemon with the ability Levitate won't be affected.

Biasness aside I would say Flygon he has an outstanding moveset and Learnset he's faster and he has a higher attack then the Defensive based Altaria

It has some decent attack considering that it is a Defense based Dragon Type & it is not "way way below other dragons"...that's a fact...

Anyway, Altaria does have Impressive stats, it's just that so does Flygon so it is more for personal preference...
Pick Flygon if you want a fast attacker that can take a hit or 2 more then the average fast attacker & pick Altaria if you want a defender who can still dish out exceptable damage is what I say, besides, Flygon's main advantage over Altaria Gen III is...

THIS.....IS.....HOENN!! In laymans terms, please pay closer attention to which forum you're posting in. Garchomp isn't in Gen III.

Really I would go with {altaria} but nothing is wrong with {flygon} you can do either as long as you don't plan on using them against Glacia

I would say it depends on the rest of your team. Is your team in need of a defensive pokemon or an attacking pokemon.
Altaria's base stats are HP-75 Atk-70 Def-90 Sp.Atk-70 Sp.Def-105 Spd-80.
Flygon's base stats are HP-80 Atk-100 Def-80 Sp.Atk-80 Sp.Def-80 Spd-100
So Flygon has better base speed and attacks. While Altaria has better defences. Both have $x weakness to Ice. Flygon is immune to Electric and Ground, Altaria is immune to just Ground. Flygon has a higher stat total as well, 520 to 490.
I would pick Flygon because it has better stats and more immunities, but Altaria would be my choice if I was looking for a hazer or a defensive pokemon.

In this case, Altaria. Although Dragonite and Salamence are the best physical dragons, Altaria also learns Perish Song at level 54 IIRC, and has the ability Natural Cure.

I would choose Flygon, because it serves better IMO. But if you're looking for a defensive pokemon, you can choose Altaria.

Whats with all the Altaria lovin'? I mean its an okay defensiive UU pokemon, but Flygon kicks some serious ass in comparison. Better stats, better typing, better moves etc. what's not to like?

I prefer {altaria} to {flygon} besides a ton of people have a {flygon} it's alot harder to find someone with an {altaria} Natural Cure is a best ability anyway
