Although I prefer Cyndaquil, it has been my personal experience that Totodile is the best stat wise. His evolutions are very powerful, and have the Defense stats to back it up.

If want Sp. Attack and Speed, go for Cyndi.
If you want HP and Attack, go for Toti.
If you want defense, go for Chikky.
It's entirely up to you, but Cyndiquil is the best.

Chikorita ftw. Its stats are excellent, it has good moves, it can take a hit, and it was so easy to beat the game with it even though it's supposed to be the hardest to go with. It's certainly the best defense wise, and it's about tied with Feraligatr sp attack wise.

There is no best starter. What matters is how you use them. Meganium has good defensive stats and has synthesis to last long. Feraligatr has a good movepool and is the most balanced of the three. And Typhlosion is the best choice for the players who like offensive Pokemon. (As in; Deals heavy damage.)
But Feraligatr is definatly the most standard. But I really think you should pick the starter that you like the most.

Agreed. is the best stat-wise; or at least this is what I have noticed. Even if he isn't the best in stats, you should pick him anyways since he can learn a large variety of moves and his stats are good and balanced.

In Silver and Gold, go with Cyndaquil. The opponent is Feraligatr, and mareep is common. Mareep is the only decent electic. As for gyms, owns in azalea, olivine, and mahogany.
Totodile and its evolutions have great stats that are badly placed. Does more damage with curse, screech, rock slide and eq than surf and ice punch.

PEANUTLOVER WROTE:
"Does more damage with curse, screech, rock slide and eq than surf and ice punch."
I disagree with that a bit. Yes, it is true that is a great moveset with two powerful attacks and a couple of useful defense moves, but the best moveset I've taught a Feraligatr included Surf, Ice Punch, Slash, and Bite. You get STAB with Surf, high critical hit ratio with Slash, a possible flinch with Bite, and the offchance that your opponent will freeze solid with Ice Punch. If those attacks are used well, then your Feraligatr will be able to do MUCH more damage than it would with the other moveset.
Not that your idea wasn't a great one or anything, I'm simply speaking from personal experience.

http://psypokes.com/dex/pokedex.php?id=160&view=stats has feraligatr's statts.
A better moveset involves Crystal influence and breeding. Breed w/ Larvitar for crunch, trade to crystal, and teach totodile or its evolutions ice beam from crystaal.

Meh, since in these generations you don't need split EVs, I'd go with these:
@ Lefties
Curse
Rock Slide
EQ
Surf / Return / Slash (For STAB, but Return or Slash are good, too.)
@ Lefties
Synthesis
EQ / Body Slam
Sunny Day
Solarbeam
(If you have any better ideas than EQ, Don't hesitate to inform me, but EQ kills Fire types... If you last long enough to use it, that is...)
@ Lefties
Sunny Day
Flamethrower
Thunder Punch
EQ / Rest
Personally I prefer Typhy or Meganium, but I still think that Feraligatr can be the most powerful.
::EDIT:: I was thinking of adding EQ to Typhy, but wasen't really sure. (I'm really bad at creating movesets for this generation.) Thanks.

My experience shows me that:
Cyndaquil sucks. Even though its supposed to be best statwise (even though you guys are saying that totodile and evos are), it has the worst movepool I have ever seen.
Meganium is the best. It has a good movepool and moveset capabilities. My Meganium has:
Razor Leaf
Earthquake
Body Slam
Hyper Beam
And it owns everything in sight!
Totodile is good, nearly as good as Meganium. Nearly.
But really, its up to the personality and style of the player.

well for me they are all good, but these are what they are all good at:
is good for SP.attack and speed, this pokemon is usaly used by lesser experienced player.
is good for people who have completed the game a couple of times and is a good alrounder at it's final evolutionary stage.
is for the more experienced player and has good defence, s.p defence and attack and takes more concentration than the others to raise in higher lvls.
hope this helps

i believe he is the best, well like everyone else says about him,he is great,i would teach my feraligatr moves like icy wind or hydro pump, but here is a great feraligatr(i am going to get this gatr soon)
feraligatr
item:mystic water(if not then what ever u like)
surf
ice beam
slash(is i think one of the better melee moves)
acient power(for it can power up this gator to the stats of the others)
ok the thing is,feraligatr can beat the other starters like blastoise can,and the same with swampert.
for they all can learn ice moves to kill grass and water or sometimes rock or ground for the fire(charazard is a flying but can die easy with a good surf.)
so this is just my opinion(and now watch all of the cyndiquil lovers and chickorita loves hate me)

ya know there is a way to get all of them w/o gameshark.
1. save in elm's lab before picking starter. DO NOT SAVE AFTER PICKING STARTER !!!
2. pick starter and play game until elm's aid gives you pokeballs. (after beating & naming your rival)
3. catch a pkmn (it dont matter which one)
4. deposit starter in PC
5. change box
6. when changing box, turn game off when game says "SAVING... DONT TURN OFF THE POWER" (turn off around "POWER")
7. turn game back on and load file (u should be in lab before u pick starter)
8. repeat steps 2-7 with another starter.
9.pick third starter (the other two should be in the PC) DO NOT SAVE BEFORE THIRD STARTER !!!
note: you will not receive pokedex data for first two starters' basic forms. your rival will pick the starter strong against your third starter

I kinda disagree with your moveset. a more effective moveset would be:
surf/hydro pump
ice beam/blizzard
earthquake
return/hyper beam/rest
has low spcl def so most grass and electric moves can 1 hit KO it. thats where blizzard and eathquake come in. remember, since is a water type, hydro pump's power is boosted by 50%. curse is not very useful because has no physical weaknesses and already has relatively high atk and def.

I believe Cyntiquil is the best, only cause there are so little fire types, and aswell, he will help you with the 7th gym leader, but the game is more fun with Meganiuem, because it is harder because of it's 4 weakness
