Read between the lines a little, guys. It's in case your opponent uses Pluck/Thief. Staravia uses Pluck, ooh, now I can OHKO it with EQ.

Though Iron Ball/Fling is a good idea I was planning for a particular pokemon. :P

Seriously THANK YOU TASER, omg think about it. If you use a move that either witches your items with each other(persian know its) or if your opponent decided to take yours they loose speed, you gain speed, and they become vunerable to EQ

Iron Ball combined with Trick was the only way I could defeat that stupid Bronzong in the Elite Four without wasting another couple of hours training my team. I was kinda tense about it too, because I only had one available and didn't want to replay through that Psychic team over and over again until I won.

Tropius holding one won't get a double weakness to ice, a weakness to Rock, and SunnyDay can counter the Speed problem. Or use Trick Room.

A good use for it would be to give it to a pokémon like Lopunny with Klutz. It'll hold the Iron Ball, but it's effects won't be in play. Then use a move like Switcheroo. If you get a not so great item, like a Choice Band, you still won't use it, but the other pokémon is stuck with a sucky ball.

Or you can use it with Fling for a base power of 130.

^How did you find out the base power for that? Is there any chance you have a key for BD for items using Fling?

I thought it and Lagging Tail would be use to someone who knew Gyro Ball.

Bronzong knows Gyro Ball, so you could get one to hold Lagging Tail.

I believe Iron Balls remove a Flying-type's weakness AND it's resistances (but only those of the actual flying type, of which no Pokemon exists. They're all multi-types).

Anyone care to try a Thief/Fling combo?

No, it can be more useful than only with fling. He can use it for fling ammo, which is very powerful, or you can give it to a pokemon that knows trick or other moves like that, excanging the iron ball with an opponent and getting their hold item, but it works also if the opponent isn;t holding anything, so iron ball is a multi-propose item.

It could also power up gryo ball potentially.

And some pokemon can hold it without slowing down.

Problem is, that once you fling the iron ball at the enemy, not only can you not use fling for the rest of the battle(since the pokemon is no longer holding an item), but after the fight the thrown item disappears, making Fling an interesting but terrible move.

The trick/switcheroo strategy is probably the best, but once again it suffers from the fact that after the battle, the iron ball is still on the opponent while you've got their item. If you want to use any of these stategies more than once, you have to make sure you trick/switcheroo the iron ball back onto your own pokemon before the battle ends.

Ironball and lagging tail can be used in conjunction with gyroball for greater damage, but gyroballs damage is pretty poor regardless how slow you are. Golem, for example, seems like a good candidate for the iron/gyro combo, but since steel is only super effective against two types(ice and rock) and since Gyroball has no other effects other than damage, it would make much more sense to use a rock attack which would not only recieve STAB damage, but is super effective against more types(ice, flying, fire, bug). An earthquake could take care of any rock type enemies.

The trick room strategy is also faulty. If you put the iron ball on your pokemon just so they're slow enough to go first after you use trick room, then that would mean they were already faster than the enemy to begin with, making the iron ball/trickroom combo completely pointless.

while Iron ball sparks a great deal of brainstorming among players (always a good thing), its' uses are mostly one-shot tactics that have limited effect on any battle.

I'm fairly certain in a trainer battle, or one over Wifi, you won't lose items used up in battle (other than berries that are eaten ingame). Yes, they'll be gone after their used, but they'll be back when the battle is over.

I could be wrong. I haven't tested it myself yet.

no pixel you are right, thats why the switcheroo strat with the scarf that makes it so you have to keep using your last move is so goooooood. and fling can only be used once on wi fi but when you win/losr the item is back

It is good gor Fling. It will do the most damage. I also think that it will do good for Gyro Ball, seeing how the slower the pokemon is the more damage is done.

Fling, in my opinion, is its only useful purpose. Even if you were to Switcheroo, the Spped difference usually not enough to make a difference. Only Switcheroo if it makes an opponent a non-flying type.

Yes, items do return (making focus sash on a high power shedinja great(ish) for WiFI or BR)

Though i hate them, there are a few good things:
Not only for gyro ball and trick room- Good for payback and similar moves that must go second to attack.

Good defensive tool (against thief / covet) (why worry about being slowed down if you are already the slowest.

And, if it makes you slow... no worries about using non-ghost curse (the moves drawback is slowing you down)

On hte flipside if you do want to give it away, you could arm your pokemon with moves such as Quick attack, extreme speed aquajet. etc. even if your holder dies, the opponent is still slower, and you can then use slower pokemon with the chance of going first. (within reason)

also keep in mind you you give it to. don't switch it with mantine, cuz he's still resistant to and super effective against ground. try golbat, charrizard, or bronzong (check for levitation first)

One last idea... use it to counter magnet rise.

I think that the Iron Ball has no purpose. I mean, what's the purpose of something that removes the immunity of Flying types? The immunity plays a big part in the usefulness of Flying types. Also, it slows down a Pokémon. It might have a useful side to be slower than the foe (certain moves) but I wouldn't have my Pokémon to be slow.

My point is, that the Iron Ball is pretty much useless. I guess Fling with the Iron Ball does have 130 power, but I prefer different moves rather than Fling.
