Thats just your pokedex rating, it changes every ten pokemon you catch I think. How many pokemon do you have? Cause Ive never got that one, right now hes telling me not only to catch pokemon but to evolve them too

Confirming - yes, it changes with every ten additions to the Pokedex, until finally the Professor says "Congratulations, your Pokedex is complete!".

Incidentally, I have a couple of questions, too - does anyone know the proportions of Pokemon found using Rock Smash (undoubtedly the proportions vary by location, much like the encounter rates of wild Pokemon in grass), and the overall chance of coming across a Pokemon when Rock Smash is used?

Im going to take a stab at it and say one in every 20 rocks you smash will have a pokemon (so 5% chance, although I think its less) Ive smashed many rocks, (especially in the safari zone, in hopes of finding a shuckle,[ I suppose altering cave is the way to go ]) and only one time I found a pokemon by this method, a wild geodude in the rocks north of Mauville.
This may be inaccurate, but I know for sure that in my game its very low everywhere
