For an in-game team, remember that the most important thing is levels and type balance. Other than that, try choosing your favorite pokemon and using them throughout the game. You could also build a team around your starter, as your starter is usually one of your most important pokemon during the early game.

If that isn't a Pokemon-centered idea to you, I don't know what is.

Pick the Pokemon you catch early on in the game, and raise them up to high levels. (Except don't train stuff like Wurmple.) Try to concentrate on your starter, as its stats are marginally higher than others. Battle every trainer you see. If you do that, E4 will be a breeze for you.

Why don't you use some effort to create a team of your own, instead of relying totally on help from others? You'll get a greater sense of satisfaction that way. It isn't too hard; you can simply throw together a team of your favourite Pokemon (of each type, probably) to get a team of six.

You should have a balanced lvl. 60 team for end, And that's all you need. I always use a dragon, fire, water, electric, ground and psychic.
Allthough I prefer this easier style with 3 pokemon. Raichu (Electric), Vaporeon (Water, Much better than Blastoise) and Kadabra/Alakazam (Psychic).
You don't always have to use your starter. I never use my starter unless it's Charizard. Arcanine is just as good.

Early game pokemon pretty much sucks. Raticate is not good at all, replace it with Snorlax. Pidgeot has no use because Psychic types.
Beedrill is weak. Butterfree is just as poor (Someone stll use them because Silver wind but Nidoking learns Megahorn). Pikachu is good, pick it. It evolution Raichu has high speed and SpAtt.

Nidoran is also good. It evolution Nidoking, learns Earthquake by TM. It learns by level-up Megahorn and you can tutor to him Rock slide. Very good Physical sweeper. Clefairy and Jigglypuff sucks until you use them as Linbattle-tanks. Mt.moon has only poor pokemon.

Oddish and Bellsprout are Ok. But who needs Grasstype? Abra instead is in his final form very powerful pokemon. Catch it.
You don't need Digglet or Dugtrio because you have Nidoking. You can use the pokemon that you like. Dugtrio has Higher speed.

All pokemon in this routes where you go are useless for us. Get Eevee and Dratini. vaporeon and Dragonite are best of their type (Dragonite is only). Vaporeon is better than Blastoise. Use it. Dragonite's attack stat is so good that with large movepool.

Last pokemon is either Charizard or Arcanine. Both are very powerful. Use whatever you like, I used Charizard.

With this team it's easy to win.

I did say not to train stuff like Wurmple. Raticate evolves too early and falls along those lines.

Pidgeot has no use because Psychic types.
If you don't get a Psychic type, Pidgeot is an ideal choice.

Beedrill is weak. Butterfree is just as poor (Someone stll use them because Silver wind but Nidoking learns Megahorn).

I cannot refute these statements.

Oddish and Bellsprout are Ok. But who needs Grasstype? Abra instead is in his final form very powerful pokemon. Catch it.
Well if you don't have a Pikachu, what are you going to use against Gyarados? Gloom was great for me in Blue; I'd assume Weepinbell is even better.

You don't need Digglet or Dugtrio because you have Nidoking. You can use the pokemon that you like. Dugtrio has Higher speed.

Only problem there is the distinct lack of Fire-types...

With this team it's easy to win.

My team in Blue is Cloyster, Raichu, Ninetales (Arcanine is not wild in Blue), Vileplume, Dugtrio, and Alakazam. And it worked great.
LG team was Venusaur, Pidgeot, Dragonite, Zapdos, and two others that I forgot. I did raise a Golbat all the way up to Crobat before the E4 (or more specifically, it would have evolved had I obtained the Nat'l Dex).
And they worked great. I don't always use Psychic types, as Kadabra is pretty useless in its earlier levels.

For your starter, I think that Image a good starter choice, and so far I used four pokemon through. The four Pokemon that I used are as the followings:

Image level 100

Image level 100

Image level 100

Image level 100

I am not going to post any of my moves through, you want to use these teams, go ahead.

Smogon does come in handy for something in-game - it made a tier list.
The tier list was based on ease of catching, ease of levelling, moves, move availability (using no non-reusable tms), and typing. Keep in mind, no trading, as that changes everything (so, zam/champ/gengar/golem weren't counted).

I disagree with a few things, but it has a few things to look at...

Starters were all top tier - you get them early in the game, and none are really terrible.
Starmie was top tier - someone's reasoning that swayed this...

Quote:
I'd like to push Staryu for top tier again. It's available at level 24 range immediately after Snorlax, which isn't bad at all. If you don't care for minimize you can evolve it immediately, and Starmie's stats are downright excellent for that point in the game. Its 100 SpAtk/115 speed are reasonably comparable to Kadabra's 120 SpAtk/105 speed which most people agree is pretty good even unevolved, and it has significantly better defenses to use Recover. It does decently against the next two gyms and slaughters the last two. The high speed means it can outrun Lance's dragons even at a level disadvantage and hopefully OHKO them with Ice Beam, it'll fair better than things like Blastoise, Lapras, Vaporeon, etc. that'll probably get outsped by the Dragonites at least. Gary's Tyranitar is the case where it'll fare worse then them, but Thunderbolt at least means they don't get a free ride, either.

Starmie feels like a clearcut choice for best water in the second half of the game, especially the E4, and water's a pretty good type to have. It might well be the best for the whole game, depends on how much credit Squirtle gets for being available in the first half.

^^^I totally agree with that...

Bulbasaur
Charmander
Diglett
Drowzee
Dugtrio
Eevee-Vaporeon
Mankey
Meowth
NidoranF
NidoranM
Pidgey
Rattata
Sandshrew
Snorlax
Spearow
Squirtle
Staryu
Zapdos

Vaporeon works well for the water, but you can get Starmie, so not really.

Sandshrew's encountered early, and can use Dig in-game. (They all disgree with my call for cubone to be top, as it gets bonemerang, double-edge, and is an overall better pokemon. Also has false swipe). Diglett is also top, because you get it just outside of Surge. It has high level, high speed, high attack.

Rattatta has super-fang - taking off 50% of health.

Snorlax is very tanky, gets a good movepool, and has Yawn for getting the legends.

Pidgey = Spearow, because not for anything, dodrio is gotten too late in the game, and is too hard to get. In the giant scheme of things, spearow = pidgey.

Drowzee doesn't teleport away, need to be traded, or suck. My bone of contention was that Mr. Mime was gotten just after cut, and that abra only required a great ball. the fact that it was traded meant that it would have gained levels faster. Its also getting T-bolt, Calm Mind, and Psychic.

The nidos are all encountered early, get their final evos whenever you want after the seconds, and get a wide movepool with decent stats to boot.

Those that were in top, but moved down just because they were too weak - oddish and bellsprout. They were there because of the hikers that have pokemon with 2 and 4 weakness to grass moves.

Meowth is good becaus of Pay Day and Pickup. PErsian loses out on the pickup, but still...

My response to the whole thing if you have Leaf green...

Starmie
Natural cure ability
~Surf
~Thunderbolt (other waters)
~Ice beam (lance)
~recover/psychic.

Dugtrio/Marowak
Arena Trap for Duggy/Rock Head for Marowak
~Earthquake/Bonemerang
~TriAttack/False Swipe
~Filler/Double Edge
~Filler

Meowth
Pickup
~Pay day
~Shadow Ball
~Slash
~*Filler*

3 choices left. Mr.Mime, another water, your starter, a grass type, a flying type, others are at your fingertips.

Actually, no you don't. :P Banette is caught in Sapphire and Emerald; it just needs to be traded to FireRed or LeafGreen. Trading is great.

Not forgetting what some of the most powerful Pokemon in the game are...

Any starter you get will be lethal at some stage in the E4. Especially if they're Lv. 100, fully evolved.

Forget the Legendary Birds for an E4 (or a core six) team until after you've beaten them at least once. And remember the most powerful Pokemon in a generation of each type (entirely my opinion).

Bug: Not a very strong type, but Scyther is pretty powerful. Also, Parasect because of all the status-inducing moves.
Flying: Dragonite, all the way. With a big movepool and a lot of power (and its unique type hybrid) it's a great choice.
Normal: The best are hybrid-types, but you can make some of these really powerful. Names include Lickitung, Kangaskhan, Snorlax.
Dragon: Since I'm not doing repeats...Dragonair because it has good speed and high HP.
Ghost: I love Gengar for this one, and with its resistance to Normal attacks...
Poison: A really good one I can think of is Vileplume/Victreebel (which if you didn't get Bulbasaur is also a great Grass-type). Especially with all the status-inducers they can learn.
Electric: I'd have to go with Jolteon/Raichu. Raichu for its speed, and Jolteon for its Spd/Atk (after all, why else would Gary evolve it that way if he lost twice?...).
Grass: I'd go with Venusaur on this one.
Psychic: Alakazam. Nuff said. Except maybe Mew/two.
Fighting: Machamp is incredibly powerful, and can learn a lot of good moves.
Ground: Dugtrio or Marowak. Marowak has a great attack, and Dugtrio has Dig, which guarantees evasion for at least one attack.
Rock: Golem, which is basically the only good Rock Poke in Kanto besides Onix... Maybe Rhydon...
Fire: Fire-types are pretty powerful, no matter which one you ask. But I'd still say Charizard. Can learn a lot of HMs, is a dual-type, and has a big movebase with TMs.
Ice: Cloyster, because of its high Sp. Def, and Defense, with surprising Speed, and its dual-type.
Water: Have to go with Blastoise/Starmie, Blastoise because it's practically a tank, and Starmie for its dual-type.

And that's just some thoughts. Obviously, there's a lot of Pokemon, and an incredible amount of [definitely-finite-but-never-yet-counted] possibilities.

AEPMT :D :) :P

ImMax hasn't posted in this thread in close to three months, I think he would have decided what he's using for his team by now. *Locked* ImMax, if you need this reopened, PM me.
