Ditch Pikachu, get some other electric. I personally soloed them with Wigglytuff. (He was level 65, though.) You just need to get the high powered special moves (Psychic, Thunderbolt, Ice Beam, Flamethrower, Surf) and something like Shadow Ball or Rock Slide for Alakazam. Most good pokemon to be had before the E4 will learn these moves naturally. Lapras can take Thunderbolt, Surf, and Ice Beam. (Throw on Confuse Ray for special effects. ;o) Alakazam can learn the elemental punches through breeding with an Hitmonchan, which you will be able to get in the dojo. Also, Lapras will be given to you, so no hunting on that one as well. Charizard learns Flamethrower, and can be taught hard-hitting physical moves like Rock Slide, EQ, Aerial Ace, Metal Claw, Steel Wing, Brick Break, etc. That should cover both runs through the E4.
EDIT/Summary: All of my suggestions can be easily attainable before the E4. Lapras is free, Hitmonchan is free, you have an abra, you have a charmeleon, and you can breed.
EDITEDIT: Sorry, I forgot you couldn't breed. Alakazam isn't really necessary, though. You could tag along Kadabra just for the fighting types. He's great to have, though, after he has the elemental punches.

I agree. Pikachu's defense is low, so one strong attack and pikachu fainted. Better get Manectric (trade it from R/S/E), or Electrode.

He's training up for the Elite Four, he can't get Manectric, and Electrode is only lol-worthy at best, in my opinion. Best leave the Thunderbolting to those with higher special attack, methinks.

Yes, there is. I forgot the name, is it MetalCoat?
Protip: Get rid of Pikachu early and never regret it later. I don't mean to sound cold or anything, but there are SO many other options.

Iron is the item that boosts defence, carbos boosts speed.

I was wrong, it's Metal Powder, and it only helps Dittos. Your best hope is to raise him to a very high level, give him lots of Special Defense and Defense EVs, and to give him a Focus Band. You get it off of wild Machoke. I wouldn't give him your precious leftovers, I would save it for the one who will see the most action, Charizard and Lapras.

If you go with Alakazam, just be careful if you run into high levelled Gengars (I call mine the Alakazam Slayer) with Shadow Ball. Otherwise, Gengar is another option (you'll need to trade your Haunter though), but it's worth it.
