I see these kind of things as meaningless n00b gimmicks. Pressing A or B or select or whatever has NO EFFECT on whether the ball will catch the Pokemon or not. If you actually believe it does, the real button you should be pressing on your DS is the Power button.

Pokemon is all data and databases. The game uses algorithms to decide the probability of a Pokemon breaking out of a ball versus the probability of it being caught successfully, depending on several variables such as the target's "capture rate" (a hidden number assigned to each Pokemon that determines its catching difficulty) and the remaining HP of the target, plus what kind of status conditions it's retaining, and lastly, what kind of balls are used. All the rest is down to the roll of the die, so to speak. It took me like 20 Dusk Balls to catch Azelf and only TWO to catch Uxie.

This kind of stuff bugs me to see people say "I press the A button and it WORKS!" Dude, you just got lucky. Anyone ever catch Abra with a normal Pokeball and without weakening it first? I have. It's all luck; you have a small chance of it working and a large chance of it not working, and it just so happened that you scored with the odds against you. It's not because you pressed the A button at the right time or held the Up button or looked at the screen from a certain angle. Don't go there.

Forgive my flippantness; my intent isn't to offend anyone, but I do have strong opinions on this subject so it comes off a little harsh to some of you. Just so we're all on the same level. =)

Yeah, I know all about the statistics and whatnot, but ever since RBY it has been a habit, and I guess I am really lucky because it does seem to work, though it isnt, it is just good fortune on my part.
But as for my method, it was easier on RSE and FRLG because I would do this. I would press and hold the B button and then I would hit left when it rolled left and right when it rolled right and whatnot. Then after the 3rd and final roll I would quickly hit B, A, then Start.
Basically the same thing in DP too.

Not to argue, but have you never not even once in RBY(if you played them when they first come out) hold a button just because someone on the Internet said it worked?

Diamond is my AR file, so all pokes from it are hacked unless said otherwise.

I think i have the more odd of the catching rituals....
I scream,"Stay in!!!" into the mic after the pokeball stops bouncing and starts rolling

I hold down while the pokemon is sucked up, then tap the direction that it shakes in, then hold down when the 'click' happens... if it gets that far :P

Well, thanks for your tolerance of my small outburst, at least...

But to me it's more than a game. I hope to actually make money off of official tournaments someday. =)

Back to the subject, though, as long as we're talking about habits... When the ball catches the sprite on the screen, I point my stylus at it and imagine a beam of electricity shooting out of the stylus and trapping the ball in a cage of electricity. Then I imagine myself standing in the middle of a grass/cavern/whatever, in front of a violently shaking Pokeball, shooting lightning out of my hands to keep it locked. The whole experience lasts 10 minutes, but in reality only a few seconds have gone by before the capture. If the Pokemon should break out, in the "grassy field/etc.", I'm thrown off my feet by an explosion directly in front of me. Sometimes I actually feel pain.

I, uh...

...watch the screen, as I know no interactions I have with the machine will work at that point, so why bother?

Good luck with that buddy.

ALthough, as a more general statement, I've actually been interested in all of the responses/tricks we've gotten on this thread. I think it shows that there is no "real" trick to catching Pokémon, otherwise instead of all of the varying answers (up + B, down + A, rotate with the Pokéball holding 'Select' or whathave you), wouldn't we be getting one general answer? In theory, anyway...
If there was one trick that worked, more people would be replying with that one, than all of the various responses we've gotten, right?

Food for thought at any rate....

I've heard that yelling "gotcha!" into the mic right when the ball hits the pokemon increases catch rate. I have no idea if that works or if it's just a hoax, but I do that, y'know, only when I'm alone because I don't want to look silly >__>

I know that none of these things really work, but I feel weird just sitting there. I holdA as soon as the ball opens, and say "gotcha" into the mic when the ball turns yellow... just stupid theories I heard over the internet, but I usually get the Pokemon when I do it, so I just never stopped.

Yeah, that's about how I am. I feel like I should be doing something while the ball is doing its thing. And then, if it doesn't work I think to myself, "Maybe it does work and I just didn't do it right." and then when it does catch them I think, "Hmmm, maybe it does work, I'll just keep doing it just in case..."

I also hold down a & b while the ball is shaking, I've done that since RBY.

I stare at my DS intimidatingly, daring it to disobey me. It works.

Well, I just sit and watch it...but the rumors about the holding the A button or whatever aren't true.

What I do is similar to the old games Up+A when the ball is in midair and when the ball opens up, press A+B. Most of the time it works but....

Depends on how many times I attempt to capture...

1st Try: Do nothing
2nd Try: Hold A
3rd Try: Hold A+B
4th Try: Yell and scream
5th Try: Rip up newspaper

Sit and wait. I'd look a lttle dumb sitting on a bus rapping on a button and grunting in frustration.
