does the number of times u water berries affect the rate of growth? cuz it like after u water one berry about 7-8 times it will say, "there! all happy!" or do u have to juz continue moving from eg. left to right and water the berries once?

Berry growth works like this: After you water the berries once, the ground changes to a different color. If you want the plant to give out the maximum amount of berries it can give, I'd recommend watering it at it's different stages. (Seed, Sprout, Blooming, and finally Blossom) The actual number of times you water it dosen't mean a thing, as long as the soil is the darker color.
Tip: Using certain fertilizers can reduce the time it takes for it to change stages and makes it grow faster.

And the fertilizer you buy to the left of Hearthorn city from the lady in the Berry Master's house.

The mulch can speed up growth, but if you look, a lot of them have drawbacks when you buy them, such as making your berries need more water. It's kind of not worth it.
Just water them as much as you can remember to and your berries will flourish. It works for me- I average 5 berries from Sitrus trees, for example.

What exactly does gooey mulch (A plant fertilizer spread on soft soil. It ups the number of times new plants grow where mature plants withered.) do? I got 8 Rabuta Berries on one tree when I used it the first time, but less the second time

it means... when u plant a berry, and u dont pluck it, it withers but the berry drop onto the ground and it grow again... but only for a limited no. of times... the gooey mulch increase that number...

The number of berries has a random element to it - sometimes you will just get more than other times...

I remember in Ruby, an NPC mentioned that berries drop onto the ground and grow again if you don't pick them, but this simply didn't happen. They just die. Maybe my game was messed up.

I may be wrong but from what I understand, they grow back after falling only a certain number of times.
