My two favorites would be :

{gyarados} Gyarados. Awesome physical attacker, and decent defensive stats.

{starmie} Starmie. A great special sweeper. Boltbeam rocks.

Location: Definately not dimension 12. No, you don't know about that one yet.
{slowking} is great if you have friends. If not, {lanturn} is pretty good, too.

some noteable pokes:

Lapras (very bulky & tons of potential)

Politoad (suprisingly bulky and strong)

Empoleon (a million resistances....)

Poliwrath (great physical choice but not as hot as...)

FERALIGATR (best physical water guy plus it can get dd)

Mantine (ridicously high sp. d- if you keep it away from electrics its an amazing wall)

Gorybyss (great sp. a & speed- 2nd highest water sp. a) 2nd highest water type Special Attacker

Omnastar (Keep away from grass and he is strong and physically bulky) highest water type Special Attacker

Quagsire (stockpile + recover: expect to this poke rise to popularity as those are two new epic moves)

slowKing/SlowBro (calm mind+slack off= very dangerous)

Lanturn (volt absorb, stockpile, and aqua Ring + 1038593829857hp make it a decent wall also hhas great type coverage)

i didnt mention: gyardos, milotic, vaporeon or swampert because everyone knows about those. These will give you some options :D

I'm using an event Palkia
It started at level 1and I got it before the 1st gym and its mine so it obeys me, I soft reset till I got a timid one (which is hard considering there is a 3 minute cut scene before you can check the nature), the I traded it To platinum to EV train then sent it back to SS at level 8 with full EVs and It will be my surfer.

I think Poliwrath can be a very powerful water type. Not sure about politoad. Kingdra is good too.

{kingdra} is...just...too powerful making it a great Water Type though I personally would use another Water Type for at least a tini bit of challenge...
