Never had that happen...
Yeah, try another battery, but make sure it's a different brand. I know for sure that Durecel works.

YES! There is finally a solution! I must try this now. Maybe I can get my Dad to surgically remove the battery. I'm not that great at the whole "careful" thing... Thanks!

Bump.
I've made a small update, but it's worth looking at.

How long do the new batteries last, do you think?

It depends on the brand. Try looking at the package for the lifetime expectancy.

I had a quick question/comment about batteries that had to be repaired:
Is it related to game play time? I know I had to replace my Silver's battery when it neared 500 hours. My Blue and Yellow are still working today although both have less than 100 hours and older than Silver. Crystal has about 130 hours. Anyone remember their hours before it had to be fixed?

My Crystal still works, and I'm about to face Red. :3 As for the battery... Are you talking about the battery in the system itself, or in the cartridge?

Ok, so the battery degrades after about 6 or 7 years, but is that since manufacture or since first use? There are some factory sealed copies still around, and I already fixed my silver. I'd like Gold but don't want to have to go through doing this again. Anyone?

How to make a special screw driver to open your game cartridges
I was getting sick and tired of unscrewing the little Nazi screws on the back of my gameboy games to change the battery in them. so I made a special screwdriver to make it a lot easier to unscrew them. all you need is a quarter inch wide Flathead screw driver, a Dremel (rotary tool), a metal cutting attachment, and a metal grinding attachment. First you need to grind the flathead of the screwdriver to the thickness of 4 pieces of paper. Now you need the cutting attachment to cut the center of the of the flathead to the width of the inner part of the screw, and use trial and error until it gets a good grip of the screw. now use the grinding attachment to grind the sides of the flat head to where it won't scrape the cartridge. Now it will take a lot of trial and error to get this to fit and work right.
P.S. i made that screwdriver in the first post.
P.S.S. if your retarded and hurt yourself doing this i'm not responsible

Great guide, I could probably fix my Gold version now. But I wouldn't risk destroying it!

Sorry about bringing this thread back.
What stops the battery in emerald from going out?

Sorry for the late reply,
the battery in Emerald shouldn't be going bad. RSE uses little batteries too, but just to keep track of time. The memory is stored in a flash chip and if your cartridge won't hold a save or it's telling you the battery is dead, I would question its authenticity or damage done to the cartridge.
By the way, it's fine to reply to this thread even if nobody has posted in a while, it's stickied for a reason. :)

Ooh thanks for the tip! My friend gave me his Gold version that didn't save for my birthday in August, 2008 (yeah, real old by then) and I want it to save soooo bad!
But, I have a question: If the file saved when the battery worked, and you haven't played it in like 10 years and you put in a new battery, will it still play on your saved file, or will it create a whole new file?

A. Nope. you will start fresh and new. The saved data that you had before can never be recovered. Sorry!

Question: Is there any way for me to transfer energy from one battery to the one in there if it still works? My friend has a Silver version, with a LOT of Lv 100 PkMn and I don't want her to lose it all. Thx.

No... sorry. You could tell her to trade to another game if possible. That's the only way I see.
