Yeah, I already get annoyed when something confuses me.... But I get even more annoyed when my fully filled green bar goes all the way to near red after it hurts itself ONCE!!! I am always WTF everytime that happens.
And other times, it does close to nothing.
So I'm just wondering, how do you know what damage your Pkmn are going to do for itself, or is that number just randomised?

I know it's based on your atk, but not much else. The pokemon that did a bunch of damage to itself probably had an attack boost/its defense lowered. When it does nothing, it probably has its attack lowered/its defense raised.
Hope that helps.

I don't know the exact mathematics behind Confusion, but it is based on your Attack stat as well as your Defense stat. If you are up against a Pokemon that can make you confused, you would have to KO it fast, or avoid using Attack-boosting moves like Swords Dance.
The move Swagger makes use of Confusion's properties by raising the opponent's Attack by a fair bit, while making the foe Confused. Psych Up can be thrown into this strategy, to copy the Attack changes without gaining the Confusion.

No, you're right. It does, so Flatter is pretty pointless in my eyes unless you have a Spec. Sweeper that needs it.

Confusion is a double-edged sword. Swagger, Pcych-Up, and Screech are great when you can use them. (Wild pokemon using strategies yayaya.) It wouldn't be fair if whoever made the game made it so only you can confuse the opponant, would it? Swagger an enemy and watch their health go down.
<Edit> Golbat is not stupid.
Yay for my second post in three minutes. </Edit>

I always thought that damage to yourself as a resut of confusion was
C+X
Where C=a set percent of your health and X=attack-defense if attack is greater than defense.
