UPDATE: I have a Shiny Ditto, and I want a shiny Ninetales, Houndoom, and Typhlosion. I finally have the ditto's estimated DV's:

0, 1
27, 28
20, 21, 22
20, 21, 22
20, 21, 22
20, 21, 22

the 0,1 is for HP, and the 27, 28 is for Attack. All others are for Defense, Speed, Sp. Atk, and Sp. Def.

Yes, but not a 100% chance. As I recall, if you use a Shiny Ditto, you have a 1:64 chance of getting a shiny baby. Good luck, and have fun ^^.

I've heard its not true :9

I have a shiny Crobat and I've bred it a million times, and each time, I get a regular Zubat.

Greetings,

Breeding is usually a tricky job. Different rules apply to pokemon of different regions. Egg moves, learned moves, TMs, HMs, Stats, Natures, Evolution, Gender...etc. - they all change when breeding.

Here's what I know about shinies.
1 ) Shinies are not (naturally) stronger than non-shinies. Of course, that's if their levels are the same; . . . they could've been fed vitamins or trained differently.

2) The chances (odds) of encountering a shiny in the wild OR through breeding are pretty much the same. Breeding shinies DOES NOT increase your chance of getting one (in an egg.)

OOOpppps. . . . . gotta go now . . . . will write more later . . .

Sorry....

Basically, you just have to keep on hatching eggs until you get one. It takes forever just to warn you.

While the second statement is true in r/s/e, such is not the case in g/s/c. In g/s/c, any pokemon that had 10 in all DVs was shiny, and in the breeding process, based on the gender, some of the DVs of a parent are taken (I believe Defense and one other are the always taken, don't hold me to this, it's been a while since I've read up on it) and the others are randomized. However, the baby's stats take after the parent with the opposite gender. So if you had a male pokemon with a 15 defense DV, only females would have a 15 Defense DV, and vice versa.

Now, let's say you want to try and breed shinies via Gyarados. Your Gyarados is Male, and you want a shiny Charmander. Seeing as your baby Charmander would have to be female in order to even have a chance to be shiny, your chances are very low, seeing as you have to wait for the approximately 12% chance of getting a female, as well as the chance of getting 10 in all DVs.

On the other hand, let's say your parent is again a shiny male, this time, a Clefable. If you were to breed this Clefable with a Chansey, since you have a 100% chance of getting a female pokemon, (since Chansey is always female) the only randomness lies in the 3 or so DVs that need to be at 10.

Ditto, however, is a special case. When breeding with a Ditto, (I'd assume this is because Ditto is genderless) the baby always takes after it's stats, hence regardless of gender, the baby only has the randomized DVs as a factor in whether or not it is shiny. Hence, Ditto is the best for any kind of stat breeding, whether for maxstats or shininess.

To breed a shiny pokemon do one of the parents have to be shiny then? (I kind of hunt shinies, but I haven't had much time lately so I don't have many.)

No, the parents do not have to be shiny. On my gold version, I bred a normal Eevee with a normal Ditto, and I received a shiny Eevee (on the fourth try, I might add :P).

no, the parent simply has to have 10 in Defense and I believe Special (I forget, was Special still one DV, but two different stats, or were they separate at this time? It's been a while..._

At any rate, either Defense and Special or Defense and Special Defense (depending on whether or not Special Attack and Defense were still based on one stat or not, despite the actual numbers being split) need to be 10 to have a chance at getting a shiny.

question: if i breed a ditto with a houndour, which would be best to try with: male or female houndour? (i think i got part of what you were saying: higher shiny egg rate for females)

No matter how much you try, the chances are the same ;/

I looked into this, and you probably have more of a chance running into another shiny then you do breeding for one ;p

no no your chances are altered based on the chances of gender, so if you had a shiny female, the baby would have to be male to have a chance at getting a shiny. In the case of ditto, your chances are instantly maximized, as stats are always taken from Ditto, regardless of the other parent's gender.

so...What should my ditto's stats be at? I think i need to train it a lil more for EV's or something maybe...i keep breeding it with my female Ninetales (mana) and nothing happens...just a regular vulpix almost every time (about twenty or so eggs so far-released most of the vulpixes or gave them away)

the thing is, the stats aren't the factor, the DVs are. DVs are unchangeable (legitimately, anyhow) so unless you know for a fact that your Ditto has 10 in Defense and Special Defense, there's no real way to tell. Your Ditto probably doesn't have 10 in one, the other, or both.

On a related note, those of you hellbent on a shiny Ditto, there IS a way to get one.

1) send a shiny r/b/y pokemon to a past (r/b/y) version (Red Gyarados is great for this, though I think any shiny works)

2) Teach that pokemon Mimic, and delete all but it and an attacking move, if necessary.

3) Get into an encounter with a wild Ditto (make sure that your pokemon is faster than Ditto, or this won't work.

4) Use Mimic. in r/b/y, you could use mimic first, and pick what move to learn. pick (duh) Transform.

5) Ditto will use transform and transform into your pokemon, and since you mimiced Transform, and transform copies the current move, the Ditto will know Transform and whatever else is in your moveset.

6) Begin to weaken Ditto via whatever methods, until it uses Transform a second time. Now you are free to catch it.

7) Trade Ditto (and your other shiny, if you feel so inclined) back to g/s/c. It will now be a shiny ditto. Hurray for you!
