Millions of people all over the world love football. Not the kind that has a 50 yard line, though. They love a game that we Americans call soccer (to differentiate it from -our- football. )
First of all, I will concede that soccer has become more popular here in the States. We have pro teams now and kids everywhere play it. So it's not like Americans don't know what soccer is - they do.
But what took so long? The rest of the world has been in love with soccer for decades. Why are pro teams only being formed recently?
I'd be interested to hear what other people's theories are about why Americans haven't (and still don't for the most part) become more interested in soccer. I have my own theory, which I'll espouse after a few other people have taken a crack at it.
Another interesting point - I watch a lot of ESPN ( while I'm trying to catch , lol ) and I have yet to see highlights, footage, or any other kind of coverage of regular season action from the professional soccer leagues here in the US. If they -have- aired it, I missed it.

Maybe because America sucks at Soccer. You want to see some real games, watch the Champions League.

Fulham are sh*te anyway. Let an american team play say, Liverpool, the Champions of Europe (and my fave team since I was 6!), or Chelsea, or Arsenal, then you'll know the truth. Keep to your cissy variation of football, even then, Rugby is better, as they don't wear pounds of protection, just a gum-shield. The only good player America has created is Tim Howard, the goalkeeper at Manchester United, and very good too.

I think that Americans don't care about soccer for a 100-year old reason...
Baseball.
Think about it. Baseball has been touted as "America's Pastime" for a few generations now. And it's pretty much the truth. Millions of Americans go to baseball games every year.
It is our love affair with baseball, coupled with national interest in our other three major sports leagues (Basketball, Hockey and our own brand of American football) which has kept us occupied quite well.
I think it's for this reason that we here in the States aren't too interested in soccer. We have more than enough exciting sports and great athletes on our plates already. Who needs soccer?
As for Americans "sucking" at soccer, I'd have to say, so what? Americans are good at the sports they care about; soccer isn't one of them.

Oh, it's not that bad. I may not be American, but I live in America and I like soccer. It's not like we've forgotten it or anything, it's just not on America's top list.

to tell the truth, americans dont suck at soccer, seeing as even though we from the U.S. call our selves "americans", people from south america and canada and mexico are also "americans"
(but americans does sound a bit better than U.S.A.ians, doesnt it)

You should be watch your mouth, Eswin. I have alot of friends in my school who play soccer, and they take pride in it. I would play soccer but I have an after school job and I'm in the school play, so I don't have the time for it.
As an American, I take pride in the fact that the U.S.A. partakes in so many sports. I have never said "This sport is pointless; why do they even play it?". Sure, I don't like some sports, but that's mostly because I'm a weak uber dork.
Just because there are other countries that are better at soccer than the U.S., it doesn't give you the right to say we Americans suck at soccer.
I'm not gonna hold this against you or have a grudge with you for saying that. But I am going to say this:
America may not have the best skills in every sport, but we do have the most willpower to help us emerge victorious.

I'm not a fan of soccer, and the only good American soccer players I knew in real life were half Cuban. Soccer is not American enough for me to consider it a true sport like basketball, hockey, baseball, and football. I show more interest in golf and tennis than soccer.

I'm a fan of soccer since I live in Korea.
The Americans are good at Football because they're fast, strong, and has long arms for throwing and catching.
Another thing... Baseball!!!
The Americans are the champions of the game.
Koreans sucks at baseballs.... well, they're okay at soccer.

Koreans okay at soccer? They got to the semi-finals of the World Cup! Lol. They are one of the best sides in Asia as well, alongside Japan. Park Ji Sung is hitting headlines for positive reasons at Manchester United, and so is Lee Young Pyo at Tottenham Hotspur.
That's more than an "okay" to me

Nah, I don't know that much more about Korean Soccer than you do. But I've heard of Seol Ki-Hyun (or Ki-Hyun Seol, lol) before. He's doing rather well at Wolves, I think. Lee Woon Jae, Lee San and Ahn Jung Hwan are some others I've heard of.

I love soccer. And yes I have noticed that not many ESPN channels have showed highlights of soccer. And I wish that us in America would call it futball too...not soccer!

For exactly the same reasons as the British (w00t we rule!) don't play American football. We have our own sports such as rugby. We don't enjoy watching pansies walking around in 10cm thick armour and Americans don't like watching obscenely over payed celebrities (referring to football... PROPER football... the one where you mainly use your FEET.)

Hmm im not sure about why it isnt as popular in America, but in Australia soccer didnt take off till we made the World Cup, then it exploded. Maybe its because they dont really have a team to support on a massive level.

I love soccer (football) but American teams suck. I say that European countries (Germany, Russia, Uk,Ireland)are the best there is.(except Brazil, not that i enjoy watching them.)

I like American Football more, but the gap was a lot closer than it was a couple years ago.
I think it really is a matter of location, because if I lived in Britain, France, Germany, or some other European country, I'd probably like Football more.
