It's down to whether defense or special defense is higher. I've been intending to post this for a while but kept forgetting and consequentially I've forgotten which is which but I believe it was higher special defense evolves to cascoon. : D

No, it is not random. However, do you have certain proof that it is based on Def/SpD? I thought it was based on a hidden number. lolstop describes it as a "personality value".

I'm not very good about knowing much about DVs and IVs, but I thought that it was based off one of those.

I would really like to know how to do it without being "random", though...

Well, I can't stand cascoons, so I was checking stats on each wurmple as it tried to evolve and the pattern was Defense and special defense. It may well be IVs and DVs but somehow I doubt this as giving my wurmple lots of Iron changed what it evolved to when I saved before hand. And I think Iron changes EVs, no?

previous information implied that it was based on a random hidden unchangeable value.

Iron does indeed change EVs (and forces recalculation of stats).

I'll do an trial run later tonight.

It IS random, like Sion9 said before, it's personality value. Personality Value is a 32-bit string of binary data that cannot be altered. It is used to determined Wurmple's evolution, shinyness, Spinda's Spots, gender, Unown form (well GBA games only, but this was posted in Hoenn Region anyway), Ability and Nature. Although personality value evolution is not exactly 'random', because it is based off that string of binary, the generation of a Personality Value (from the Pseudo-Random Number Generator [PRNG]) is pretty much random.

I was unable to change what the same Wurmple evolved to by changing the stats through EVs. Did you use two different Wurmples?

It sounded to me like he evolved the same one, then soft reset, used Iron, and ended up differently. But I could be wrong...

The information on most sites describe it as 'personality value', so even if it was Def/SpDef, I think that ClaouFaeng used two different Wurmple.

Also, ClaouFaeng, what made you think it was Def/SpDef? Generally, I think this should be tested on 10 or so different Wurmple, instead of one or two.

If he's hypothesizing that the final Def/SpD stat controlled the evolution, then changing the Def/SpD stats one Wurmple would be enough to determine whether it's correct.

Well, Hyperbole has a point. If you just raise the stat, and evolve it to what you want; then you wouldn't keep experimenting to get the other (if you wanted it). And if you did that, some with vitamins, others without; that's where the actual testing comes in. And by checking each time, control group, experimental group or otherwise; 10 would be more sufficient to ensure that the number is not actually in the stats ("random" as before thought).

Post subject:  Re: Wurmple's evolution is not random

That certainly would be one way to test it, but wouldn't resetting and checking one Wurmple (for changing stats affecting evolution) be a more complete and easier way to check it?

It seems that getting ten or more Wurmples, splitting them into groups, then experimenting would both take more effort, in having to deal with more Wurmples, and also fail to provide a 100% conclusion.

It all depends on how you raise them. If you think of every condition, using more testers will give you more complete results. Think of psychological studies, it's the same way.

But I'd rather do the 10, no matter how long it takes, because the results would be more definitive (in my opinion) than just soft resetting and checking a different stat...

Post subject:  Re: Wurmple's evolution is not random

Wurmple's evolution is not based on gender, stats, time of day, location of capture, color of the sky, the female character's ovulation cycle, or anything other than its personality value, which is a hidden and random value determined when you encounter Wurmple and that can't be influenced by the player in any way. So, for all intents and purposes, Wurmple's evolution is random, and that's why we chose to say "Random" on the Psydex instead of including a bunch of nerdology that would go over the heads of casual players.

With that said, we do state this on the site.
