All nintendo fans that could afford it rushed to the nearest store to pick up the Nintendo Gameboy SP. It started at $99.99 at most stores, maybe different for your currency. But a few months later they came out with a new SP, now with a brighter screen light.

After a few months, it's most likely that if you were going to buy the SP, you bought it. (Not true in some cases however). Now this new SP with this new screen is roughly $79.99 USD. Was this bad for Nintendo's sake? How much money did they get out of it?

Personally, I don't think many people are going to buy another SP because the screen is brighter. So I'm not sure if this was good for Nintendo. But then again, it may not matter. Especially if they were going to keep producing the SP for quite some time. But how long? The Nintendo DS and Gameboy Micro are not out, so who's really going to buy the SP?

I want to hear your thoughts. Do you think is was good, bad, and neutral for Nintendo to come out with this new Gameboy.

I'm leaning towards neutral, but may change to bad. I don't see the point, but it probably doesn't bring Nintendo's sales down at all.

Just thought I should ask however. :)

I think it's mainly for the holidays.

If I didn't already have a GBA SP, I would probably consider it.

First of all, my SP's L and R buttons barely work. For a lot of games, they're not really necessary, but for the ones that they're needed, it's really annoying.

After playing the DS, the SP's light seems really dark, and it's kind of cool that they're brightening it.

Also, the DS is not compatible with multiplayer GBA games.

I don't have any games for DS yet, so I really just use it because my SP doesn't work too well. (I also have a standard GBA, but the directional buttons are really unresponsive, so that's even worse than using my SP)

This is minor, but while the DS is backwards-compatible, there are reports of glitches on certain games. Technically, the DS only emulates GBA games. Therefore, many of the glitches (so I've heard) are the same ones you find if you play the game on a GBA emulator like VisualBoyAdvance! For the most part, these glitches are minor annoyances, but here are a couple I've experienced on my DS:

Mega Man Battle Network 4: Blue Moon- Before a cutscene in WoodMan's scenario, the screen goes black for a few seconds. (mainly to make a transition between where you were and the cutscene) Strangely enough, you can still control the game at this part (which you normally can't do during cutscenes), and if you somehow navigate to the "Save" command, it screws up your file. (The game's fine if you cut it off instead of saving though) On both DS and the VBA ROM, the screen never goes back, so you can't progress further in the game. This is probably the worst one I've experienced; you pretty much just have to beat that part of the game on a Game Boy Advance. If you don't have a GBA or a Game Boy Player, I guess you'd just either have to hope you don't get WoodMan's scenario (the scenarios in the game are selected randomly) or beat it on a friend's GBA then transfer back.

Mega Man Battle Network 4 (both versions): Certain chips (mainly in the Red Sun version) freeze the game for about 10 seconds when you use them. Everything seems fine after that. Examples are GutsMan and GutsMan SP.

I think it's mainly a holiday marketing thing, like when they release a new color skin. Personaly, I will never buy a SP; I perfer the configuration on the old GBA. Although the retro looking SP is kinda cool.

No. He means the Game Boy SP, not Micro, SP. Got that? The SP, not the Micro, but the new SP has come out, it has a brighter light, that's the only difference. It is worth $79.99. Ok? Once again, the SP. NOT Micro, SP.

This new screen just came out or came out a few months after the other original SP? If it just came out, what's wrong with the older backlight? I could play my SP in a closet with a blanket over my head on the dark side of the moon without any problems. Who needs a bighter screen?

If you cant see, try not playing under your covers and get out into the light.
I think that Nintendo's smorgasboard of systems is really annoying. I love the Zelda series, and with EACH NEW GAME coming out on a different console, well....

DatVu was saying the old screen was bright enough, that the new screen isn't really needed.

You're like, the 20th person I've talked to that said your L and R buttons hardly work. :/ I have to press mine really hard for them to work. Anyways, there is a new GBA SP? lol. I am not buying one. :P

The old SP's "backlight" wasn't really a backlight at all. This new one is. Also, it's not "a few months later." I've had my SP for.. well, since launch. Seems like about 2 years now. The copyright on the back says 2002. So, 3 going on 4 years I guess.

If you haven't realized this about Nintendo now, they make their money by remaking things. The DS came out, and everyone bought one. Like 2 months later, "ZOMG BLUE DS!" I didn't really like the silver, I knew that other colors were coming, but I got the silver anyway. Some people would buy both. Others, like my friends, would get the warantee on the DS, break it, and trade it in for the new color.

But, I have no need for the new SP. I have my DS. *pokes*
