As with all starters, they have 87.5% chance of being male. You keep retrying, and you will get a female one eventually.

if the starters were more felmale then male that would give a huge advantage expecially when breeding comes early in the game

The chances of getting a particular gender for any Pokemon is the same whether you get it as a gift or catch it in the wild. As for the starters, they have an 87.5% chance of being male, as mentioned above.
