Recently I have decided to redo my Mamoswine. I have been trying to get one with decent IV's. I got one that has average IV's of 22. I have been trying to get better of course, but so far this is my best one. So, I was curious of those other IV trainers to know when you usually stop IV training.

After reading the IV breeding guide on Smogon, I've been fool enough to breed for 31s in at least two stats per critter. Right now, I'm going for a Vaporeon with 31/x/31/25+/31/x, which is a daunting task to be sure. I went for 20+/x/31/31/31/x on my Venusaur, and it was quite the chain.

No less than 30 on important stats for tanks, 31 for sweepers. Other stats HAVE to be at least 20.

In sweepers, I go for 31 in Speed, 28+ in the attacking stat(s), and about 15+ in the defences/HP
For tanks/sponges/walls/etc., its 30-31 in HP and BOTH defences, with 20+ in the attacking stat it will use, and any speed, unless its something like a Bronzong where a low speed is ideal (Gyro Ball).
Anything else, I usually just concentrate on the main stats that the EVs will go into

Looks like I'm making a come back.
You people expect perfection I'm never that lucky to get such STAT's on any of my pokemon and I just go for 25+ on the nescessary STAT's.

Well, i breed them until i got 31 in all important stats...
In My infernape i got 31 in both attacks and speed...the rest is below 20...
In my Blissey she got 31 in Hp and Defense and more than 20 in S.Def...
For example...
I chained and catched lots of dittos with that purpose...some have awesome stats...
but i use them mostly to get the nature.

The only stats that people should go out of their way to get perfect IVs for are HP and Speed and, even then, they're on a case by case basis. A sweeper and/or fast, fragile Pokemon should always have 31 in Speed because they might not be able to afford the one hit that they'll automatically take if they're facing a Pokemon with the same base Speed (but with a perfect Speed IV). Perfect HP IVs only matter if your Pokemon has base 100 HP and you want to use Substitute... most notably Azumarill or any of the cute all-base 100 legendaries like Jirachi.
Really, having 26-30 IVs in Attack, Special Attack, Defense or Special Defense, as well as in HP for most Pokemon or Speed for some Pokemon, is not going to change anything except maybe your Hidden Power type. The difference between those IVs and the much more painful-to-acquire 31 IV is negligible; a 1-2% difference at very best. So if I can get all important stats to land in the 25-31 range (31 being vital in two cases I noted above), I'll keep the Pokemon.

Well, the upside of 31-breeding (at least for those of us who have trouble with D/P cloning) is that there are several critters along the way which have 31s in a stat or two; these can be traded or handed off to friends. Saves someone else a lot of trouble.

I don't breed my Pokemon at all save to get egg moves (e.g. a Thunderpunch on Infernape).
Usually I prefer it if the IVs in the stats it needs (for sweepers, Atk/SA and Speed, for tanks, Def/SD) to be 25 or more. If I don't get those results after EV training, I usually don't use it in my team, and put a "raise another one" memo on my to-do list.
A lot of this relies on luck, but I have had a lot of good luck. Dragonite has 25+ IVs in every stat, save Speed which is 8. Although that's not desirable, a 25+ on all his others is nothing to sneeze at, so he's a high chance for a keeper. Metagross had a 31 Atk IV, had an Adamant nature, and 252 EVs in Atk, so he's a definite keeper too.
On the other hand, Infernape has an Atk IV of 2-8, and Def of 31. It is the wrong way round, but I use him solely because I don't have another feasible option to replace him with. Gengar has a SA IV of 4 and SD of 31, and I don't use him, period. Both his IVs and moveset are messed up. Alakazam has only mediocre IVs in his stats (12-ish on all, with a 27 SD), but I do use him, as he's not a complete failure. I would have hoped for better though.
In a nutshell, I depend on luck. I don't tend to breed for IVs, because not only do I not know fully how to go about it, it would try my patience.

Generally I seem to have miserable luck with IV's. I've got breeding chains of single pokemon taking up tons of box space, and the best I seem to generally have the patience or luck to obtain are a couple 30-31's and then averages around 18-22. Never had an absolutely perfect pokemon, and can't even fathom the patience it much take.

For me, if it's a Sweeper, its DVs for Speed MUST be 31, its Atk or Sp. Atk must be at least over 25, for the Def & Sp. Def stats anything above 17 would do for me. For a tanker, I usually take only those whoose Def and Sp. Def and Hp are above 25. Anyway, the highest DVs that I could breed for besides my Ditto was 3 Perfect IVs and 3 above 20 DVs.

I want 31 or 30 in the most important stats. I want 20+ in the other stats that matter. I don't care for stats that don't matter.
