I'm currently trying to breed a Timid Houndour with Flash Fire [gender doesn't matter as long as it has those.]

=THUS FAR=
I used a Ditto I had caught in the wild with a Timid nature, breeding with a Houndour with Bold nature and Early Riser [or wtvr] to breed a Timid Houndour.

Then, used that Houndour to obtain a Timid Houndour with Flash Fire. [both pokemon holding Everstones]

=MAIN CONCERN=
My friend told me that you always inherit stats from the Ditto and that, naturally, a Ditto's stats are really sucky. Thus, using a Ditto will always give you sucky stats. Or, IVs. [Being a noob to breeding, I use terms such as IVs sparingly since I haven't studied them in depth.]

I want to make sure whether or not it is okay to breed using a Ditto because of what she said.

=PLEASE TELL ME=
1. Should I only use parent pokemon that were caught in nature?
2. Have I done anything wrong so far with my breeding?

=KEEP IN MIND=
1. I'm not trying to breed for amazing or perfect IVs. I just want a pokemon with the right nature and respectable stats.
2. I'm a noob.
3. I'm probably disillusioned.

Additionally, I have actually successfully bred a Timid natured Houndour with Flash Fire.

But what I really want to know is whether or not it will end up having terrible stats because of the Ditto.

As far as I know from my own Pokemon breeding experience:

1) It's perfectly possible for a Pokemon to have grandchildren, so if you hatched a Pokemon from an Egg, you can still breed with it.
You can also train the parent Pokemon before breeding it, because this doesn't affect the Pokemon's offspring.

2) No, you haven't done anything wrong. :)

Ditto's stats may be awful, but this is due to its species.
If its baby is a Houndour, it will have Houndour's base stats. Its Ditto parent will not change that.
(In short, no Pokemon can have "hybrid" stats.)

IVs are not the same as base stats.
Base stats vary by species, and all Pokemon of the same species will have the same base stats.
IVs are numbers for each stat that vary with each individual Pokemon (species is irrelevant). They make the Pokemon gain extra points in stats, above the base stat. IVs can be inherited, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Like any Pokemon, Ditto can have great IVs.

If you want to find out more about IVs, you can look at Psypoke's IV guide - it's a great reference for learning about these hidden numbers. It may turn out that your Ditto has brilliant IVs...

Thank you very much! That was a great explanation - its been hard to deduct any of that sort of information from the guides I've been perusing.

One more important question I have:

Do you need AR to actually obtain the information about the IVs of your pokemon from one of the calculators?
I've heard something about hidden trainer code information or something like that which you need AR to figure out.
I'm opposed to using AR so I'm not sure if IV breeding is for me...

That's your Secret ID which is only used in randomly determining what your birth pokemon's specs are (IVs, Nature, Characteristic, Ability, shiny or not...)...& to figure out what your SID(secret ID) is, you don't need AR unless you don't have a legit random encountered Shiny to help you figure it out...Oh & you don't need AR to find out your IVs from one of the calculators...just might need to level it up to around Lv50 or higher to have better luck with an IV calculator...

Hmm. I haven't really researched it much, but supposing you have a shiny that you caught in the wild, what do you do to find your secret ID?

Okay, so *step one* is to obtain a shiny from the wild before I can even attempt to determine IVs and start the breeding.

Another thing, I was under the impression that if you level up a pokemon [thus, giving it EVs] you can no longer calculate IVs because the calculator can't take into account what pokemon you were fighting against.

Unless you want to factor that information in on your own, and subtract the EVs from your pokemon's stats, before entering the information into the calculator. That should work, right?

In the IV calculator, there are places to input your pokemon's EVs, IF you've kept track of them. Otherwise, yes, it does skew results.

There is an in-game way to view IVs and EVs with the use of the AR by using the following code. To use, open up Pokemon from the menu, then hold EITHER L or R as you navigate to the stats of your desired pokemon. L will view the EVs and R will view the IVs. You can also keep the button held down on the stats screen and switch pokemon to see their stats as well. Of course, the numbers you see on the viewer are not permanent, so if you just cancel out the pokemon's summary and stop holding L or R, the stat numbers will return to normal when you check them again :)

Tested in Soul Silver, but should work in Heart Gold as well! :)

Use the AR Code Editor on your computer found here: http://projects.sappharad.com/tools/ardseditor.html

along with your Action Replay software/connection cord in order to easily copy and paste this code onto your AR without having to type it all in.

Hope this helps! :)
