Well... its really user preference I find. Sometimes its easier to start with the elemental pokemon. Fire, water, grass and air. Sometimes it helps to incorporate an electric or a rock type as well because when it comes to fighting enemy pokemon you kinda need to be prepared to switch to its opposite. Grass is bad against fire and air but good against water. Water is bad against grass and electric but good against fire, ground and rock. Fire is good with grass, bug and steel but bad against water, ground and rock. Flying pokemon it depends if they know levitate. Some rock moves work on them, others don't. And its vice versa. Fighting moves work very well against normal pokemon.
As for psychic, ghost and dark types. Those aren't my strong point. However, dragon pokemon I find are pretty tough. Ice and other dragon types are highly effective against dragons, but the other types it takes a while to knock down the hp.
Dragon vs. Dragon, bad. Dragon vs. grass, fire, electric, etc. It varies. Not as effective, but it depends on the move and how strong your pokemon is.

I think the best Pokemon in that would be Excadrill or Conkledurr. But as stated earlier, user preference is what really matters this early in the game, at least untill the final gym.

Well, as long as you don't have a team that could be taken down by 1 or 2 types, it's just a matter of finding Pokemon you like and training them. That would be advice for beginners. There's more involved when you get more experienced, but just focus on that for now.

When you get to the desert area, definitely catch a Scraggy such a huge help against the Elite Four, takes all but the fighting type elite down almost single handedly.

That's true, but you have to train it to a rather high Level (around 60) to avoid stuffing it with Full Restores and Revives.

After going to Castelia City, make sure that while you're in the desert, to grab your fossil from the Backpacker at the ruins. Revive it in that city that's temporarily slipped my mind, and make it one of your main Pokemon. Trust me. It will help you.

Yeah, tt's right, it does help. Especially if you're trying to find a good Pokemon that can learn Fly/Surf. Archeops can learn Fly, and both Tortouga and Carracosta can learn Surf. Also, tt, it's Nacrene City.

I agree with that, I highly recommend getting the fossil pokemon, I prefer Archeops. Mine can take down all of the elite four and most of Alder. A few to think of are Darmanitan, Krookodile, Haxorus, Scraggy, Galvantula but only with compoundeyes cause it'll have high accuracy Thunder. Hope this helps
